This is a companion report to the 1989 Fraser Lowland wetlands inventory (published in June 1992 as Technical report series no. 146). This report answers the following questions : What is the ownership status of the wetlands identified in the 1989 inventory? What is the current level of protection for each of these wetlands? What agencies are responsible for managing public lands on which these wetlands are located? What is meant by "protection" is discussed and the criteria used to categorize the Fraser Lowland wetlands for this report are described. Copies of the original 1:50,000 maps from the 1989 report are included in an appendix showing the location of each of the wetland units. A dBase III file is also included with all inventory material collected to date ie. 1989 data as well as the status data from this report.

Canadian Wetlands by Rod Giblett Pdf

In Canadian Wetlands, Rod Giblett reads the Canadian canon against the grain, critiquing its popular representation of wetlands and proposing alternatives by highlighting the work of recent and contemporary Canadian authors, such as Douglas Lochhead and Harry Thurston, and by entering into dialogue with American writers. The book will engender mutual respect between researchers for the contribution that different disciplinary approaches can and do make to the study and conservation of wetlands internationally.

The World's Largest Wetlands by Lauchlan H. Fraser,Paul A. Keddy Pdf

During the past century approximately fifty percent of the world's wetlands have been destroyed, largely due to human activities. Increased human population has lead to shrinkage of wetland areas, and data show that as they shrink, their important functions decline. Reduced wetland area causes more flooding in Spring, less available water during drought, greater risk of water pollution, and less food production and reduced carbon storage. Much of the remaining pristine wetland systems are found in the world's largest wetlands, and yet these areas have received surprisingly little scientific research or attention. This volume presents the views of leading experts on each of the world's largest wetland systems. Here, this international team of authors share their understanding of the ecological dynamics of large wetlands and their significance, and emphasise their need of conservation.

Saving the Heart of the Fraser by Marvin Leslie Rosenau Pdf

The lands adjacent to and influenced by the hydrology of a stream, termed riparian areas, include some of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on earth. They are also some of the most vulnerable and endangered habitats in the world. By any measure, the floodplain and channels of the lower Fraser River between Hope and Mission, British Columbia represent some of Canada's most biologically significant riparian and aquatic ecosystems. This area is currently under extreme stress as a result of human activities relating to urbanization, ongoing resource extraction, agriculture and industrial development. Still, despite 150 years of impacts associated with human perturbation, the remaining in-stream and riparian biodiversity of the lower Fraser River reach remains considerable. This is all the more remarkable given that this part of the river lies at the doorstep of over two million people who reside in the lower mainland of British Columbia.

Birds of British Columbia, Volume 4 by Wayne Campbell,Neil K. Dawe,Ian McTaggart-Cowan,John M. Cooper,Gary W. Kaiser,Michael C.E. McNall Pdf

This much-awaited final volume of The Birds of British Columbia completes what some have called one of the most important regional ornithological works in North America. It is the culmination of more than 25 years of effort by the authors who, with the assistance of thousands of dedicated volunteers throughout the province, have created the basic reference work on the avifauna of British Columbia. Volume 4 covers the last half of the passerines and describes 102 species, including the warblers, sparrows, grosbeaks, blackbirds, and finches. The text builds upon the authoritative format of the previous volumes and is supported by hundreds of full-colour illustrations, including detailed distribution maps, unique habitat shots, and beautiful photographs of the birds, their nests, eggs, and young. In addition, a species update lists and describes 27 species of birds new to the province since the first three volumes were published. The book concludes with Synopsis: The Birds of British Columbia into the 21st Century, which synthesizes data and information from all four volumes and looks at the conservation challenges facing birds in the new millennium. The four volumes in The Birds of British Columbia provide unprecedented coverage of the region's birds, presenting a wealth of information on the ornithological history, regional environment, habitat, breeding habits, migratory movements, seasonality and distribution patterns of 472 species of birds. It is the complete reference work for birdwatchers, ornithologists and naturalists.

Openings by Laura Cameron,UBC Academic Women's Association Pdf

The "Opening" chapter reflects on the connection between historical and technological frontiers. "Listening for Pleasure" discusses oral histories as they relate to the negotiated and contested space of Sumas Lake. "Margins and Mosquitoes" recovers archival records from Victoria to Ottawa to explore flood-lake involvements federally, provincially, and locally. "Memory Device" moves into the archive of land and waterscapes, looking for connections between place and history, mindful of both Native oral tradition and written accounts of the lake. The concluding chapter, "One More Byte," written from the perspective of a mosquito, attempts to distance this project from the work of modernization while assessing the value of interactive history. An independent but complementary hypermedia essay "Disappearing a Lake" is located on this website (scroll up) at http://www.mqup.mcgill.ca/files/cameron_laura http://www.mqup.mcgill.ca/files/cameron_laura
