Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... WITH SEVEN GENERALS IN THE BOER WAR. CHAPTER I. SOUTHAMPTON TO CAPE TOWN. It was a quarter past one in the afternoon of Friday, October 13, 1899, when it was decided that I should embark for South Africa upon the following day, as special correspondent of the Times, with Sir Eedvers Buller's Headquarters. The bustle and worry of the next few hours defy description, and, at all events, the chief point is that I succeeded in collecting a reasonably complete kit and in catching the steamer. The departure from Southampton was an experience that is unlikely to fade from the memory of any who witnessed it. The ovation that hailed Sir Eedvers as he went on board was tremendous; but the really dramatic incident was to follow when the Dunottar Castle left her moorings and set off on her voyage. The cheering ceased as if by magic, and the vast multitude of people on the wharfs, far and near, broke into the strains of " God save the Queen." A British crowd may lack the musical refinement of some others, but when the Briton uncovers his head and sings the National Anthem he means what he sings, and his sincerity is so obvious that no room for doubt upon the subject can linger in the minds of any that hear him. It was just 5 p.m. when the ship sailed. The sea was calm, and when the dinner-bugle sounded there were very few who failed to answer the summons. But during the night the wind began to blow, and, by the time we were off Ushant, the steamer had become sufficiently unsteady to compel many to prefer their cabins to the full publicity of the saloon or deck. A good many who ventured to appear at breakfast beat a hasty retreat, and, under the circumstances, it was considered useless to attempt the Church Service. Towards evening the weather...

The Boer War by Fred R. van Hartesveldt Pdf
One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.

The Boer War by Thomas Pakenham Pdf
The war declared by the Boers on 11 October 1899 gave the British, as Kipling said, 'no end of a lesson'. It proved to be the longest, the costliest, the bloodiest and the most humiliating campaign that Britain fought between 1815 and 1914. Thomas Pakenham has written the first full-scale history of the war since 1910. His narrative is based on first-hand and largely unpublished sources ranging from the private papers of the leading protagonists to the recollections of survivors from both sides. Out of this historical gold-mine, the author has constructed a narrative as vivid and fast-moving as a novel, and a history that in scholarship, breadth and impact will endure for many years.
