The Gaelic Otherworld by John Gregorson Campbell Pdf

This volume contains two works on the Scottish Gaelic tradition -"Superstitions of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland" and "Witchcraft and Second Sight in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland". John Gregorson Campbell (1836-91) was one of a number of folklorists who collected and published the traditions of his native Highlands and Islands during the second half of the 19th century and the first few years of the 20th. He was the only one of the group who specialized in the area of superstitions. Much of the material presented in this work was collected during the 1850s - an early date which happens to be one of the two reasons for its value to us today as a record of genuine tradition. The other guarantee of the authenticity of this picture of the Gaelic otherworld is Campbell's rigorous attitude to truth. He had a legal training and, following the example set by his mentor, Campbell of Islay, he subscribed fully to the scientific demands of the new academic discipline of folklore studies. In addition to his biographical introduction, Ronald Black also provides explanatory endnotes and a new index.

Witchcraft Second Sight in the Highlands Islands of Scotland by John Gregorson Campbell Pdf

Excerpt from Witchcraft Second Sight in the Highlands Islands of Scotland: Tales and Traditions Collected A common answer to the question, What could witches do? Is What could they not do? The classes of actions, however, ascribed to them are not numerous. They could take the milk from their neighbours' cattle, bring fish to their own coasts, make fishermen success ful, go to sea for fish themselves and, bring home creelfuls, raise storms, sink ships, drown those who offended them; give strings to sailors with.knots on them, the Unloosening of which raised the wind; they could go to wine-cellars.in London or Ireland, and drink wine till morning; y through the air with magic quickness, and cross the seas in the most un likely vessels, sieves, eggshells, or dry cowsherds; produce awasting disease in an enemy, ' waylay and endanger the belated traveller, and by their cursed tricks keep a child in its mother's womb past its proper time; suck cows, and assume various shapes. They, could benefit, or at least ward away, evil from a favourite, but their power of doing, 50 seems to have been much 'feebler than their powers of mischief. Folklore of the Scottish Highlands by Anne Ross Pdf

The folklore of the Scottish Highlands is unique and very much alive. Dr Anne Ross is a Gaelic-speaking scholar and archaeologist who has lived and worked in crofting communities. This has enabled her to collect information at first hand and to assess the veracity of material already published. In this substantially revised edition of a classic work first published 30 years ago, she portrays the beliefs and customs of Scottish Gaelic society, including: seasonal customs deriving from Celtic festivals; the famous waulking songs; the Highland tradition of seers and second sight; omens and taboos, both good and bad; and, chilling experiences of witchcraft and the Evil Eye Rituals associated with birth and death. Having taken her MA, MA Hons and PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Anne Ross became Research Fellow in the School of Scottish Studies, Edinburgh. She then rapidly established herself as one of Britain's leading Celtic scholars. Her seminal work is "Pagan Celtic Britain" and she has also published "Druids - Preachers of Immortality" with Tempus Publishing.
