Where My Heart Is Turning Ever by Kathleen Diffley Pdf

"During the Civil War and Reconstruction, popular magazines throughout the country published hundreds of short narratives that confronted or evaded the meaning of the Union's great crisis. Yet despite their importance as a measure of the era's cultural temper, these stories have remain largely unexamined in studies of Civil War literature. Where My Heart is Turning Ever is the first volume in a projected trilogy that seeks to recover the significance of this forgotten body of writing. Unearthing more than three hundred stories from sixteen magazines in the South and West as well as the culturally dominant Northeast, Kathleen Diffley examines the effort of popular writers and publications to contain the disruption caused by the war and its aftermath. That effort, she shows, proved especially precarious when writers took up matters of race, political section, and gender. In this volume, Diffley identifies three distinct genres among the stories she investigates: "Old Homestead," which embodies themes of domestic order, collapse, and restoration; "Romance," which represents tensions between the sexes as the result of difficulties imposed by the war and Reconstruction; and "Adventure," which subverts domestic ideals by uprooting characters and situating them outside the home. As she discusses these genres, Diffley relates their messages to the post-bellum congressional debates over constitutional amendments abolishing slavery, guaranteeing federal authority over state jurisdictions, and extending voting rights to black men. She hows how the rhetoric that emerged both in Congress and in popular magazines promoted a new concept of national citizenship, one that transformed ties to kin into ties to country. In addition to discussing the broad spectrum of stories that fall within the three genres she identifies, Diffley includes full text of representative stories by Mark Twain, John W. De Forest, and Rebecca Harding Davis. She then analyzes each story, linking its author's career with the wider cultural and formal patterns that the story reveals. In the subsequent volumes of the trilogy, Diffley will provide a taxonomy of the stories she has uncovered and will examine them in light of reader-response theory. The completed project promises an unprecedented analysis of the ways in which short popular narratives helped readers of that troubled era make sense of the Civil War."--Publisher's description

The Heart's Hard Turning by John Farr Rothrock Pdf

This is the story of Will Rawlins, a gifted physician and scientist derailed by his passion for an enigmatic young woman who wields her sensuality as a weapon. Damaged and directionless, he drifts southward into Mexico, where he is forced to flee prosecution for a crime not of his own doing. Set largely in Sonoran Mexico, Baja California, and the strange, deep sea that divides them, The Heart’s Hard Turning is a story of loyalty and betrayal, despair and courage, friendship and death; a story of a deliverance from evil; and, ultimately, a story of our struggle to learn where to love and whom.

Visions of Glory by Kathleen Diffley,Benjamin Fagan Pdf

Visions of Glory brings together twenty-two images and twenty-two brisk essays, each essay connecting an image to the events that unfolded during a particular year of the Civil War. The book focuses on a diverse set of images that include a depiction of former slaves whipping their erstwhile overseer distributed by an African American publisher, a census graph published in the New York Times, and a cutout of a child’s hand sent by a southern mother to her husband at the front. The essays in this collection reveal how wartime women and men created both written accounts and a visual register to make sense of this pivotal period. The collection proceeds chronologically, providing a nuanced history by highlighting the multiple meanings an assorted group of writers and readers discerned from the same set of circumstances. In so doing, this volume assembles contingent and fractured visions of the Civil War, but its differing perspectives also reveal a set of overlapping concerns. A number of essays focus in particular on African American engagements with visual culture. The collection also emphasizes the role that women played in making, disseminating, or interpreting wartime images. While every essay explores the relationship between image and word, several contributions focus on the ways in which Civil War images complicate an understanding of canonical writers such as Emerson, Melville, and Whitman.

The Better Covenant by Watchman Nee Pdf

The New Covenant is full of God’s grace. In order to enjoy such grace each one who belongs to the Lord must know what this New Covenant is. How sad that many of the Lord’s people today neither appreciate nor understand this New Covenant. For this reason we have a burden to release some messages on the New Covenant. Even so, the New Covenant is such a comprehensive subject that we cannot exhaust its richness with our limited learning, experience and words. Still, we look to God’s grace and are willing to share with His children the little we have received. Our earnest prayer is that God would enable us to know something of the New Covenant and lead us into its spiritual reality.

