Hannah Arendt and the Limits of Total Domination by Michal Aharony Pdf

Responding to the increasingly influential role of Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy in recent years, Hannah Arendt and the Limits of Total Domination: The Holocaust, Plurality, and Resistance, critically engages with Arendt’s understanding of totalitarianism. According to Arendt, the main goal of totalitarianism was total domination; namely, the virtual eradication of human legality, morality, individuality, and plurality. This attempt, in her view, was most fully realized in the concentration camps, which served as the major "laboratories" for the regime. While Arendt focused on the perpetrators’ logic and drive, Michal Aharony examines the perspectives and experiences of the victims and their ability to resist such an experiment. The first book-length study to juxtapose Arendt’s concept of total domination with actual testimonies of Holocaust survivors, this book calls for methodological pluralism and the integration of the voices and narratives of the actors in the construction of political concepts and theoretical systems. To achieve this, Aharony engages with both well-known and non-canonical intellectuals and writers who survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Additionally, she analyzes the oral testimonies of survivors who are largely unknown, drawing from interviews conducted in Israel and in the U.S., as well as from videotaped interviews from archives around the world. Revealing various manifestations of unarmed resistance in the camps, this study demonstrates the persistence of morality and free agency even under the most extreme and de-humanizing conditions, while cautiously suggesting that absolute domination is never as absolute as it claims or wishes to be. Scholars of political philosophy, political science, history, and Holocaust studies will find this an original and compelling book.

Gray Zones by Jonathan Petropoulos,John Roth Pdf

Few essays about the Holocaust are better known or more important than Primo Levi’s reflections on what he called “the gray zone,” a reality in which moral ambiguity and compromise were pronounced. In this volume accomplished Holocaust scholars, among them Raul Hilberg, Gerhard L. Weinberg, Christopher Browning, Peter Hayes, and Lynn Rapaport, explore the terrain that Levi identified. Together they bring a necessary interdisciplinary focus to bear on timely and often controversial topics in cutting-edge Holocaust studies that range from historical analysis to popular culture. While each essay utilizes a particular methodology and argues for its own thesis, the volume as a whole advances the claim that the more we learn about the Holocaust, the more complex that event turns out to be. Only if ambiguities and compromises in the Holocaust and its aftermath are identified, explored, and at times allowed to remain--lest resolution deceive us--will our awareness of the Holocaust and its implications be as full as possible.

Untold Secrets, Lost Innocence, Family Betrayal, Sex Sells Ripple effects of being molested followed me for years. There are only so many ways a little girl can train herself to accept the horrific abuse from the hands of her dad. I came up with a few unique ways. Being choked into submission definitely stands out as one. Burying myself in my head was the best coping mechanism I came up with during the years of abuse. Except it only got worse from there. As a teenager, how do you process being raped? As a young woman, how do you handle the fear of taking a bath, wondering if a someone is going to come running into the bathroom after you? Maybe I should just ignore the fact I had experienced so much sexual abuse. What's left to focus on in my life? Well . . . - There's being in the center of multiple family secrets. - Reoccurring nightmares reminding me I killed the one person I knew loved me unconditionally. - Dropped out of high school and had absolutely no self-esteem. - Caught in the midst of a child abuse investigation when I'm not the victim. - Buried some family, lost some friends. - Seal that off with a few miscarriages, a couple abortions, a car accident, a remorseful stalker, and a jealous revenge-seeking ex-lover. Welcome to my life. It just didn't seem like the pain and drama would ever end. Until I fell in love. This man was like no other man I've ever known. He loved me unconditionally. He told me every single day, even when I refused to listen. Falling in love with him saved my life. He loved me so much he gave his life for me. So, what am I willing to do in return for him? Jesus, this is for you!

