Empire of Cotton by Sven Beckert Pdf

WINNER OF THE BANCROFT PRIZE • A Pulitzer Prize finalist that's as unsettling as it is enlightening: a book that brilliantly weaves together the story of cotton with how the present global world came to exist. “Masterly … An astonishing achievement.” —The New York Times The empire of cotton was, from the beginning, a fulcrum of constant global struggle between slaves and planters, merchants and statesmen, workers and factory owners. Sven Beckert makes clear how these forces ushered in the world of modern capitalism, including the vast wealth and disturbing inequalities that are with us today. In a remarkably brief period, European entrepreneurs and powerful politicians recast the world’s most significant manufacturing industry, combining imperial expansion and slave labor with new machines and wage workers to make and remake global capitalism.

Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ...cotton industry of any changes in our fiscal system. Burdens imposed upon J j imports from foreign countries would necessarily navel1 reflected effects in a diminution of our exports. Our foreign trade in cottons would not escape bearing some share of the diminution. In what degree our various lines of export would be affected it is impossible to say a priori, but certainly they would not all be equally affected. The reduction of our exports would take place along lines of least resistance, which it would not be difficult to define, and it is quite conceivable that the cotton trade would not be one of the trades to suffer only slightly. But the important bearing of the figures just given is that losses in respect of our trade with foreign countries could not be recouped in any considerable degree through foreign goods being excluded from our colonial markets. Out of 26,500,000 worth of imported cotton goods, Canada, Cape Colony, Australia, New Zealand, and India bought less than 2,000,000 worth from foreign countries in the years for which figures are given above. In the periods examined above the foreign exports for consumption in all our Colonies and Possessions could not have exceeded 2,500,000, for more than 80 per cent. of our exports of cotton goods to our Colonies and Possessions were destined for the countries enumerated. We could, indeed, gain some ground by pushing the manufactures of India and Canada out of their own markets, but it is not to be imagined that the Colonies and Possessions would allow any of their industries to be damaged without a struggle. We must not enter here upon the question of colonial preference, and certainly it is not to be judged from the standpoint of one industry alone, nor indeed...

Cotton by Giorgio Riello Pdf

Today's world textile and garment trade is valued at a staggering $425 billion. We are told that under the pressure of increasing globalisation, it is India and China that are the new world manufacturing powerhouses. However, this is not a new phenomenon: until the industrial revolution, Asia manufactured great quantities of colourful printed cottons that were sold to places as far afield as Japan, West Africa and Europe. Cotton explores this earlier globalised economy and its transformation after 1750 as cotton led the way in the industrialisation of Europe. By the early nineteenth century, India, China and the Ottoman Empire switched from world producers to buyers of European cotton textiles, a position that they retained for over two hundred years. This is a fascinating and insightful story which ranges from Asian and European technologies and African slavery to cotton plantations in the Americas and consumer desires across the globe.

Losing the Thread by Jim Powell Pdf

This is the first full-length study of the effect of the American Civil War on Britain's raw cotton trade and on the Liverpool cotton market. It includes an analysis of primary sources never used by historians. Before the civil war, America supplied 80 per cent of Britain's cotton. In August 1861, this fell to almost zero, where it remained for four years. Despite increased supplies from elsewhere, Britain's largest industry received only 36 per cent of the raw material it needed from 1862-64. This book establishes the facts of Britain's raw cotton supply during the war: how much there was of it, in absolute terms and related to the demand, where it came from and why, how much it cost, and what effect the reduced supply had on Britain's cotton manufacture. It includes an enquiry into the causes of the Lancashire cotton famine, which contradicts the historical consensus on the subject. Examining the impact of the civil war on Liverpool and its raw cotton market, this thought-provoking book demonstrates how reckless speculation infested and distorted the market, and lays bare the shadowy world of the Liverpool cotton brokers, who profited hugely from the war while the rest of Lancashire starved.

Inside Money by Zachary Karabell Pdf

A sweeping history of the legendary private investment firm Brown Brothers Harriman, exploring its central role in the story of American wealth and its rise to global power Conspiracy theories have always swirled around Brown Brothers Harriman, and not without reason. Throughout the nineteenth century, when America was convulsed by a devastating financial panic essentially every twenty years, Brown Brothers quietly went from strength to strength, propping up the U.S. financial system at crucial moments and catalyzing successive booms, from the cotton trade and the steamship to the railroad, while largely managing to avoid the unwelcome attention that plagued some of its competitors. By the turn of the twentieth century, Brown Brothers was unquestionably at the heart of what was meant by an American Establishment. As America's reach extended beyond its shores, Brown Brothers worked hand in glove with the State Department, notably in Nicaragua in the early twentieth century, where the firm essentially took over the country's economy. To the Brown family, the virtue of their dealings was a given; their form of muscular Protestantism, forged on the playing fields of Groton and Yale, was the acme of civilization, and it was their duty to import that civilization to the world. When, during the Great Depression, Brown Brothers ensured their strength by merging with Averell Harriman's investment bank to form Brown Brothers Harriman, the die was cast for the role the firm would play on the global stage during World War II and thereafter, as its partners served at the highest levels of government to shape the international system that defines the world to this day. In Inside Money, acclaimed historian, commentator, and former financial executive Zachary Karabell offers the first full and frank look inside this institution against the backdrop of American history. Blessed with complete access to the company's archives, as well as a thrilling understanding of the larger forces at play, Karabell has created an X-ray of American power--financial, political, cultural--as it has evolved from the early 1800s to the present. Today, unlike many of its competitors, Brown Brothers Harriman remains a private partnership and a beacon of sustainable capitalism, having forgone the heady speculative upsides of the past thirty years but also having avoided any role in the devastating downsides. The firm is no longer in the command capsule of the American economy, but, arguably, that is to its credit. If its partners cleaved to any one adage over the generations, it is that a relentless pursuit of more can destroy more than it creates.

Brazil¿s Cotton Industry by James Kiawu,Constanza Valdes,Stephen MacDonald Pdf

Brazil is one of the world¿s leading cotton producers and an important competitor of the U.S. in Asian and European cotton markets. This situation has come about as a result of trade liberalization, structural transformation of the Brazilian economy, and the emergence of new cotton producing regions using advanced technologies and benefiting from targeted government support. Brazil¿s access to additional agricultural land and recent favorable cotton prices suggest the country¿s cotton production could rise even more than previously expected. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find report.
