Water Pollution: Modelling, Measuring and Prediction by C.A. Wrobel,C.A. Brebbia Pdf

Water Pollution is a subject of growing concern in our industrial world. The environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads dis charged into natural water systems have led the scientific community to pursue studies capable of relating the pollutant discharge with changes in the water quality. The results of these studies are permitting industries to employ more efficient methods of controlling and treating the waste loads, and water authorities to enforce more strict legislation regarding this matter. The present book contains edited versions of the papers presented at the First International Conference on Water Pollution (Modelling, Measuring and Prediction), held in Southampton, England, in September 1991. Its contents, which reflect the interdisciplinarity of the subject, are divided into four parts, each consisting of a keynote address and several invited and contributed papers: 1. Mathematical models (Keynote speaker: Prof. R.A. Falconer, Univer sity of Bradford, USA) 2. Data acquisition/monitoring/measurement (Keynote speaker: Dr. A. Plata Bedmar, IAEA, Austria) 3. Waste disposal and wastewater treatment (Keynote speaker: Prof. D.R.F. Harleman, MIT, USA) 4. Chemical and biological problems (Keynote speaker: Dr. E.I. Hamil ton, Environmental consultant, UK) Although the papers have been typographically edited they have been re produced directly from material submitted by the authors, and their content is a reflection of the authors' research and opinion.

Water Quality in the Third Pole by Chhatra Mani Sharma,Shichang Kang,Lekhendra Tripathee Pdf

Water Quality in the Third Pole: The Roles of Climate Change and Human Activities offers in-depth coverage of water quality issues (natural and human-related), the monitoring of contaminants, and the remediation of water contamination. The book's chapters assess years of research on water quality and climate change in this fascinating and scientifically important region. Topics addressed include climate change impacts on water qualities of freshwater bodies, such as glaciers, lakes, rivers and precipitation. In addition, the book explains the growing concerns over water quality, such as mercury, trace elements, major ions, persistent organic pollutants and their circulation. As such, it is an essential reference for academics and policymakers interested in the water quality of natural bodies. Identifies key issues and problems, focusing on water quality in the Third Pole region under the changing scenarios of global climate change Provides updated information on water quality in a compiled form, mainly from climatically and lithologically distinct Himalayan regions Highlights the local and long-range transported inputs of pollutants in water bodies

Water Pollution XIV by S. Hernández,S. Mambretti Pdf

Water pollution problems are of continued importance around the world, with an impact on both populated areas and the environment. This volume consists of papers presented at the 14th International Conference in the series of Monitoring, Modelling and Management of Water Pollution. The environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads discharged into natural water bodies requires the formation of a framework for regulation and control. This framework needs to be based on scientific results that relate pollutant discharge with changes in water quality. The results of these studies allow industry to apply more efficient methods of controlling and treating waste loads, and water authorities to enforce appropriate regulations regarding this matter. Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues including the physical processes of mixing and dilution, chemical and biological processes, mathematical modelling, data acquisition and measurement, to name but a few. In view of the scarcity of available data, it is important that experiences are shared on an international basis. Thus, a continuous exchange of information between scientists from different countries is essential. Topics covered include: Water contamination; Monitoring, modelling and forecasting; Water management; Wastewater management; Groundwater and aquifers; Flood damage; Freshwater quality; Coastal and offshore pollution; Health risk studies; Agricultural contamination; Industrial pollution; Water reuse; Emerging technologies; Socio-economic-political consequences; Population and climate change; Education and training.

Aquatic Pollution by Edward A. Laws Pdf

A clear, straightforward presentation of concepts and issues in aquatic pollution This comprehensive introductory text presents a systematic study of pollution in oceans, lakes, streams, and underground aquifers. In a clear, straightforward style that is easily accessible to nonscientists, it describes the sources, features, and effects of thirteen different types of aquatic pollution. Fully updated to reflect current understanding and recent developments, this Third Edition of Aquatic Pollution covers every aspect of pollution associated with urban runoff, acid rain, sewage disposal, pesticides, oil spills, nutrient loading, and more. Case studies of major pollution sites such as Lake Erie, Three Mile Island, and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal help to illustrate points made in the general discussion. Important features of this new edition include: * Updated discussions of nonpoint source pollution, industrial pollution, thermal pollution, pathogens, metals, plastics, and more * New case studies of Chesapeake Bay and the Exxon Valdez * Beginning-of-chapter outlines * End-of-chapter study questions * New special section on units of measurement * Four chapters on the fundamentals of ecology and toxicology Aquatic Pollution, Third Edition, is a first-rate teaching and learning tool for courses in environmental science, zoology, oceanography, biology, and civil or sanitary engineering. It is also an excellent primer for policymakers and activists focused on environmental issues.

Pollutant Effects in Freshwater by J. Jacoby,E. Welch Pdf

Pollutant Effects in Freshwater provides a practical and concise introduction to the ecological consequences of water pollution in aquatic ecosystems. In tackling the problem of water quality deterioration, this book combines the limnological and water pollution literature to describe how pollutants in wastewater affect populations of organisms in freshwater environments. Substantially revised, updated and expanded, with additional specialist contributors, this retitled new edition of Ecological Effects of Wastewater will continue to focus on the effects and management of eutrophication, water quality standards to protect aquatic life, and widen the debate over micro organisms and their public health significance in the aquatic environment. With ever tighter controls on pollution levels of freshwater bodies being implemented and enforced world wide, this book is essential reading for students of public health and environmental engineering, and a reference tool for professionals in consultancies, contractors and for those in regulatory and enforcement bodies.
