"Wild Money" by Emily Harwell,Human Rights Watch (Organization) Pdf

"Indonesia has one of the world's largest remaining forest areas, with exports from its lucrative timber sector valued at US$6.6 billion in 2007, second only to Brazil and more than all African and Central American nations combined. But in recent years almost half of all Indonesian timber has been logged illegally, at a staggering cost to the Indonesian economy and public welfare. Between 2003 and 2006, the losses due to illegal logging, corruption, and mismanagement totaled nearly $2 billion annually. 'Wild Money' documents an often-overlooked toll of this destruction, the widespread spillover effects of forestry sector corruption on governance and human rights. The individuals responsible for the losses are rarely held accountable, in part because some officials in both law enforcement and the judiciary are also deeply corrupted by illegal logging interests. This impunity undermines respect for human rights. Indonesian citizens living closest to the forests have borne the brunt of unbridled forest destruction, and these communities remain locked in poverty without basic services. Funds that could be going to improve public welfare and meet Indonesia's obligations to realize its citizen's economic and social rights are instead being siphoned off to enrich a handful of individuals. In the province of West Kalimantan, funds lost to illegal logging and forest sector corruption in recent years have been some fifty times the annual provincial health budget. 'Wild Money' calls on Indonesian officials to reduce illegal logging by standing fully behind and strengthening the national Anti-Corruption Commission, better enforcing forestry, anti-corruption, and anti-money laundering laws, and ensuring that funds desperately needed to improve services such as healthcare are collected and allocated for that purpose."--P. Money by Jacob Goldstein Pdf

The co-host of the popular NPR podcast Planet Money provides a well-researched, entertaining, somewhat irreverent look at how money is a made-up thing that has evolved over time to suit humanity's changing needs. Money only works because we all agree to believe in it. In Money, Jacob Goldstein shows how money is a useful fiction that has shaped societies for thousands of years, from the rise of coins in ancient Greece to the first stock market in Amsterdam to the emergence of shadow banking in the 21st century. At the heart of the story are the fringe thinkers and world leaders who reimagined money. Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor, created paper money backed by nothing, centuries before it appeared in the west. John Law, a professional gambler and convicted murderer, brought modern money to France (and destroyed the country's economy). The cypherpunks, a group of radical libertarian computer programmers, paved the way for bitcoin. One thing they all realized: what counts as money (and what doesn't) is the result of choices we make, and those choices have a profound effect on who gets more stuff and who gets less, who gets to take risks when times are good, and who gets screwed when things go bad. Lively, accessible, and full of interesting details (like the 43-pound copper coins that 17th-century Swedes carried strapped to their backs), Money is the story of the choices that gave us money as we know it today.

The Rebel Pirate by Donna Thorland Pdf

“Let Donna Thorland sweep you back to the American Revolution, into a world of spies, suspense, skullduggery, and sex.”—New York Times Bestselling Author William Martin 1775, Boston Harbor. James Sparhawk, Master and Commander in the British Navy, knows trouble when he sees it. The ship he’s boarded is carrying ammunition and gold…into a country on the knife’s edge of war. Sparhawk’s duty is clear: confiscate the cargo, impound the vessel and seize the crew. But when one of the ship’s boys turns out to be a lovely girl, with a loaded pistol and dead-shot aim, Sparhawk finds himself held hostage aboard a Rebel privateer. Sarah Ward never set out to break the law. Before Boston became a powder keg, she was poised to escape the stigma of being a notorious pirate’s daughter by wedding Micah Wild, one of Salem’s most successful merchants. Then a Patriot mob destroyed her fortune and Wild played her false by marrying her best friend and smuggling a chest of Rebel gold aboard her family’s ship. Now branded a pirate herself, Sarah will do what she must to secure her family’s safety and her own future. Even if that means taking part in the cat and mouse game unfolding in Boston Harbor, the desperate naval fight between British and Rebel forces for the materiel of war—and pitting herself against James Sparhawk, the one man she cannot resist. Still Lost by Steve Rogers Pdf

Tom Ryan Jr. is locked up in the Alzheimer’s Unit of Peaceful Harbor Nursing Home. His father, Tom Ryan Sr., died on the 8-by-10-foot Astro Turf in the recreation room of the same nursing home. Sadly, Tom Sr. passed along the Alzheimer’s gene to his son, who also wheels himself to that very same plastic green turf every day, as he goes through the identical transformation his father did. Tom Jr. believes his only lucid thoughts about people, places, and stories are about his life on the golf course. Still Lost is a story filled with sarcasm, yet at the same time it is tragic, dark, and redemptive. It tells of the lonely ride taken by the Alzheimer’s-afflicted narrator. The author wrote this novel as a sequel to Lost in Love Grass, published in 2010. He has also written a trilogy of children’s books: Bogey the Wonder Squirrel, Dogs Can Fly, and The Miracle of Helen the Rabbit.
