With the German Armies in the West (Classic Reprint) by Sven Anders Hedin Pdf

Excerpt from With the German Armies in the West Long before my book dealing with my personal recollection from the war theatres of France and Belgium had been translated into English, it was made the subject of a criticism in the "Daily Telegraph" of February 15th. The author, Mr. William Archer, complained that I have not once introduced into my narrative any harsh and condemnatory utterances regarding Germany's conduct of the war. The fact is that I have had no occasion for such utterances. My self-imposed task was, as I have repeatedly made clear, merely to describe what I saw with my own eyes and as much as possible to refrain from citing the experience of others. During the two months that I spent on the German western front, I did not see a single instance of cruelty to prisoners or wounded, let alone ill-treatment of the civil population and its goods and chattels. The Germans maintained the same incorruptibly severe and just discipline that existed, according to the testimony of history, in the Swedish armies which Gustavus Adolphus and Charles XII. led to victory during the epic period of my own country. But even in peace time not a day passes but that crime is committed even in the most civilised countries. How, then, can one expect that it shall disappear in a war? I therefore by no means deny that there have been isolated instances of offences and cruelty in an army of several million men. But I have not seen them and need not therefore embark upon the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The German Army in War (Classic Reprint) by Andrew Hilliard Atteridge Pdf

Excerpt from The German Army in War I have endeavoured to make the book a collection of facts, with only so much discussion of them as is necessary to make them clear to the reader, avoiding as far as possible any attempt at criticism. But the mere statement of these facts is enough to Show that the German army is a very formidable fighting organisation. And I think it is well that this should be understood. It is a mistake to underrate an Opponent. The Germans made this mistake with regard to our own gallant army. Some writers here at home appear to me to have been as much at fault in their estimates of the German army at the outset of the war. The German War Book by John Hartman Morgan Pdf

Excerpt from The German War Book: Being "the Usages of War on Land" Issued by the Great General Staff of the German Army; Translated With a Critical Introduction Our war-book is more discreet but not more merciful. Private property, it begins by saying, Should always be respected. To take a man's property when he is present is robbery when he is absent it is downright burglary. But if the necessity Of war makes it advisable, every sequestration, every appropriation, temporary or permanent, every use, every injury and all destruction are permissible. Excerpt from The German Army: Department of Military Art, the Army Service Schools It is not necessary to pass judgment on the moral question of the present use of the German weapon - its army. Our only interest is the weapon itself. A pistol may be used in a cause that is moral ly right or morally wrong. The quality of the pistol is the same in either case. Breakout and Pursuit (Classic Reprint) by Martin Blumenson Pdf

Excerpt from Breakout and Pursuit The campaign in the summer of 1944 related in this volume included some of the most spectacular ground action of the u.s. Army during World War II. It began with the slow and costly hedgerow fighting against deter mined German efforts to contain the Normandy beachhead; it entered its decisive stage when the breach of German defenses permitted full exploita tion of the power and mobility of u.s. Army ground tr00ps; and it reached the peak of brilliance with successive envelopments of principal German forces and the pursuit of their remnants north and east to free most of France, part of Belgium, and portions of the Netherlands. By late August the war in the west appeared to be almost over, but the tyranny of logistics gave the enemy time to rally at the fortified West \vall and delay surrender for another eight months. In the European Theater subseries the backdrop for this volume is Cross Channel Attack, which carries the story to 1 July. Breakout and Pursuit follows the u.s. First Army through 10 September (where The Siegfried Line Campaign picks up the narrative), and the u.s. Third Army through 31 August (where The Lorraine Campaign begins). The logistical factors that played so large a part in governing the pace and extent of combat operations are described in much greater detail in Volume I of Logistical Support of the Armies. The tremendous scope of this campaign, and its partially improvised character, have left a heritage of controversies to which no final answers can be given. The author has had free access to the records and to many of the leading players in the drama, and his account should have wide appeal to the general reader as well as to the serious military student of grand tactics. The Germans on the Somme (Classic Reprint) by Philip Gibbs Pdf

Excerpt from The Germans on the Somme But the months passed, and Verdun still held out above piles of German corpses on its slopes, . And in June Germany looked East and saw a great menace. The Russian offensive was becoming violent. German generals on the Russian fronts sent desperate messages for help. Send us more men they said and from the Western front four divisions containing 39 battalions were sent to them. They must have been sent grudgingly, for now another menace threatened the enemy, and it was on the Western side. The British Armies were getting ready to strike. In spite of Verdun, France still had men enough - withdrawn from a part of the line in which they had been relieved by the British - to co-operate in a new attack. It was our offensive that the German Command feared most, for they had no exact knowledge of our strength or of the quality of our new troops. They knew that our Army had grown prodigiously since the assault on Loos, ' nearly a year before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Defeat in the West by Milton Shulman Pdf

THE STORY OF THE COLLAPSE OF THE GERMAN ARMIES IN THE WEST AND A STUDY OF THE HISTORY OF WORLD WAR II, AS TOLD FROM THE GERMAN POINT OF VIEW In 1945, the once mighty Wehrmacht was reduced to a pathetic shadow of its former self as the thousand-year Reich lay in ruins. The war in the West had been lost and its protagonists scattered in prisoner of war camps across Europe. Author Milton Shulman joined the Canadian Army HQ three months before D-Day as a major and was promoted to intelligence officer by war's end. As part of his duties, he made close personal contact with the German Army throughout intelligence operations in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. While still in uniform, he also interviewed many of the captured German generals in the following months and years, including Gerd von Rundstedt, ‘Sepp’ Dietrich and Kurt Meyer—26 in all. From them, Major Shulman learnt why it was that such a superbly armed body of fighting men suffered such a calamitous defeat. This absorbing book is the result of those interviews. First published in 1947, it was the first account to reveal the truth of what happened in the war: how Hitler and his General Staff planned their campaigns, how the discipline and ignorance of the German military machine served Hitler well and Germany badly—and why victory finally slipped from their hands. “The best and most vivid account of the German collapse”—Hugh Trevor Roper, The Sunday Times

What Germany Thinks by Thomas F. A. Smith Pdf

Excerpt from What Germany Thinks: The War as Germans See It It is true that the conflict between Austria and Serbia forms the starting point. Whether or not Serbia was seriously in the wrong is a matter of opinion, but it is generally held that Austria dealt with her neighbour with too much heat and too little discretion. Austria kindled the flames of war, but it was Germany's mission to seize a blazing torch and set Europe alight. Ypres, 1914, an Official Account Published by Order of the German General Staff (Classic Reprint) by Otto Schwink Pdf

Excerpt from Ypres, 1914, an Official Account Published by Order of the German General Staff The German book of which a translation is here given was written in the autumn of 1917 by Captain Otto Schwink, a General Staff Officer, by order of the Chief of the General Staff of the Field Army, and is stated to be founded on official documents. It forms one of a series of monographs, partly projected, partly published, on the various phases of the war, but is the only one that is available dealing with operations in which the British Army was engaged. Several concerned with the Eastern theatre of war have already appeared, and one other entitled 'Liege-Namur, ' relating to the Western. Field-Marshal Viscount French, in his book '1914, ' has said that the period 27th to 31st October during the first battle of Ypres was 'more momentous and fateful than any other which I directed during my period of service as Commander-in-Chief in the field. 31st October and 1st November will remain for ever memorable in the history of our country, for during those two days no more than a thin and straggling line of tired-out British soldiers stood between the Empire and its practical ruin as an independent first-class Power.' The German account accentuates the truth of Lord French's appreciation of the great peril in which the Army and the Nation stood.
