Water 2025 by Barry Leonard Pdf

Water is the lifeblood of the Amer. West and the foundation of its economy. It is the fastest growing region of the country and water is its scarcest resource. Water 2025 focuses on: explosive population growth in western urban areas, the emerging need for water for environmental and recreational uses, and the national importance of the domestic production of food and fiber from western farms and ranches. They are driving conflicts between these competing uses of water. State and local governments should have a leading role in meeting these challenges, and the Dept. of the Interior should focus its attention and existing resources on areas where scarce federal dollars can provide the greatest benefits to the West and the rest of the Nation. World Water Demand and Supply, 1990 to 2025 by Anonim Pdf

Presents two alternative scenarios of water demand and supply for 118 countries over the 1990 to 2025 period and develops indicators of water scarcity for each country and for the world as a whole. This study is the first step in IWMI’s long-term research goal: to determine the extent and depth of water scarcity, its consequences for individual countries and what can be done about it.

India's water future to 2025-2050: business-as-usual scenario and deviations by Amarasinghe, Upali, Shah, Tushaar, Turral, Hugh, Anand, B. K. Pdf

With a rapidly expanding economy many changes are taking place in India today. The business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, which assumes the continuation of current trends of key water demand drivers, will meet the future food demand. However, it leads to a severe regional water crisis by 2050, where many river basins will reach closure, will be physically water-scarce and will have regions with severely overexploited groundwater resources. While the alternative scenarios of water demand show both optimistic and pessimistic water futures, the scenario with additional productivity growth is the most optimistic, with significant scope for reducing future water demand.

Business in the World of Water by Betty Sue Flowers,United Nations Environment Programme,World Business Council for Sustainable Development Pdf

[The report] offers three stories about the role of business in relation to the growing issue of water in the world. These stories do not try to cover everything but attempt to bring to life a limited number of alternative future environments that will challenge our economic viability, social legitimacy, and global fitness in the marketplace. H = Hydro is the story of efficiency (more value per drop and more drops for less). In Hydro, there is a strategic advantage to being the first to market with the flexible, right-choice solutions rather than being locked out. 2 = Rivers is the story of security - enough water of sufficient quality for both the haves and the have-nots. In Rivers business cannot choose to operate only in the economic realm, which is just one side of the management challenge, if it wants water security. O = Ocean is the story of interconnectivity - accounting for the sustainability of the whole system. In the world of Ocean, business realizes that it cannot help particular communities survive and prosper at the expense of causing water stress elsewhere.

Water Conservation, Recycling and Reuse: Issues and Challenges by Rajeev Pratap Singh,Alan S. Kolok,Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt Pdf

Water - a basic element of life, livelihood, food security and sustainable development - holds the key to global sustainability. The global water demand has been increased 3-fold in the past five decades and only 0.4% of the total world’s fresh water resources is available and accessible for use. The United Nations projected that half of all countries will face water scarcity by 2025 and more than one-third of the world’s population could be affected by water stress by 2050. The water problem is rapidly intensifying in the Asian region, and around 700 million people do not have access to safe drinking water. Similarly, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, by 2050, more than one billion people in Asia alone are projected to experience negative impacts on water resources as a result of climate change. Climate change is also putting extra pressure on and adversely affecting the global water cycle, leading to irregular precipitation, more floods and droughts and creating an imbalance between water supply and demand. The availability of safe water is a major global concern due to the rapidly increasing population, urbanization, unsustainable consumption patterns, and rapid shifts in land use. It is believed that reduced access to freshwater will have cascading consequences that will pose threat to global food security, livelihood security, and cause large scale migration and economic and geopolitical tensions. As such, strategies for water conservation, wastewater reuse and recycling should be adopted in order to lessen the gap between supply and demand for water for different activities. This book provides readers with a better understanding of the water security challenges, and presents innovations to address these challenges, strengthen the science-policy interface, and develop institutional and human capacities for water security and sustainability.

Water Resources by Wolfram Mauser Pdf

Water is a vital part of every ecosystem on the planet. It is a prerequisite for the basic function and productive efficiency of life on Earth. Today, approximately a third of the earth's population suffers because of water scarcity, and by the year 2025, this percentage is likely rise to two-thirds. Water Resources: Efficient, Sustainable and Equitable Use shows what conflicts this will entail, and provides a basis for possible solutions.

Vegetation, Water, Humans and the Climate by P. Kabat Pdf

This book presents a state-of-the-art scientific overview of the influence of terrestrial vegetation and soils within the Earth system. It deals especially with interactions between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere via the hydrological cycle and their interlinkage with anthropogenic activities. Measurements gathered in integrated field experiments in the Sahel, the Amazon, North America and South-east Asia confirm the importance of these interactions, but a substantial data consolidation effort still needs to be undertaken. Observations are complemented by modelling studies, including regional models that simulate flows and transport in river catchments, coupled land-cover and regional climate systems, and Earth-system and global circulation models. Water, nutrient and sediment fluxes in river basins are also discussed and are shown to be highly impacted and regulated by humans through land use, pollution and river engineering. Finally, the book discusses environmental vulnerability and methodologies for assessing the risks associated with regional and global climatic and environmental variability and change. The editors emphasise that the results reported in this book are based on the research work of many individual scientists and teams around the world associated with the objectives of the IGBP-BAHC and WCRP-GEWEX international research programmes.

Water Security by Water Initiative The World Economic Forum Pdf

At the 2008 Davos Annual Meeting, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon identified water as “the climate adaptation issue,” directing the World Economic Forum to assemble the world’s foremost group of public, private, non-governmental-organization and academic experts to examine the impending global water crisis from all perspectives. The result of their work is this forecast—a stark, non-technical overview of where we will be by 2025 if we continue to (mis)manage our water resources. Water Security contains compelling commentary from leading decision-makers, past and present. The commentary is supported by analysis from leading academics of how the world economy will be affected if world leaders cannot agree on solutions. The findings are shocking. Perhaps equally stunning are the potential solutions and the recommendations that the group presents. All are included in this landmark publication.
