Waste Treatment in the Metal Manufacturing, Forming, Coating, and Finishing Industries by Lawrence K. Wang,Nazih K. Shammas,Yung-Tse Hung Pdf

Comprehensive in its scope and directly applicable to daily waste management problems of specific industries, Waste Treatment in the Metal Manufacturing, Forming, Coating, and Finishing Industries covers hazardous industrial waste treatment, renovation, and reuse in the metal manufacturing, forming, coating, enameling, and finishing industries. It details specific hazardous and industrial wastes from metal industries, basic and advanced principals and applications, augmented by figures, tables, examples, and case histories. This book elucidates new industries and new waste management topics and provides all of the necessary technical information on industrial and hazardous waste treatment. Focusing on new developments in innovative and alternative technologies, it offers in-depth coverage of environmental pollution sources, waste characteristics, facility innovations, design criteria, control technologies, management strategies, process alternatives, costs, and effluent standards. It also addresses the regional and global effects of important pollution control practices specific to the process industries. Since the field of industrial hazardous waste treatment is very broad and no one can claim to be an expert in all industries, the editors have collected contributions from a wide range of experts, making the information in this handbook authoritative, inclusive, and cutting-edge. It seamlessly interweaves the traditional with the novel, covering all sectors of pollution control and delineating the need for a total environmental control program and how to achieve it.

Hazardous Waste Reducation in the Metal Finishing Industry by PRC Environmental Management, Inc Pdf

"From the Foreword: " This book presents the results of a waste audit study for the metal finishing industry. The study, carried out for the State of California but applicable for metal finishers elsewhere, identifies opportunities for waste reduction available to the metal finishing industry and develops procedures that can be used by metal finishers to assess their own waste reduction opportunities. The study emphasizes technologies available to small- and medium-sized metal finishing plants. Typically, these shops operate a variety of physical, chemical, and electrochemical processes. Chemical processes include degreasing, cleaning, pickling, etching, coating, and electroless plating. Electrochemical processes include plating and anodizing. The tasks included in the study were: (1) selecting metal finishing plants to include in the study, (2) performing a waste audit at each selected plant, (3) developing recommendations for implementing waste reduction technologies at each audited plant, (4) discussing with facility representatives the feasibility of implementing the waste reduction recommendations, and (5) developing this waste audit study report and methodology. The study identifies three categories of waste reduction technologies that are available to metal finishers: (1) source reduction, (2) recycling and resource recovery, and (3) alternative treatment. The costs associated with implementing these technologies range from a few hundred dollars for making simple improvements in housekeepiing and minor process modifications to tens of thousands of dollars for installing recovery or treatment units. The benefits realized from implementing such improvements include reductions inmaterial purchase and waste disposal costs, as well as reduction in the liability

Decontamination of Heavy Metals by Jiaping Paul Chen Pdf

Heavy metals, such as lead, chromium, cadmium, zinc, copper, and nickel, are important constituents of most living organisms, as well as many nonliving substances. Some heavy metals are essential for growth of biological and microbiological lives, yet their presence in excessive quantities is harmful to humans and interferes with many environmental processes. Heavy metals are also nonbiodegradable, making them more difficult to remediate. Decontamination of Heavy Metals: Processes, Mechanisms, and Applications tackles the subject of heavy metals in the environment, with special emphasis on their treatment, removal, recovery, disposal, management, and modeling. Concepts, Cutting-Edge Technologies, and Applications The book provides in-depth coverage of the major hazardous heavy metals that are found in water, land, and facilities and that have significant effects on public health and the environment. After an overview of heavy metal contamination, the text reviews the concepts and technologies of pollution prevention. It then examines technologies for metal decontamination, ranging from precipitation—which is the most commonly used—to cutting-edge technologies such as precipitation-crystallization, ion exchange, membrane filtration, and electrolysis. Mathematical models for metal removal and recovery are also included. Develop a Feasible Total Heavy Metal Control Program Complementing other books in the Advances in Industrial and Hazardous Wastes Treatment series, this volume presents important research related to the remediation of heavy metals. Extensive references are included for readers who want to trace, duplicate, or improve on a specific industrial hazardous waste treatment practice. A comprehensive handbook for environmental professionals, researchers, and students, it provides technical information to help readers develop a feasible total metal control program that can benefit both industry and local municipalities.

Heavy Metals in the Environment by Lawrence K. Wang,Jiaping Paul Chen,Yung-Tse Hung,Nazih K. Shammas Pdf

A successful modern heavy metal control program for any industry will include not only traditional water pollution control, but also air pollution control, soil conservation, site remediation, groundwater protection, public health management, solid waste disposal, and combined industrial-municipal heavy metal waste management. In fact, it should be a total environmental control program. Comprehensive in scope, Heavy Metals in the Environment provides technical and economical information on the development of a feasible total heavy metal control program that can benefit industry and local municipalities. The book discusses the importance and contamination of metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium, zinc, copper, nickel, iron, and mercury. It covers important research of metals in the environment, the processes and mechanisms for metals control and removal, the environmental behavior and effects of engineered metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, environmental geochemistry of high arsenic aquifer systems, nano-technology applications in metal ion adsorption, biosorption of metals, and heavy metal removal by expopolysaccharide-producing cyanobacteria. The authors delineate technologies for metals treatment and management, metal bearing effluents, metal-contaminated solid wastes, metal finishing industry wastes and brownfield sites, and arsenic-contaminated groundwater streams. They also discuss control, treatment, and management of metal emissions from motor vehicles. The authors reflect the breadth of the field and draw on personal experiences to provide an in-depth presentation of environmental pollution sources, waste characteristics, control technologies, management strategies, facility innovations, process alternatives, costs, case histories, effluent standards, and future trends for each industrial or commercial operation. The methodologies and technologies discussed are directly applicable to the waste management problems that must be met in all industries.

Waste Production and Utilization in the Metal Extraction Industry by Sehliselo Ndlovu,Geoffrey S. Simate,Elias Matinde Pdf

Increasingly stringent environmental regulations and industry adoption of waste minimization guidelines have thus, stimulated the need for the development of recycling and reuse options for metal related waste. This book, therefore, gives an overview of the waste generation, recycle and reuse along the mining, beneficiation, extraction, manufacturing and post-consumer value chain. This book reviews current status and future trends in the recycling and reuse of mineral and metal waste and also details the policy and legislation regarding the waste management, health and environmental impacts in the mining, beneficiation, metal extraction and manufacturing processes. This book is a useful reference for engineers and researchers in industry, policymakers and legislators in governance, and academics on the current status and future trends in the recycling and reuse of mineral and metal waste. Some of the key features of the book are as follows: Holistic approach to waste generation, recycling and reuse along the minerals and metals extraction. Detailed overview of metallurgical waste generation. Practical examples with complete flow sheets, techniques and interventions on waste management. Integrates the technical issues related to efficient resources utilization with the policy and regulatory framework. Novel approach to addressing future commodity shortages.
