Habitat, Population Dynamics, and Metal Levels in Colonial Waterbirds by Joanna Burger,Michael Gochfeld Pdf
This book is a result of the authors' more than 40 years of study on the behavior, populations, and heavy metals in the colonial waterbirds nesting in Barnegat Bay and the nearby estuaries and bays in the Northeastern United States. From Boston Harbor to the Chesapeake, based on longitudinal studies of colonial waterbirds, it provides a clear pictu
Wetland Use by Waterbirds that Winter in Coastal Texas by James Thomas Anderson,Thomas C. Tacha,George T. Muehl (author),David Lobpries Pdf
"Wetland use and selection by species of waterbirds (shorebirds, wading birds, gulls, terns, grebes, cormorants, and pelicans) between the Rio Grande and Galveston Bay in coastal Texas were studied during September and November of 1991-92 and during January and March of 1992-93. Based on a stratified (by dominant land use) random sample of 64.75-ha plots, 88 species of waterbirds using wetlands were observed. Ranks of density and proportion of feeding bird indicated that cormorants and pelicans preferred wetlands with less than 30% vegetation. Gulls, terns, and skimmers preferred certain types of estuarine and lacustrine wetlands with less than 30% vegetation, especially estuarine subtidal rock bottom rubble types. Grebes and rails selectively used palustrine aquatic-bed rooted vascular and unconsolidated bottom mud wetland types. Herons, egrets, and bitterns preferred certain types of lacustrine and estuarine wetlands. Shorebirds used estuarine intertidal wetlands. Waterbird management should focus on 26 of the 82 wetland types that we prioritized in the coastal plains of Texas. Management should focus on protecting, enhancing, or restoring complexes of various wetland types, especially estuarine aquatic-bed and intertidal unconsolidated substrate types"--Page 1

A spectacular collection of the world's most beautiful waterbirds, celebrating both those oceanic wanderers that live at sea, coming only land only to breed, as well as those shorebirds and so-called colonial nesters that live on land but are almost always found never water.
Mid-winter Numbers of Waterbirds in Bulgaria (1977-2001) by Tani︠u︡ Manev Michev,Lyubomir Profirov Pdf
Annotation. "In the present book for the first time in Bulgaria are included results from 25 years of counts in the most important wetlands in the country referring to the Mid-winter numbers of the waterbirds there." "This long-term survey is a part of the regular counts of Divers, Grebes, Pelicans, Cormorants, Swans, Geese, Ducks, Coots, Waders, and Gulls, which have taken place in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East since 1967." "The book consists of two main parts. In the first part are presented 45 of the most significant Bulgarian wetlands (lakes, swamps, reservoirs and other water bodies) along the Danube and Black Sea coasts and inside the country." "For each one of the wetlands there is a short characteristic description indicating the average and the maximum values for the wintering birds, the three most numerous species, the world threatened species and those exceeding the 1% Ramsar criteria." "In the second part of the book are presented 106 species of waterbirds with the dynamics of their numbers for the period 1977-2001 including graphics for most of the species." "The characteristic changes that have taken place in their wintering populations and the tendencies established by other authors for Europe are also indicated." "The book is a result of many years of effort by ornithologists - professional and non-professional, of major Bulgarian Scientific institutions, non-government organizations and state departments. It is illustrated with many black and white drawings by the famous Bulgarian artist Georgi Pchelarov. The book will be especially useful for those who are interested in birdwatching, wetland management and conservation."--Jacket.
Status, Ecology and Management of Colonial Waterbirds Nesting in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario, 1988-1994 by D. J. Moore,Canadian Wildlife Service. Ontario Region Pdf
The purposes of this paper are (1) to continue from Dobos et al. (1988) and provide an update on the status of colonial waterbird breeding populations at Hamilton Harbour (1988-1994), (2) to describe how human changes to the landscape, together with natural succession and interspecific competition have affected nest distributions in the Harbour, (3) to report the results of conservation efforts for Common and Caspian Terns and of control efforts for Ring-billed Gulls, and (4) to provide a framework for making effective decisions regarding the future of colonial waterbirds nesting at Hamilton Harbour.
