Insect Enemies of Western Forests by Anonim Pdf

This field handbook has been prepared to provide information on western forest insects. The discussions are limited to the insects and the problems which they raise in the management and protection of the forests of the Western States, although the general principles of control are applicable to other forest regions as well. It is hoped that the information assembled will add timber owners and foresters in recognizing the work of important western forest insects, in applying suitable control measures, or in adjusting forest practices so as to reduce losses from this source to the lowest possible point.

Biology and Control of the Western Pine Beetle by John Martin Miller,Frederick Paul Keen Pdf

This publication reviews the results of research on the western pine beetle up to July 1, 1952. It shows the progress that has been made in over a half-century of study of this one bark beetle. It also records the trials and errors--the research that ran into blind alleys. The record of this pioneer effort in the field of forest entomology in the United States should be of great help to research workers who are faced with similar problems.

The Western Bark Beetle Research Group by Anonim Pdf

"The compilation of papers in this proceedings is based on a symposium sponsored by the Insect and Diseases Working Group (D5) at the 2007 Society of American Foresters (SAF) convention in Portland, Oregon. The selection of topics parallels the research priorities of the Western Bark Beetle Research Group (WBBRG) (USDA Forest Service, Research and Development), which had been recently formed at the time of the symposium. Reflecting a unique partnership within the Forest Service, each paper was jointly prepared by a research scientist with the WBBRG and one or more entomologists with Forest Health Protection (USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry). Among these papers is a description of the currently elevated impacts of bark beetles in the Western United States; descriptions of the current state of knowledge of bark beetle response to vegetation management and also to climate change; discussions of the complex interactions of bark beetles and fire and of the complex ecological and socioeconomic impacts of infestations; an overview of the use of semiochemical (behavioral chemicals)-based technology for conifer protection; and a case study exemplifying efforts to assess risks posed by nonnative invasive bark beetles." --
