Theology and the Star Wars Universe by Benjamin D. Espinoza Pdf

Scholars have been arguing for years that Star Wars is more than light sabers, Wookies, Millennium Falcons, and troubling familial relationships. Star Wars is an exciting space fantasy that we can explore from multiple academic perspectives, such as philosophy and psychology. This volume adds to that conversation by asking, “what would it look like if we analyzed the Star Wars universe theologically?” In Theology and the Star Wars Universe, contributors from various theological traditions take on this task by exploring the nature of the Force, the spiritual role of the Jedi, nonviolent and liberationist readings of the Franchise, and the enduring power of hope. Written for the restless, curious academic but accessible to diehard fans, Theology and the Star Wars Universe is an exciting foray into the study of theology and popular culture.

Christianity According to the Wesleys by Franz Hildebrandt Pdf

“These lectures cannot claim to be more than a first, sketchy introduction to the theology of Wesley (without, in the main, discriminating between John and Charles). To those who know him they say nothing new; the others, of course, and the Methodists among them in particular, one would wish to convince at least that they ought to know him. For this purpose it seemed advisable to let Wesley speak freely for himself, even where he speaks against modern Methodism; but to keep in mind, and point out where necessary, that the last word about Christianity must be, here as always, not ‘according to the Wesleys’, but ‘according to the Scriptures’. The semi-homiletic style is chiefly due to the unregenerate nature of a preacher not really converted to academic garb, and can only partly be ascribed to the setting of the beautiful Garrett Chapel where the lectures were delivered, and to the generosity of those who had them recorded for me.” —From the Author’s Note

The Theology of Sanctification and Resignation in Charles Wesley's Hymns by Julie A. Lunn Pdf

Sanctification is a central theme in the theology of both John and Charles Wesley. However, while John’s theology of sanctification has received much scholarly attention, significantly less has been paid to Charles’ views on the subject. This book redresses this imbalance by using Charles’ many poetic texts as a window into his rich theological thought on sanctification, particularly uncovering the role of resignation in the development of his views on this key doctrine. In this analysis of Charles’ theology of sanctification, the centrality he accorded to resignation is uncovered to show a positive attribute involving acts of intention, desire and offering to God. The book begins by putting Charles’ position in the context of contemporary theology, and then shows how he differed in attitude from his brother John. It then discusses in depth how his hymns use the concept of resignation, both in relation to Jesus Christ and the believer. It concludes this analysis by identifying the ways in which Charles understood the relationship between resignation and sanctification; namely, that resignation is a lens through which Charles views holiness. The final chapter considers the implications of these conclusions for a twenty-first century theological and spiritual context, and asks whether resignation is still a concept which can be used today. This book breaks new ground in the understanding of Charles Wesley’s personal theology. As such, it will be of significant interest to scholars of Methodism and the Wesleys as well as those working in theology, spirituality, and the history of religion.

Change of Heart by James A. Hopwood Pdf

As the United Methodist Church splinters, Methodists of all stripes need to be reminded of their rich theological and cultural heritage. In accessible, non-academic style, this book introduces readers to John and Charles Wesley and the Methodist movement they founded. It weaves historical and theological narrative with the personal testimony of a second-career pastor who “married into” the United Methodist Church, was led by God to seek ordination as pastor in it, and remains loyal to it after thirty years of ministry. The text is richly annotated with references to John Wesley’s works in the hope that readers will be drawn deeper into Wesleyan spirituality. Each chapter includes “Six Good Questions to consider or discuss” and a suggestion to read one of "Six Great Sermons" by Wesley.

Speak Up for Just War or Pacifism by Paul Ramsey Pdf

"Paul Ramsey's provocative criticism sets the United Methodist bishops' peace pastoral in the context of a much broader discussion of the church's role in society. He reminds us, as he has done before, that good intentions also require clear thinking about where one stands in a tradition. Stanley Hauerwas' epilogue, written from a quite different pacifist perspective, accents the scope of Ramsey's issues. Speak Up for Just War or Pacifism should be of interest to everyone who cares about how churches think about public issues." --Robin W. Lovin, The University of Chicago "Paul Ramsey offers a can-exploding critique of the particulars of the Methodist document and, in so doing, elaborates many of the broad insights into just war theory that have characterized his work over the years. His contrast of 'In Defense of Creation' with the Catholic Bishops' pastoral 'The Challenge of Peace' is especially helpful. The book is excellent both as a guide to current debates and as a general introduction to Christian ethical reflection on war and peace. It ought to be welcomed by pacifists and exponents of just war alike." --Timothy P. Jackson, Yale University

The Future of John Wesley's Theology by Tex Sample Pdf

This book approaches the future of John Wesley's theology in terms of a preferred future by looking back to the Apostle Paul. In a comparison of Wesley's theology with the writings of St. Paul, Tex Sample maintains that Wesleyans tend to read Paul through Wesley, but that in the future we need to read Wesley through Paul. Key issues between Wesley and Paul are considered in this book: justification by faith, sanctification, the faith in/of Christ, the powers, the individual/social concept in Wesley that is absent in Paul, and, finally, the issue of a justice of the common good. The conclusion develops the implications of this study for the future of the church and its witness.

Methodist Theology Today by Clive Marsh Pdf

British Methodism is reshaping itself. At a time of uncertainty about the future, owing to declining numbers and an ever-closer relationship with the Church of England, a collection of the liveliest theological minds in contemporary Methodism have written a book which shows how recent theology can be a resource for the future. Methodism has always had an active concern with both evangelism and social welfare and by means of its central organization it is able to coordinate efforts in these areas. The book asks challenging questions about how this may develop in the complex post-modern secular world.

