Women in the Third World by Lynne Brydon Pdf

Women in the Third World provides an up-to-date general account and review of research on the roles and status of women in contemporary Third World societies. The book focuses on four major themes of underdevelopment which have particular relevance for gender roles and relations: the household, production, reproduction and policy. These issues are illustrated with material from rural and urban areas in all parts of the Third World. The book summarizes significant ideas and findings. Lynne Brydon and Sylvia Chang have avoided a narrow focus on particular regions and countries to provide a synoptic overview. In addition to being a valuable source of reference for scholars interested in gender and development in the Third World, the book also attempts to pinpoint fundamental aspects of gender inequality which apply to women everywhere. The overriding conclusion of the book is that women's experiences of development are generally negative and that intervention is urgently required to prevent their positions relative to men's deteriorating still further.

The Status of Women in the Muslim World by Shamim Aleem Pdf

Gender Equality is at the heart of human rights and United Nations values. The U.N. Charter (1945) adopted the principle of “equal rights for men and women”. But in spite of this universal declaration women’s secondary status and oppression persist. There is no country in the world where women enjoy equal status of men. There are 54 countries with Muslim majority in the world, many of them are in the race for gender equality, but many are lagging behind, in spite of the fact that the Quran has given equal rights to women. The Author has tried to peep into the system to see the status of women and to identify the hurdles in the way of progress. This is just a modest attempt, the subject is very comprehensive. She looks forward to the governments and scholars to work out a feasible model of the family and the role of women in the light of the Quran and Sunnah. The prosperity and the happiness of the Family depends on the fair relationship between husband and wife, which in turn contributes to the peace and prosperity of the world at large.

Women's Socioeconomic Status and Religious Leadership in Asia Minor in the First Two Centuries C.E. by Katherine Bain Pdf

Rethinking the socioeconomic status of women in the Roman world. Moving beyond discussions of patriarchy and prescribed "women's roles" in the Roman world - discussions that have relied too much on elite literary sources, in her view - Katherine Bain explores what inscriptional data from Asia Minor can tell us about the actual socioeconomic status of women in the first and second centuries C.E. Her findings suggest that women's leadership in social associations - and by implication in Jewish and Christian congregations as well - was even more frequent than has been imagined. -- Book Cover.

Destined for Equality by Robert Max Jackson Pdf

Men and women remain unequal in the United States, but in this provocative book, Robert Max Jackson demonstrates that gender inequality is irrevocably crumbling. Destined for Equality, the first integrated analysis of gender inequality's modern decline, tells the story of that progressive movement toward equality over the past two centuries in America, showing that women's status has risen consistently and continuously. Jackson asserts that women's rising status has been due largely to the emergence of modern political and economic organizations, which have transformed institutional priorities concerning gender. Although individual politicians and businessmen generally believed women should remain in their traditional roles, Jackson shows that it was simply not in the interests of modern enterprise and government to foster inequality. The search for profits, votes, organizational rationality, and stability all favored a gender-neutral approach that improved women's status. The inherent gender impartiality of organizational interests won out over the prejudiced preferences of the men who ran them. As economic power migrated into large-scale organizations inherently indifferent to gender distinctions, the patriarchal model lost its social and cultural sway, and women's continual efforts to rise in the world became steadily more successful. Total gender equality will eventually prevail; the only questions remaining are what it will look like, and how and when it will arrive.

The Importance of Women's Status for Child Nutrition in Developing Countries by Lisa C. Smith Pdf

Until recently the role of women's social status in determining their children's nutritional health went largely unnoticed. That is, until researchers began to ponder the Asian Enigma- the question of why malnutrition is much more prevalent among children in South Asia than in Sub-Saharan Africa, even though South Asia surpasses Sub-Saharan Africa in most of the principal determinants of child nutrition. This report uses data from 36 countries in three developing regions to establish empirically that women's status, defined as women's power relative to men's, is an important determinant of children's nutritional status. It finds that the pathways through which status influences child nutrition and the strength of that influence differ considerably from one region to another. Where women's status is low, this research proves unequivocally that policies to eradicate gender discrimination not only benefit women but also their children.

Toward a Model of Women's Status by Frances E. Mascia-Lees Pdf

Many difficulties have been encountered by researchers attempting to assess women's status in contemporary societies. One major obstacle has to do with the problems encountered in developing indices of status that can be used as objective measures of women's position. Due to such obstacles, many, if not most, studies of women's status have concentrated on qualitative analyses of single cultures or culture areas, making comparisons across societies unsystematic and, therefore, of limited applicability. Yet it is just such systematic studies that are required if the conditions per- petuating women's status around the world are to be identified and changed. This work presents a first attempt to develop measures of woemen's status, using existing statistics, that are applicable across nations and make possible comparisons in time and space. This vilume reviews the literature on the determinants of women's status in con- temporary societies, analyzes the range of variation in women's position in the public sector, provides quantitative measures of women's status in the political, economic, edicational, and family spheres, and identifies factors important in explaining and predicting women's position on a world wide scale.
