Western Himalaya and Tibet by Thomas Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from Western Himalaya and Tibet: A Narrative of a Journey Through the Mountains of Northern India, During the Years 1847-8 For the plates which accompany the work I have to thank Mr. Winterbottom, who very kindly permitted me to select from a series of sketches those which I thought most suitable. This was not an easy task; but in the two views of the neighbourhood of Iskardo I found so faithful a representation of the extremely rugged scenery of the Tibetan mountains, contrasted with the level plain of Iskardo, and the lacustrine strata of the neighbourhood, that no more desirable illustra tions for a journey in Tibet could be conceived. The little vignette, too, though it does not represent any part of the country through which I travelled, is precisely similar to many ravines in Rondu, and serves to show that the Gilgit valley is quite the same in general appearance with that district. I was more particularly desirous of introducing this sketch, from the very faithful representation it contains of the alluvial platforms which skirt the streams in every part of Tibet. Not illustrated. 1852 edition. Excerpt: ...than when the sky was clear. The hazy weather was once or twice dissipated by violent winds, without any fall of snow on the open plain; but more generally it increased gradually, till the sky was completely and densely overcast, and snow began again to fall, perhaps most frequently during the night. During the greater part of the winter the snow was invariably in extremely minute grains. It was not till the latter part of February, when spring was rapidly approaching, that large flakes fell. I more than once observed the phenomenon of small quantities of extremely fine-grained snow falling when the sky was quite clear, and the air at the surface of the earth quite motionless. During clear weather very little thaw took place, the cold produced by radiation appearing to counteract the sun's action; at the same time the snow diminished rapidly by evaporation, which was not the case when the sky was overcast. The fall of snow was evidently much less considerable in the open plain than on the mountains round Iskardo. During the heavier falls, the snow on the steep mountain slopes often slipped downwards. It was but rarely that these avalanches were visible, but the noise of the snow in motion was heard like distant thunder, often many times a day, and the bare spots which it had left could be seen after the snow-storm had ceased. When the weather was settled, the wind was in general very gentle, and blew up the valley of the Indus; during snow-storms it was usually violent, and very irregular in direction. The storms came mostly from the south246 Winter At Iskardo. February, west, a moisture-bringing upper current of air from that direction being condensed by the dry and cold north wind. My collections had accumulated to such an extent, and...

Illustrations: 1 B/w Illustration and 1 Map Description: Very little literature is available on western Himalayas and Ladakh and this book is a narrative of travels undertaken by the author on foot covering a very large part of the Himalayas and Tibet, starting from Simla and ending at Jammu. The author travelled the length and breadth of the Shivalik hills, going deep into Tibet and crossing over to Ladakh, Gilgit and Kashmir. The book is a treat on the description of the area covered by the author, its natural beauty, the shrubs and plants which are found in abundance, besides the geographical and geological details, and the history and ethnography of different races which inhabit this vast area. Being valuable the book will be a welcome addition to the very scanty material available on western Tibet and Ladakh.

Discoveries in Western Tibet and the Western Himalayas by International Association for Tibetan Studies. Seminar Pdf

Recent archaeological discoveries and scientific research especially focussed on western Tibet and the western Himalayas have resulted in a remarkable redefinition of the historical and cultural processes of the entire Indo-Tibetan civilisation. The present volume reflects these sometimes startling new insights for the first time, covering the wide time range from the Zhang zhung period up to the 20th century, spanning secular, religious and economic history, as well as art and archaeology.

Indian Tibet Tibetan India by Peter Van Ham Pdf

Inspired by the first cultural expedition into the Western Himalayas by August Hermann Francke in 1909 which resulted in the region's denomination as Indian Tibet, the author has travelled for years in the long inaccessible Indo-Tibetan border regions after they were opened to the public in the beginning of the 1990s. In secluded and remote high-altitude-valleys of breath-taking grandeur he documented some of the last refuges of Tibetan and early Indian culture and photographed people and the unique testimonies of their art, religion and architecture. With the aid of rare archival and contemporary textual and visual materials, many seen here for the first time ever, the author draws a comprehensive picture of the fascinating history of the exploration of the present Indian border region towards Tibet. Knowledgably he describes the customs of its various inhabitants many of whom still follow their age-old traditions which at present are being stimulated and revived by the many exiled Tibetans that have found a new home in the region, thus designating it as 'Tibetan India.' Contents: Foreword: Variety Endangered-Michel Peissel; Introduction and Acknowledgements Indian Tibet; Tibetan India-Cultural Exchange, Cross-relations and Interactions in the Western Himalayas; The Exploration of the Western Himalayas; Shimla and Kinnaur The Britons and the Fairy Land; Spiti Buddha's Mountain Desert; Lahaul Meeting Place of the Sun and Moon; Western Himalayan Buddhist Art.Influences, Styles, Developments; Zanskar Valley of the White Copper; Rupshu Lakes and Nomads; Ladakh Little Tibet of Passes; Nubra Dunes to Central Asia; Dahhanu Refuge of the Lost Aryans.