Wesley, Whitefield and the 'Free Grace' Controversy by Joel Houston Pdf

When approaching the most public disagreement over predestination in the eighteenth century, the ‘Free Grace’ controversy between John Wesley and George Whitefield, the tendency can be to simply review the event as a row over the same old issues. This assumption pervades much of the scholarly literature that deals with early Methodism. Moreover, much of that same literature addresses the dispute from John Wesley’s vantage point, often harbouring a bias towards his Evangelical Arminianism. Yet the question must be asked: was there more to the ‘Free Grace’ controversy than a simple rehashing of old arguments? This book answers this complex question by setting out the definitive account of the ‘Free Grace’ controversy in first decade of the Evangelical Revival (1739-49). Centred around the key players in the fracas, John Wesley and George Whitefield, it is a close analysis of the way in which the doctrine of predestination was instrumental in differentiating the early Methodist societies from one another. It recounts the controversy through the lens of doctrinal analysis and from two distinct perspectives: the propositional content of a given doctrine and how that doctrine exerts formative pressure upon the assenting individual(s). What emerges from this study is a clearer picture of the formative years of early Methodism and the vital role that doctrinal pronouncement played in giving a shape to early Methodist identity. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of Methodism, Evangelicalism, Theology and Church History.

Through Faith to Understanding by Leon O. Hynson Pdf

This book offers a contemporary interpretation of John Wesley's theology. Here are a few of the themes: the relation of prayer and the task of theology, war and peace, the controversy over the homosexual lifestye, abortion, the right of private judgment and religious toleration, the commands of love, the implications of deconstructionism and postmodernism, Wesley as a serious theologian, divine sovereignty and human freedom, the preconditions for living well and dying well. These issues, among others, are discussed with ease and grace as the reader is invited to consider the significance of Wesley's thinking for today. This book reflects the veteran insights of a Wesley Scholar whose mind and heart have been shaped by the best of the Wesleyan tradition. Contemporary theology, biblical studies, and social/moral/political issues are interpreted from the perspective of the theology of John Wesley and his relevance for today. The author has served the Church as pastor, college and seminary professor, and seminary president. He combines a pastoral and academic approach that integrates the practical and theoretical disciplines in fresh and relevant ways. His conversational, and even poetic style, informed by seasoned familiarity with his sources, will engage both the theological student and the general reader, and will challenge both to a life-changing encounter with John Wesley's witness to vital Christianity. -- J. Steven O'Malley Asbury Theological Seminary Leon Hynson brings together the theology of John Wesley and the best of today's Christian thinking in these essays. As well, the author offers a clear explanation of Wesley's thought in the context of his 18th century sources. Hynsonshows how Wesley both synthesized and critiqued such thinkers as the Early Church Fathers, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, Richard Hooker, Jeremy Taylor, John Locke, Puritanism, Pietism, and Anglicanism. In a remarkably instructive fashion and with compelling prose, the author brings Wesley's thought into conversation with contemporary theologians and ethicists, including Karl Barth, H. Richard Niebuhr, Albert Outler, Robert Jenson, Martin Hengel, Theodore Runyon, Gerald R. Cragg, and Alasdair MacIntyre. This noteworthy volume brims with the mature wisdom of an experienced pastor and theological scholar. -- Kenneth Cain Kinghorn Asbury Theological Seminary

The Story of Christian Theology by Roger E. Olson Pdf

Christianity Today Book of the Year Award ECPA Gold Medallion Award History is made up of stories--narratives that recount the events, movements, ideas and lives that have shaped religions and nations. Theologian Roger Olson believes that the history of Christian theology should be told as such a story, one replete with thick plots, exciting twists, interesting people and fascinating ideas. In this panoramic work of historical theology Olson vividly recounts the deeds and words of the cultists and apostolic fathers of the second century, the clash between the theological schools of Alexandria and Antioch, the epochal division between East and West, the revolutionary advent of the Reformation and much more, right on up to the dazzling, sometimes dismaying fallout that has continued to shake Christians through the twentieth century. Through it all Olson detects and traces a common thread: a concern for salvation--God's redemptive activity in forgiving and transforming sinful human beings. Evenhanded, refreshingly readable, impressive in its breadth and depth, The Story of Christian Theology is poised to become a standard historical theology text.

This volume brings together the theological interpretation of the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion as expressed in the writings and hymns of John and Charles Wesley. •Section 1 addresses the Anglican-Methodist sacrament of baptism as interpreted by John Wesley with excerpts from his Treatise on Baptism. •Section 2 contains commentaries on six of Charles Wesley’s hymns on baptism. The commentaries seek to elucidate not only the theological emphases of the texts but also their meaning for the church today. •Section 3 moves to the sacrament of Holy Communion and includes excerpts from John Wesley’s sermon “On the Duty of Constant Communion.” Charles Wesley expresses similar views in his treatise on Holy Communion, “And upon the first Day of the Week,” and in his twenty-two stanza poem “Happy the Saints of Former Days.” •Section 4 includes the commentaries on sixteen Wesley hymns for Holy Communion. •Section 5 includes new musical settings for all of the twenty-two Wesley hymns on baptism and Holy Communion included here by twenty contemporary composers from North and South America, Asia, and Europe. In a variety of musical styles they seek to capture the various theological emphases and nuances of the texts.

Social Justice Through the Eyes of Wesley by Irv A. Brendlinger Pdf

Until the late 18th century, evangelical leaders often used the Bible to justify slavery. A notable exception emerged: John Wesley. Dr. Brendlinger has brought to light the strength of Wesley's convictions about slavery and demonstrates how his theology compelled him to work to abolish it.