Originally published in 1998, this shockingly prescient novel's timely message of hope and resistance in the face of fanaticism is more relevant than ever. In 2032, Lauren Olamina has survived the destruction of her home and family, and realized her vision of a peaceful community in northern California based on her newly founded faith, Earthseed. The fledgling community provides refuge for outcasts facing persecution after the election of an ultra-conservative president who vows to "make America great again." In an increasingly divided and dangerous nation, Lauren's subversive colony--a minority religious faction led by a young black woman--becomes a target for President Jarret's reign of terror and oppression. Years later, Asha Vere reads the journals of a mother she never knew, Lauren Olamina. As she searches for answers about her own past, she also struggles to reconcile with the legacy of a mother caught between her duty to her chosen family and her calling to lead humankind into a better future.

Nightmare of the Past by Knight Breeze Pdf

For over three hundred years, the Diarchy of Ari has been free from the Shadowfell, the name given to the dark side of the once tidally locked planet of Euti. For three centuries the bird-like people known as the dakri have been free from the nightmares given flesh that the Shadowfell bred, as well as the tyrannical ruling class that claimed sovereignty over every dakri alive. Ari's rulers, the Solar Diarch, have led their people into peace and prosperity the likes of which the world has never known. Yet, no matter how great the peace is, there are always those who would shatter it for their own selfish ends. Six months ago, a strange metal object fell from the sky, and out of its carcass came a lone survivor. Twisted by monstrosities beyond comprehension, he was used as a weapon of war for an empire that desperately seeks to reclaim its former glory, and on his lips was a dire warning: They will come for you next. Now, with an interstellar war at their doorstep, Tor, the King of the Morning, and his wife, Ja'vail, the Queen of the Night, rally their allies and attempt to make peace with old enemies, for the fires that swiftly approach their little world are far worse than any they have witnessed before. Yet, even as the forces of Ari marshal to battle, dark forces work from within, moving to undermine the little diarchy's efforts to stave off the death of their world. More than just nightmares lurked in the dark of the Shadowfell, and they seek to restore that ancient curse, to regain their power over the Children of the Sky, and see the invaders not as the scourge that they are, but as tools to aid them in their conquest. And unbeknownst to all, an ancient power claws at its cage, seeking vengeance against heroes and gods that entombed it within. With alien monsters at the gates, and evils conspiring from within, the Diarchy of Ari must seek aid from the unlikeliest of sources, while caught in the middle of it all is a single human, desperately struggling to survive against the terror of the past that threatens to utterly destroy everything he cares about. This is the second book in The Humanity Within Trilogy. An epic series written by Knight Breeze following a story where swords and sorcery clash with an alien empire, all while a single mutated human caught in the crossfire desperately tries his best to survive. This series contains the following printed or planned books: What I've Become. Nightmare of the Past. Legends of the Future. (Planned, title still subject to change)

We Are the Middle of Forever by Dahr Jamail,Stan Rushworth Pdf

With a new afterword by the authors A powerful, intimate collection of conversations with Indigenous Americans on the climate crisis and the Earth’s future Although for a great many people, the human impact on the Earth—countless species becoming extinct, pandemics claiming millions of lives, and climate crisis causing worldwide social and environmental upheaval—was not apparent until recently, this is not the case for all people or cultures. For the Indigenous people of the world, radical alteration of the planet, and of life itself, is a story that is many generations long. They have had to adapt, to persevere, and to be courageous and resourceful in the face of genocide and destruction—and their experience has given them a unique understanding of civilizational devastation. An American Library Association Notable Book, We Are the Middle of Forever places Indigenous voices at the center of conversations about today’s environmental crisis. The book draws on interviews with people from different North American Indigenous cultures and communities, generations, and geographic regions, who share their knowledge and experience, their questions, their observations, and their dreams of maintaining the best relationship possible to all of life. A welcome antidote to the despair arising from the climate crisis, We Are the Middle of Forever will be an indispensable aid to those looking for new and different ideas and responses to the challenges we face.

Shaping the Future by Horst Hutter Pdf

Shaping the Future maps out the ascetic practices of a Neitzschean way of life. Hutter argues that Nietzsche's doctrines are attempts and 'temptations' that aim to provoke his free-spirited readers into changing themselves by putting philosophy into practice in their lives.
