Wild Side of the River by Michael Zimmer Pdf

A son sets out to make things right and avenge his father’s death in this dark Western noir. Ethan Wilder has been off in the mountains hunting for the last several months. Upon his return to the family Bar Five Ranch, Wilder finds his life in chaos. His brother, Ben, after taking his father’s rifle without permission, has locked his father in the outhouse to avoid punishment. Another brother, Vic, is in jail, accused of beating up a girl in town, and the last of the Wilder brothers, Joel, is up north in Canada, trying to sell horses to the Mounties. Ethan’s father, Jacob, has a reputation in town for raising hell. In his opinion, no man tamed the wilderness with a timid soul, but the newer citizens of the town have now been pushing for the removal of local farmers and ranchers like the Wilders. Things come to a head when his father joins the ranks of local farmers found dead under suspicious circumstances. Ethan has no choice but to turn to revenge to uphold the family name and ensure that the murderers won’t come for him next. Wild Side of the River reveals the dark side of the wild frontier in this gripping tale and modern Western classic. Farming on the Wild Side by Nancy J. Hayden,John P. Hayden Pdf

One farm’s decades-long journey into regenerative agriculture—and how these methods enhance biodiversity, pollinators, and soil health Northern Vermont’s Nancy and John Hayden have spent the last 25 years transforming their draft horse–powered, organic vegetable and livestock operation into an agroecological, regenerative, biodiverse, organic fruit farm, fruit nursery, and pollinator sanctuary. In Farming on the Wild Side they explain the philosophical and scientific principles that influenced them as they phased out sheep and potatoes and embraced apples, pears, stone fruits, and a wide variety of uncommon berry crops; turned much of their property into a semi-wild state; and adapted their marketing and sales strategies to the new century. As the Haydens pursued their goals of enhancing biodiversity and regenerating their land, they incorporated agroforestry and permaculture principles into perennial fruit polycultures, a pollinator sanctuary, repurposed greenhouses for growing fruit, hügelkultur, and ecological “pest” management. Beyond the practical techniques and tips, this book also inspires readers to develop greater ecological literacy and respect for the mysteries of the global ecosystem. Farming on the Wild Side tells a story about new ways to manage small farms and homesteads, about nurturing land, about ecology, about economics, and about things that we can all do to heal both the land and ourselves.

Wanderings on the Wild Side by Jane Harris Pdf

Wonderful sightings of kingfishers, colourful butterflies, wild deer and beautiful wild flowers inspired me to recount the experiences from years ago. Family and friends' photographs are much appreciated and their company on walks too. Exploring the local countryside in the early nineteen fifties, when I was just eight years old, gave me a love of wild life, flora and fauna, and filled me with wonder, hearing the flock of lapwings calling 'Peewit!', and watching them circling, twisting and turning in the blue skies far above me. In those years children could wander freely, easily surviving the occasional mishap such as falling in the deep part of the stream that flowed across the moors to the River Soar. Sketching and painting also enjoyable activities from early childhood enabled me as a self-taught artist to try and capture the beauty of the landscape, where I walk so often, in my paintings as well as in my diary. However, my family struggling to read my handwritten diaries, (I found it difficult too in places!) encouraged me to typewrite them and this book is the result.

Across the Shaman's River by Daniel Lee Henry Pdf

The story of one of Alaska’s last Indigenous strongholds, shut off for a century until a fateful encounter between a shaman, a preacher, and a naturalist. Tucked in the corner of Southeast Alaska, the Tlingits had successfully warded off the Anglo influences that had swept into other corners of the territory. This Native American tribe was viewed by European and American outsiders as the last wild tribe and a frustrating impediment to access. Missionaries and prospectors alike had widely failed to bring the Tlingit into their power. Yet, when naturalist John Muir arrived in 1879, accompanied by a fiery preacher, it only took a speech about “brotherhood”—and some encouragement from the revered local shaman Skandoo’o—to finally transform these “hostile heathens.” Using Muir’s original journal entries, as well as historic writings of explorers juxtaposed with insights from contemporary tribal descendants, Across the Shaman’s River reveals how Muir’s famous canoe journey changed the course of history and had profound consequences on the region’s Native Americans. “The product of three decades of thought, research, and attentive listening. . . . Henry shines a bright light on events that have long been shadowy, half-known. . . . Now, thanks to careful scholarship and his access to Tlingit oral history, we are given a different perspective on familiar events: we are inside the Tlingit world, looking out at the changes happening all around them.” —Alaska History
