With the Royal Army Medical Corps (R. A. M. C.) at the Front (Classic Reprint) by Evelyn Charles Vivian Pdf

Excerpt from With the Royal Army Medical Corps (R. A. M. C.) At the Front TO the average British civilian, the British Army, either in peace or war, is one whole organisation; one soldier is exactly like another soldier to the man in the street, for the volunteer system of service, peculiar to British rule as far as European civilisation is concerned, hasset the Army quite apart from civilian life and ways of thought. To-day, with the fate of civilisation itself hanging on the doings of armies, there are men in Britain who do not know the difference between a squad and a squadron, between a' combatant and a non-combatant unit. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X War's Effects A Gunner of the Field Artillery, who was wounded at Mons, gives an idea of the way in which men were tended even in the hurry and confusion of the first days of war. Wounded by shell-fire, this man crawled for over a quarter of a mile under fire, and was then picked up by an ambulance wagon, where he stayed for two days. His next stage was a motor lorry, in which he remained for four days, and thence he was transferred to a field hospital, where for a time it was thought that he would not recover. In the end, however, he was able to be transported home, and made satisfactory recovery, though he will not go back to France to fight again. He counts among the permanent effects of war, though of actual fighting he saw but very little. p 169 One of the worst effects, when positions have to be held, is the number of bodies of horses that cannot be buried at once. Along the position of the Aisne the bodies of whole teams of horses lay piled up, struck down by shell-fire and left to rot. The British troops did their best in cases of this kind, but it was impossible to bury all the carcases, and thus the work of the sanitary section of the R. A. M. C. was rendered doubly hard, for in those decomposing carcases was danger of infection to the troops for miles round. A curious point in the earlier engagements was that nearly all the wounded who returned had been hit in the legs or feet. This was accounted for by the fact that, on the retreat, there was no chance for digging trenches, as was done later in positions that were held for some time, and the dropping shell-fire from the German guns fell behind such cover as the men selected for their positions on to their legs and feet. It is an old rule with regard to "taking...

An Equal Burden by Jessica Meyer Pdf

An Equal Burden is the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Though they were not professional medical caregivers, they were called upon to provide urgent medical care and, as non-combatants, were forbidden from carrying weapons. Their role in the war effort was quite unique and warranting of further study. Structured both chronologically and thematically, An Equal Burden examines the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military, and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, Meyer argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men's work in wartime.

Medicine My Vocation, Fishing My Recreation: Memoirs Of A Physician And Flyfisherman by Gilbert R Thompson Pdf

This book is about the author's life motivated by two pursuits: medicine, his profession and flyfishing, his favourite recreation. Each in their own way has provided him with challenges, enjoyment and fulfilment. The book recounts the author's experiences as a wartime school boy, post-war medical student, army doctor in Ghana, and medical research worker at Hammersmith Hospital, London, the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, the Methodist Hospital, Houston and McGill University, Montreal. It describes his drastic change in mid-career from gastroenterology to clinical lipidology and his subsequent efforts to promote the lipid hypothesis of atherosclerosis in the face of entrenched opposition from some members of the cardiological establishment. Among his achievements was the introduction of plasmapheresis to prolong the lives of severely affected patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a hitherto fatal disorder, and he was among the first to describe the efficacy of statins in FH patients in the UK. The book also describes his leisure time activities including running in the London and New York marathons, and the hazards thereof, and his flyfishing expeditions to catch Atlantic salmon in Scotland and Russia, bonefish in the Bahamas and brown trout in England. The narrative covers the period from the Second World War to the present day, during which there have been dramatic changes in medical practice and social attitudes. It reflects the author's experiences during the latter half of the 20th century, stretching from the early days of penicillin to the introduction of statins, and it concludes with his up to date appraisal of recent and exciting advances in cholesterol-lowering therapy for cardiovascular disease.

Faithful in Adversity by John Broom Pdf

The Royal Army Medical Corps was present during all engagements in the Second World War. From the frozen wastes of Norway through to liberation from the death camps of Germany and the Far East, RAMC personnel were frequently close to the front line, risking their lives to provide medical support to a mobile army in a mechanised war. Nearly 3,000 army medics were killed during the war as a result of enemy action and exposing themselves to dangerous tropical diseases. Using much previously unpublished material from public and private family archives, this book charts the story of those who remained true to the motto of the RAMC: Faithful in Adversity.
