This is the first specialised volume with a holistic approach dealing with the most vulnerable and neglected section of workers in unorganised sector of agriculture. A profound shift is occurring among women working in agriculture—they are increasingly seeing themselves as farmers, not only as the wives or daughters of farmers. To address the goal 5 (Gender Equality) of Sustainable Development, it is deemed vital that we first understand the gender inequalities and the contribution of the second gender, i.e. women. To make this dream come true, rural women need to be educated, malnutrition in rural areas; especially among women, needs to be removed, they will have to be technologically empowered, and rural women need to break the shackles of traditional hiccups and be aware of the latest information related to government programmes and schemes along with legal literacy concerning them to be able to understand the various provisions made available by the government for them and to enable them to enforce the same. This book encapsulated all the required dimensions of rural women empowerment: education, health & nutrition, technological empowerment, political empowerment instruments like the Panchayati Raj system, economic empowerment through entrepreneurship, etc. It covers the health challenges of women labourers, hill women, drudgery issues of brick layering women, women and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and constriants to women's empowerment. This paper starts from the perspective of the international debate on Women in Development of the Seventies and focuses on a specific instance of this issue, that is, the implications of rural development for women in Ghana. The author examines the position of women in traditional societies with regard to their access to the means of productions and the changes brought about by the commoditization of the economy and the incorporation of such groups in the national society. The analysis points out that the process of "development" has negatively influenced women's opportunities for economic improvement and self-determination, and terminates with a recent example of the impact of planned "development" on women as small-scale farmers.
