Winter walk in the city. What do I see? One glowing menorah. Two bells on a tree. Take a walk through the city in winter and experience the sights, sounds, colors, and smells of the multitude of different holidays we celebrate this season. From Hanukkah and Christmas to Mawlid al-Nabi and Chinese New Year, everyone has a reason to celebrate. With simple rhymes, a counting pattern, and stunning papercraft art reminiscent of Ezra Jack Keats, this diverse board book is the perfect introduction to the cultural melting pot that makes the city so special.
A boy, his father and their dog have a perfect day in a snowy city, illustrated by Governor General’s Literary Award winner Gary Clement. A young boy wakes up in the early light of a winter morning, pulls on his boots and mittens, and steps out into the snowy city with his dad. They trudge through the snow, their dog bounding along beside them, then a slushy, steamy bus ride takes them to the tobogganing hill for some winter fun. The boy describes all the sights and sounds of the day, from the frost in Dad’s beard and the snow “pillows” in the park, to the noisy clunking snow plows and the singing buskers they pass on their way home. That night, the boy lies awake under cozy covers, reflecting on the day, as snow blankets the world outside his window. This is winter in the city. A Winter Walk Henry David Thoreau New England transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau's 1843 essay "A Winter Walk" is a loving celebration of winter and walking. Thoreau vividly renders the winter season, writing of its sparkling beauty, its purity, and its stillness, and perfectly describing the warmth, coziness, and cheer to be found back at the home hearth. This short work is part of Applewood's "American Roots," series, tactile mementos of American passions by some of America's most famous writers. I wish to thank God in heaven first who spoke to my daughter back in September 2013 and called me up the day after I was singing on TV, “hey dad I think God wants you to write a book he also confirmed this through a well-known book author throughout the world who lived in the same city that I did Anderson Indiana she may still live there today Ruth Shininess said it to me almost word-for-word as my daughter said “Hey Richard, I think God wants you to write a book that really confirm to me that I was supposed to write something. But at that point I really didn’t know what I was supposed to have written but I would find out not too long after that so I’m very grateful to my daughter Megan whom I love with all my heart to haave gotten this started for without God speaking to her there would not be a book and my personal friend Ruth who confirmed it that day. I also thank my good friend Miss Q. who has been a very valuable resource to help get these lifestories over to my publisher, I appreciate her with all my heart. I wish to thank my publisher Xlibris for Jen Heavens and her valuable assistance to me as an author and Patrick Manning for allowing me to stay the course and tell me to keep with it, I appreciate them and all the staff that work there. And I want to thank my friends in Boston my friends at the Southampton shelter where I was a resident there for two and a half years and the many friends I made there and all the staff there including case manager supervisors my former bosses I appreciate everyone there and to other friends in Boston who might sing with and their patient support with me getting this book done.