My Turn by Johan Cruyff Pdf

The autobiography of Dutch soccer legend Johan Cruyff, whose remarkable life and impeccable style have influenced star players and clubs for decades Johan Cruyff embodied a footballing philosophy that now dominates coaching and playing styles in all the leading club sides around the world. You can dispute whether Cruyff was the greatest player ever -- he was certainly one of the top three -- but he is undoubtedly the player who single-handedly changed the nature of the game. My Turn tells the story of Cruyff's remarkable career, built on the techniques he learned playing in the streets of postwar Amsterdam while hoping to be noticed by the city's famous club, Ajax. He would eventually inspire that team to eight league championships and three European cups. He won his first of three Ballons d'Or at twenty-four in 1971. In 1973, Cruyff was sold to Barcelona for a world-record transfer fee. He led the Catalans to victory in La Liga for the first time since 1960, and went on to leave a lasting mark on Spanish soccer. In the 1974 World Cup, Cruyff propelled the Dutch team to the final for the first time. Cruyff's lasting influence, however, is not in the medals he won, but in the style of play he epitomized and then applied to the Barcelona and Ajax teams he coached. His vision of "Total Football" transformed the way soccer was played, and its dazzling fluidity became the basis of the most admired sides around the world. He was the sport's uncompromising genius on and off the field of play.

Imatation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Peter Joseph Arnoudt,Aeterna Press Pdf

THE most ancient special devotion of Christians is doubtless that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Son of God. The holy Sacraments and the other objects of devotion did not yet exist, when the Blessed Virgin Mary found her delight in worshiping the most Sweet Heart of her Jesus; already did Holy Joseph clasp that Heart to his bosom; even then were the Shepherds and the Magi, Simeon and Anna, the Apostles and the Disciples attracted to It and by It: they longed to show to It the affection and love of their hearts. But after Jesus had called upon all men to learn, “that He is meek and humble of Heart;” after He had drawn from the treasury of His Heart that best of all gifts, the Sacrament of the Most Blessed Eucharist; lastly, after He had willed that, upon the Cross, His Heart should be opened, and continue open, as a place of refuge for all; then was devotion to His Divine Heart wonderfully increased. The Guide to the Perplexed by Moses Maimonides Pdf

A landmark new translation of the most significant text in medieval Jewish thought. Written in Arabic and completed around 1190, the Guide to the Perplexed is among the most powerful and influential living texts in Jewish philosophy, a masterwork navigating the straits between religion and science, logic and revelation. The author, Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, commonly known as Maimonides or as Rambam, was a Sephardi Jewish philosopher, jurist, and physician. He wrote his Guide in the form of a letter to a disciple. But the perplexity it aimed to cure might strike anyone who sought to square logic, mathematics, and the sciences with biblical and rabbinic traditions. In this new translation by philosopher Lenn E. Goodman and historian Phillip I. Lieberman, Maimonides' warm, conversational voice and clear explanatory language come through as never before in English. Maimonides knew well the challenges facing serious inquirers at the confluence of the two great streams of thought and learning that Arabic writers labeled 'aql and naql, reason and tradition. The aim of the Guide, he wrote, is to probe the mysteries of physics and metaphysics. But mysteries, to Maimonides, were not conundrums to be celebrated for their obscurity. They were problems to be solved. Maimonides' methods and insights resonate throughout the work of later Jewish thinkers, rationalists, and mystics, and in the work of philosophers like Thomas Aquinas, Spinoza, Leibniz, and Newton. The Guide continues to inspire inquiry, discovery, and vigorous debate among philosophers, theologians, and lay readers today. Goodman and Lieberman's extensive and detailed commentary provides readers with historical context and philosophical enlightenment, giving generous access to the nuances, complexities, and profundities of what is widely agreed to be the most significant textual monument of medieval Jewish thought, a work that still offers a key to those who hope to harmonize religious commitments and scientific understanding.
