He would make it end on that day, because on that day the expedition under the command of Colonel Wolseley trudged through a heavy rain, ankle-deep in mud, along the river road which is now Main Street and went into the Fort by the northwest gateway less than an hour after Louis Riel and the remnant of his Provisional Government galloped away out of the river gateway and vanished into the rain. But though it is true that the conditions of life as they were then passed away in a few years' time, a great deal of what was most characteristic of the old Red River era continued to blend with the life of Winnipeg for two or three decades after 1870.
