When It's Over by Barbara Ridley Pdf

Coming of age in Prague in the 1930s, Lena Kulkova is inspired by the left-wing activists who resist the rise of fascism. She meets Otto, a refugee from Hitler’s Germany, and follows him to Paris to work for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. As the war in Spain ends and a far greater war engulfs the continent, Lena gets stuck in Paris with no news from her Jewish family, including her beloved baby sister, left behind in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Otto, meanwhile, has fled to a village in England, and urges Lena to join him, but she can’t obtain a visa. When Lena and Otto are finally reunited, the safe haven Lena has hoped for doesn’t last long. Their relationship becomes strained, and Lena is torn between her loyalty to Otto and her growing attraction to Milton, the son of the eccentric Lady of the Manor. As the war continues, she yearns to be reunited with her sister, while Milton is preoccupied with the political turmoil that leads to the landslide defeat of Churchill in the 1945 election. Based on a true story, When It’s Over is a moving, resonant, and timely read about the lives of war refugees, dramatic political changes, and the importance of family, love, and hope.

When It's Over by Joe Dupuis Pdf

When It's Over is a collection of 21, life-grabbing short stories that stay in the memory long after the reading. The stories are about extremes, what people do to get through. Ordinary people in extraordinary situations, like Grace, the loner, Billy Currie, the eel flinger, Amos and Thoms, old coots who tackle an iceberg, Jimmy Buttons, an innocent caught in the slime of politics, Yanic, a wilderness nomad eulogized by Quebec's separatists, Charlie, the jogger who dares challenge Biblical prophecy, Bernie, who hides from a dark past in the bowels of Macy's, and the old Indian sachem who stalks with the grizzlies. When It's Over focuses on someone on the edge, someone different with unusual powers or gifts in a sympathetic way that makes for freshness and added interest.

Adam was destined to fight on another battlefield, as the dreams of combat penetrated his sleep, loud noises interrupted his days and alcohol helped him through four years of medical school. He had lost hope of ever being able to dodge the dark cloud that hovered over him, casting a shadow of impending doom over any small moment of joy, until he met the woman who would become the love of his life. This is a story of the impact and lasting effects of massive psychic trauma -- a story of love and being loved -- a story of redemption -- a story to be told and not forgotten - for it's never over when it's over.

Wake Me When It's Over by Rob Sacher Pdf

This is my story; I am a musician and entrepreneur who created and co-owned nightclubs, now part of the history of music and nightlife in New York City. Starting with my first club, Sanctuary, and continuing with Mission in Manhattan's East Village and ending with the highly regarded Luna Lounge, this is the first book to cover a part of the New York rock music scene that came after punk, new wave, and no wave. Musicians and bands including Joey Ramone, The Psychedelic Furs, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, The Sugarcubes, The Sisters Of Mercy, and Killing Joke, among others, would party together at Mission. It was the late 1980s, a time of MTV's "120 Minutes," melodic British psychedelic guitar rock, Wax Trax industrial rock records, and a dangerous but exciting Lower East Side. Moving further ahead, my story continues with the sale of the Mission and the opening of Luna Lounge in 1995, possibly the most important venue of its size in New York. Luna was the stage where The Strokes, Interpol, The National, Longwave, stellastarr*, The Bravery, The Hold Steady, and many other bands first performed before friends and early fans of the bands. Also, Luna would host free performances from Marty Willson-Piper (The Church), Black Box Recorder, Sonic Boom, and Kid Rock. This is also a narrative about Elliott Smith as he wrote out his work for the album, XO, while sitting at the Luna Lounge bar and his subsequent launch into stardom. In addition, Luna Lounge was a well known Monday night comedy spot where cutting edge comics worked new material in front of a supportive audience as part of the "Eating It" comedy series, the room where fans could see, among others, Jon Stewart, Janeane Garofalo, Jeff Garlin, Rob Cordry, Greg Fitzsimmons, Lewis Black, Jim Norton, Lewis C.K., and Marc Maron. Finally, this is the story of the forced closing of Luna Lounge, a victim of the rising real estate values which came as a result of the quality of life initiatives set out by the Republican mayors who have controlled the city for the last twenty years. Tell Me When It's Over by B Celeste Pdf

I was twelve years old when I met one of the world's hottest celebrities. Thirteen when I was welcomed into his family.Fourteen when I realized what his unconditional love felt like. Fifteen when he helped me figure out what hope was. And sixteen when my mother's biggest lie changed our lives forever. I swore I would never be like the woman whose chronic lies impacted everybody around her, but then I'd be a hypocrite. Because three years after the truth came out, and I reunited with the boy whose innocent love had been taken from me, I realized I was living the biggest lie of all. The one where I pretended I wasn't in love with Kyler Bishop.

Why Bob Dylan Matters by Richard F. Thomas Pdf

“The coolest class on campus” – The New York Times When the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Bob Dylan in 2016, a debate raged. Some celebrated, while many others questioned the choice. How could the world’s most prestigious book prize be awarded to a famously cantankerous singer-songwriter who wouldn’t even deign to attend the medal ceremony? In Why Bob Dylan Matters, Harvard Professor Richard F. Thomas answers this question with magisterial erudition. A world expert on Classical poetry, Thomas was initially ridiculed by his colleagues for teaching a course on Bob Dylan alongside his traditional seminars on Homer, Virgil, and Ovid. Dylan’s Nobel Prize brought him vindication, and he immediately found himself thrust into the spotlight as a leading academic voice in all matters Dylanological. Today, through his wildly popular Dylan seminar—affectionately dubbed "Dylan 101"—Thomas is introducing a new generation of fans and scholars to the revered bard’s work. This witty, personal volume is a distillation of Thomas’s famous course, and makes a compelling case for moving Dylan out of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the pantheon of Classical poets. Asking us to reflect on the question, "What makes a classic?", Thomas offers an eloquent argument for Dylan’s modern relevance, while interpreting and decoding Dylan’s lyrics for readers. The most original and compelling volume on Dylan in decades, Why Bob Dylan Matters will illuminate Dylan’s work for the Dylan neophyte and the seasoned fanatic alike. You’ll never think about Bob Dylan in the same way again.

Cuba on the Verge by Leila Guerriero Pdf

“[An] anthology of stupendously astute essays...Guerriero’s meticulously curated dozen essays offers an irresistibly beckoning window onto a nation just 90 miles from American shores, though far away in practice and culture.” — Booklist (starred review) “...This anthology captures much of the broad, surreal spectrum of experience possible on the world’s most complex and controversial island.” — Alex Mar, author of Witches of America “These essays speak to and against one another, they cannot be politically aligned, and that is all as it should be - but what unites them is brilliant writing, a depth of intelligence, and a desire to pull us down from fantastic abstractions to the level of the human.” — Justin Torres, author of We the Animals “[A] fascinating anthology . . . Not quite a travelogue, this appealing volume will nevertheless satisfy any Americans wanting to be transported into the lives and experiences of real Cubans.” — Publishers Weekly “This fascinating collection of essays explores Cuba’s modern transformation, tackling topics from politics to music to baseball. You’ll find yourself both informed and entertained.” — Paste Magazine “[An] excellent new anthology.” — New York Review of Books
