Welsh Traditional Music by Phyllis Kinney Pdf

Welsh traditional music has, until now, been the 'Cinderella' of world music studies. Over the years, few English-language writers have paid it any attention, largely because the majority of the songs of Wales are in the Welsh language. Now, at last, that gap has been filled by an American. Phyllis Kinney's book, Welsh Traditional Music, will both delight and inform anyone with an interest in the subject, be they a general reader, an academic, or a performer. It covers the traditional music of Wales from its beginnings through to the present day and contains an extensive selection of more than 200 musical examples. The book not only includes musical analysis of many of the examples, but also places the songs firmly in their social and historical context. Among the many different forms of Welsh traditional music discussed are seasonal music (including wassail songs, Christmas and May carols and Plygain carols), folk drama, ballad-singing, the relevance of the eisteddfod and the musical journals of the nineteenth century,. In addition, it includes a history of collecting from the eighteenth century to the establishment and on-going activities of the Welsh Folk-Song Society in the twentieth. Both the the instrumental and the vocal traditions are examined and there is a section dealing with the uniquely Welsh tradition of 'cerdd dant'. Overall, the value of the book lies not only in its ground-breaking nature and the quality of its scholarship, but in its discussion of Welsh traditional music in the context of the Welsh musical tradition generally. Phyllis Kinney is an American who has steeped herself in the culture, and become fluent in the language, of her adopted country. She is an acknowledged authority on the traditional music of Wales and has produced a book which will become a classic.

Europe [2 volumes] by Thomas M. Wilson Pdf

This two-volume encyclopedia profiles the contemporary culture and society of every country in Europe. Each country receives a chapter encompassing such topics as religion, lifestyle and leisure, standard of living, cuisine, gender roles, relationships, dress, music, visual arts, and architecture. This authoritative and comprehensive encyclopedia provides readers with richly detailed entries on the 45 nations that comprise modern Europe. Each country profile looks at elements of contemporary life related to family and work, including popular pastimes, customs, beliefs, and attitudes. Students can make cross-cultural comparisons-for instance, a student could compare social customs in Denmark with those in Norway, compare Greece's cuisine with that of Italy, and contrast the architecture of Paris with Amsterdam and Barcelona. Culture and society are changing in each region and nation of Europe due to many political and economic forces, both inside and outside of each nation's borders. This encyclopedia considers many of the transformations connected to globalization, as well as traditions that still hold strong, to provide a complete assessment of the processes that make European societies and cultures distinctive.

Popular Music by Graham Vulliamy,Edward Lee Pdf

The approach of this book, first published in 1982, is multi-disciplinary. Popular music, it is argued, is not only a musical but also a social phenomenon; the criteria needed to assess it are different from those used in the appreciation of ‘classical’ music. The first section of this guide is devoted to setting out just what those criteria should be. A second section puts forward bases for course construction that are detailed and flexible. A final section provides a list of further resources.

Dances of England & Wales by Maud Karpeles,Lois Blake Pdf

The traditional dances of Merrie England, that once earned us the name of 'the dancing English', were all but lost under the soot and grime of the Industrial Revolution. Only the devoted labours and patient research of Cecil Sharp saved them from extinction: Here and there in quiet corners of the countryside he found old men who still remembered the delightful dances of their youth, and this 'timely salvage', as Maud Karpeles calls it, resulted in the folkdance revival that is at once his handiwork and his memorial. In Wales, too, time has wrought ill with the folk traditions. The music of the crwth is heard, alas, no more, but the Welsh dances are being revived, and can now be seen in their traditional setting at the Eisteddfodau and in the country villages. Miss Karpeles, who worked with Sharp for many years and who is Honorary Secretary of the International Folk Music Council, writes with authority on English folk dancing; Mrs. Blake is President of the Welsh Folk Dnace Society. Detailed descriptions (with music) of four selected dances, and four costume plates in full colour make this book one that will gladden the heart of all who love the dance and the countryside.
