Wash and Be Healed by Susan E. Cayleff Pdf

In a century characterized by dramatic health-care remedies—bloodletting, purging, and leeching, for example—hydropathy was one of the most celebrated alternative forms of medical care. Unlike these other cures, however, hydropathy, which entailed various applications of cold water, also staunchly advocated the reformation of such personal habits as diet, exercise, dress, and way of life. Susan E. Cayleff explores the relationship between this fascinating sect of nineteenth-century medicine and the women who took the cure. Wash and Be Healed investigates the theories, practices, medical and social philosophies, institutions, and the most prominent proponents of the water-cure movement and studies them in relation to the diverse reform networks of the nineteenth century. Documenting the popularity and importance of hydropathy among female activists, Cayleff argues that the water-cure movement was overpowered by allopathic (or orthodox) medicine which viewed hydropathy as a crackpot therapeutic largely because of its close association with nineteenth-century social activism. The book gives us an alternative view of social and sexual relationships which should contribute to the growing awareness among scholars that the history of health and healing must be more than the history of allopathic medicine.

Carry A. Nation by Fran Grace Pdf

Carry A. NationRetelling the Life Fran Grace The story of one of America's most notorious and misunderstood women. Carry Nation was 54 when she "smashed" her first saloon, but her life before she started her infamous hatchet crusade has been little known until now. In this first scholarly biography of Nation, Fran Grace unfolds a story that often contrasts with the image of Nation as "Crazy Carry," a bellicose, blue-nosed, man-hating killjoy. Using newly available archival materials and placing Nation in her various historical and cultural contexts, Grace "retells" the crusader's tumultuous life. Brought up in antebellum Kentucky, Nation lived through the devastation of the Civil War and endured a failed marriage to an alcoholic physician. In her early 20s, a single mother and a destitute widow, she experienced a spiritual crisis. Her second marriage, to a much-older David Nation, grew strained under the failure of their Texas farm, her exploration into Holiness religion, and her attempts to work outside the home. When the couple moved to Kansas, Nation's disappointments translated into an agenda for social reform. Frustrated by the rampant violations of the state's prohibition law and empowered by a sense of divine mission, Nation responded with rocks, crowbars, and hatchets. Though much of her last two decades was spent on stage or in jail and in battles with other family members over the future of her unstable adult daughter, she edited two newspapers and founded several homes for abused and needy women. This complexly woven and delightfully written biography adds depth to the popular image of Carry Nation, situating her at the center of major cultural currents in her time. I Promise You're Healed by Nathan Moe Pdf

The title I Promise You're Healed was given to me before I wrote any thoughts down to explain it. It was given to me as a promise directly from God to me and has helped me to see from His perspective the reality that is available to all who live in His Kingdom. The grace of God reserves many blessings for all who will receive them by faith. Everything that comes to us by the grace of God must be received by faith, not a manufactured faith, but Jesus's own faith living in us. In this book, I share the timeless lessons that have shaped my life permanently and allowed me to live fearlessly in a world where sin and fear abound. But the grace of God always abounds much, much more!

Reforming Women's Fashion, 1850-1920 by Patricia A. Cunningham Pdf

This work focuses on the efforts toward reforming women's dress that took place in Europe and America in the latter half of the 18th century and the first decade of the 20th century, and the types of garments adopted by women to overcome the challenges posed by fashionable dress. It considers the many advocates for reform and examines their motives, their arguments for change, and how they promoted improvements in women's fashion. Though there was no single overarching dress reform movement, it reveals similarities among the arguments posed by diverse groups of reformers, including especially the equation of reform with an ideal image of improved health. Drawing on a variety of primary and secondary sources in the USA and Europe - including the popular press, advice books for women, allopathic and alternative medical literature, and books on aesthetics, art, health, and physical education - the text makes a significant contribution to costume studies, social history, and women's studies.

Sweet Revelation by Davida Blanton Pdf

How is the God of heaven showing Himself to the world? How has He shown Himself to you? Sweet Revelation is one woman’s revelation story, a narrative memoir written to people in all walks of life. Author Davida Blanton describes times throughout her life when God showed Himself real to her. In her darkest moments of fear, disappointment, and grief, God’s arm brought comfort to Davida and healed her brokenness, wrapping her in truth, embracing her in love, protecting her in light. The word “revelation” means an unveiling. When something is unveiled before our eyes, it is made visible. When eternal things are unveiled before us, allowing us to “see” in the spiritual realm, our lives are affected in profound ways. We are changed. This happens differently for each person, because every man and woman has unique needs and experiences. This book tells how it’s happened for one woman and invites you to consider how it’s happened in your own life. Jesus said, “The person who has my commands and keeps them really loves me; and whoever really loves me...I will love him and will show Myself to him. I will let Myself be clearly seen by him and make Myself real to him.” (John 14:21 AMP) Revelation of the sweetest kind. “I anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” -Words of Christ recorded in Revelation 3:18 (NKJV)
