Modern Occult Rhetoric by Joshua Gunn Pdf

A broadly interdisciplinary study of the pervasive secrecy in America cultural, political, and religious discourse. The occult has traditionally been understood as the study of secrets of the practice of mysticism or magic. This book broadens our understanding of the occult by treating it as a rhetorical phenomenon tied to language and symbols and more central to American culture than is commonly assumed. Joshua Gunn approaches the occult as an idiom, examining the ways in which acts of textual criticism and interpretation are occultic in nature, as evident in practices as diverse as academic scholarship, Freemasonry, and television production. Gunn probes, for instance, the ways in which jargon employed by various social and professional groups creates barriers and fosters secrecy. From the theory wars of cultural studies to the Satanic Panic that swept the national mass media in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gunn shows how the paradox of a hidden, buried, or secret meaning that cannot be expressed in language appears time and time again in Western culture. These recurrent patterns, Gunn argues, arise from a generalized, popular anxiety about language and its limitations. Ultimately, Modern Occult Rhetoric demonstrates the indissoluble relationship between language, secrecy, and publicity, and the centrality of suspicion in our daily lives.

Charles Stanley's Handbook for Christian Living by Charles F. Stanley Pdf

Since life is a journey, feel free to stop and ask for directions. Previously released as the bestselling The Glorious Journey, this practical volume by Charles Stanley shows readers how to put God's Word to work in their daily lives with this easy-to-apply handbook. As believers, our desire is to follow the Lord more closely and to utilize His Word for maximum impact in our lives. Occasionally, however, we find ourselves not even knowing the questions to ask, or the best way to approach Scripture in search of answers. Charles F. Stanley's Handbook for Christian Living is not a lofty theological work, nor is it an academic commentary. Instead, Dr. Stanley has prepared a friendly, easy-to-use help system for every believer. In this collection, he speaks with authority on such issues as: the real purpose of baptism how to treat others at work a proper view of those in government how grace saves us and how worry robs us what freedom reallly is He also shares biblical insight into relationships, children, parenting, loneliness, sexual pressures, as well as strategies for personal growth. From the thorny issues of daily life to a framework for the end times (and everything in between), Charles F. Stanley's Handbook for Christian brings Scripture to life, makes sense of the hard questions, and enhances your understanding of the way life was meant to be lived.

Satanism by Bob Passantino,Gretchen Passantino Pdf

Belief in Satan worship is often viewed as an embarrassing throwback to the superstitions of another time. And "selling your soul to the Devil"? Nothing more than an overworked theme in literature and opera. To the contrary, Bob and Gretchen Passantino show how, in the midst of prevailing attitudes of skepticism and disbelief, Satanism has made unprecedented inroads into our society.

The Christian Countercult Movement by Douglas E. Cowan Pdf

Many seemingly strange questions on yoga, salvation, religious pluralism, and so forth have been actively debated among members of a small but influential group of evangelical apologists known as the Christian countercult movement. This Element explores the history of this movement from its origins in the anti-heresy writings of the early church to its modern development as a reaction to religious pluralism in North America. It contrasts the apologetic Christian countercult movement with its secular anticult counterpart and explains how faith-based opposition both to new religious movements and to non-Christian religions will only deepen as religious pluralism increases. It provides a concise understanding of the two principal goals of Christian countercult apologetics: support for the evangelization of non-Christian believers and maintenance for the perceived superiority of the evangelical Christian worldview.

Historical Dictionary of New Religious Movements by George D. Chryssides Pdf

New religious movements--commonly known as cults--are defined as organizations that have arisen within the last 200 years. Most treatments of these movements have typically resorted to sensationalism rather than objectivity, and New religious movements tend to receive negative media publicity. Despite their unfavorable portrayal in popular culture, however, new religious movements are a global phenomenon and much remains to be studied about these movements. In this newly updated second edition of the Historical Dictionary of New Religious Movements, George D. Chryssides traces the rise and development of new religious movements throughout the world. An updated introduction summarizes the phenomenon of new religious movements and lays out the changes to the dictionary since the 2001 edition, while the main body of the dictionary consists of close to 600 cross-referenced entries on key figures, ideas, themes, and places related to various new religious movements. An index organizes the information in the dictionary, and a comprehensive bibliography leads the researcher to further sources. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about new religious movements.

Devil. Dare To Smash Him by Ítalo Oliveira Pdf

This book is the best revelation of our century: A demon can be killed! If it s so, why does nobody discuss it? Because all religions are under the devil s subliminal control and have an implicit pact with him, like: I don t reveal your weaknesses or talk about you, and you don t wreck me. This treaty was so actual that Jesus of Nazareth himself had to come to this planet to reveal it. The meeting had been tense. The head of that legion was furious. He had come back from the meeting with his head turned into a frog s face and much shorter. They all knew that he had been demoted. And when that happened, someone would be sacrificed mercilessly. He inquired the responsibilities of each sector and each legion, raged, shouted, foamed. As the new face changed his muzzle anatomy, his voice had also changed. It was thinner. It sounds so funny, fuzzy, wird… mortal. None of those demons under his command didn t like him at all. In fact, no one liked anyone there. In that same section, there were other platoons. Some of them were too big; others were tiny. There was the insecticide platoon, which was microscopic. They specialized in developing diseases and pests, and each platoon had its instructor. It was common to have three or four refresher courses per year. At the end of each internship, they went to earth to practice everything they learned in the classroom. This platoon was the riot and death squad, they weren t the most specialized there, but they fulfilled their role well. In general, their body measured sixty or seventy centimeters. They had thick fur, and looked like a porcupine. The legs were tiny, and the arms were twice as long as the whole body. They were brown, as they only caused riots; they wore no horns. None of them looked human, they hated that shape. Usually, a long, pointed snout or tooth was distinctive to demons specializing in terror and death. They wore a face that resembled a theater mask. They spent months training a new technique, a new psychological weapon, a new tactic. When they were efficient, the main leaders were promoted, but when they failed they were punished by their superiors.
