WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN NIGERIA by Adeola Babatunde Pdf

Nigerian women are undeniably Nigerians. The status bestow on them, rights and privileges enjoyed by other Nigerians. More so, statistics reveals that they constitute 69,086,302 of Nigeria's 140,431,790 population. This book examines the enforcement of women's rights as human rights in Nigeria. In doing this, it considers customs, constitution, laws, policies, courts' decisions as the court is the last hope of the common man and the place of obligations-imposing international and regional treaties ratified by Nigeria. Also it examines the difficulty of proper balancing of ideals like repressive customs versus societal standards, judicial activism versus Separation of Powers, inadequacy of laws versus non exhaustiveness of laws, international versus local laws supremacy.

International Human Rights by Eleazar Echezonachi Otiocha Pdf

The recognition of women and female rights as a different concept in international law has fully been accepted in modern nation states. The fight for the protection and advancement of women and female rights as an international human right has been an on going work. Women and female children all over the world have always enjoyed lesser rights when compared with men and boys in every society whether primitive, developing or developed societies. Many governments all over the world have enacted laws and regulations to promote and protect the rights of women and female children. A lot of laws have been put in theory to give women equality with men. In reality or practice, many women and female children all over the world still find it difficult to realize their rights. This book acknowledges that in theory many African states have tried to change the statue books to accord women and female child some level of equality with men and boys but at the same time a look at the practice of the law in many African states shows a different pattern. There is a big disconnect between women's theoretical rights and the reality or practice of the theory. The objective of this book is to look at how far the law in print on the rights of women and female child has become the law in practice/reality in Africa. Rev. Dr. Eleazar E. Otiocha obtained both his master's (LLM) and doctorate (SJD) degrees in International Legal Studies from Golden Gate University, School of Law, San Francisco, California, after obtaining LLB and BL with Honors degrees from University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus and Nigerian Law School respectively. He has master's degree (M.Div.) in Divinity from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, California and is a licensed Clergy and Minister in Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) and Anglican Communion Nigeria. Rev. Dr. Otiocha is a licensed lawyer, clergy and teacher. His research interests include Public international law, International Human rights, Human Rights in developing countries, Women and law, Religion and law.

State party reporting and the realisation of children’s rights in Africa by Remember Miamingi Pdf

About the publication Human rights norms will largely remain hollow if they are not translated into the lived realities of people on the ground. Given the diversity and complexities of human rights norms, the arrays of institutions, mechanisms and resource required to give full effect to these norms, implementation of human rights norms is a continuous and progressive undertaking. Progress, to be meaningful, should have milestones and mechanisms for tracking it. The reporting mechanisms are human rights’ monitoring and evaluation plans and systems to track progressive implementation. This book provides an assessment of the reporting mechanisms of child rights treaty bodies. It highlights what is working or not working and why, making recommendations for further improvement of the reporting mechanism to better work for children in Africa. The findings and recommendations in the book are based on a study commissioned by the Centre for Human Rights, to assess the effects of reporting to United Nations and African Union child rights treaty bodies on the enjoyment of rights, protection and welfare of children in Africa. It covers 17 African countries, and provides a historical snapshot of the situation as at the end of 2017.

The Human Rights Council by Damian Etone Pdf

This book examines the engagement of African states with the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism. This human rights mechanism is known for its pacific and non-confrontational approach to monitoring state human rights implementation. Coming at the end of the first three cycles of the UPR, the work offers a detailed analysis of the effectiveness of African states’ engagement and its potential impact. It develops a framework which comprehensively evaluates aspects of states’ UPR engagement, such as the pre-review national consultation process and implementation of UPR recommendations which, until recently, have received little attention. The book considers the potential for acculturation in engagement with the UPR and unpacks the impact of politics, regionalism, cultural relativism, rights ritualism and civil society. The work provides a useful guide for policymakers and international human rights law practitioners, as well as a valuable resource for international legal and international relations academics and researchers.

CHILD MARRIAGE IN NIGERIA:THE HEALTH HAZARDS AND SOCIO-LEGAL IMPLICATIONS by Armstrong Ukwuoma Pdf

This book informs that the practice of child marriage is harmful and inimical to the health, education, social wellbeing, socio-economic empowerment, and the fundamental rights of the child. It shows the conflicts between the practice and the public policy commitments and efforts of the government of Nigeria on the right to health, education, human/fundamental rights, the MDGs, the Nigeria Vision 20:2020, the goals of NEPAD and the transformation of Nigeria. It exposes the unsustainable arguments seeking to justify child marriage. This book calls on all individuals, legal persons, state and non-state actors and development partners including YOU to join and support the advocacy to end child marriage in Nigeria. For those who are yet to appreciate the girl-child as a person of great value like the male counterpart, this book is here to change such orientation.
