Historical Earthquake-Resistant Timber Frames in the Mediterranean Area by Nicola Ruggieri,Gennaro Tampone,Raffaele Zinno Pdf

This book presents a selection of the best papers from the HEaRT 2013 conference, held in Cosenza, Italy, which provided a valuable forum for engineers and architects, researchers and educators to exchange views and findings concerning the technological history, construction features and seismic behavior of historical timber-framed walls in the Mediterranean countries. The topics covered are wide ranging and include historical aspects and examples of the use of timber-framed construction systems in response to earthquakes, such as the gaiola system in Portugal and the Bourbon system in southern Italy; interpretation of the response of timber-framed walls to seismic actions based on calculations and experimental tests; assessment of the effectiveness of repair and strengthening techniques, e.g., using aramid fiber wires or sheets; and modelling analyses. In addition, on the basis of case studies, a methodology is presented that is applicable to diagnosis, strengthening and improvement of seismic performance and is compatible with modern theoretical principles and conservation criteria. It is hoped that, by contributing to the knowledge of this construction technique, the book will help to promote conservation of this important component of Europe’s architectural heritage.

Earthquake Engineering of Timber Structures by Masamitsu Ohta,Motoi Yasumura,Takafumi Nakagawa Pdf

In recent decades several major earthquakes have caused serious damage to wooden houses, highlighting the need for earthquake-proofing of timber structures. Existing design concepts are mainly based on the static considerations of shear-resistant walls or frames of timber structures, and thus cannot predict the behavior of severely damaged structures. Meanwhile, timber structure research has employed response analyses, large-scale tests and shaking tables, which have considerable increased understanding of the behavior of wooden houses during earthquakes. Applying this knowledge and new analytical tools based on the discrete elements method, the Japanese Building Research Institute has developed the Wallstat collapse analysis software for damage assessment and prediction of the likelihood of whole building collapse during seismic motion. Researchers and engineers who specialize in timber structures can now more readily generate their own research results. This book outlines the seismic behaviour and seismic performance requirement of timber structures and explains the concept of basic earthquake-proof design, and it provides background to the collapse analysis of timber structures by seismic loading, and explains the Wallstat software along with several worked examples. The "Wallstat" executable program and its brief manual, in English, can be downloaded at www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781482206319

Timber Engineering by Sven Thelandersson,Hans J. Larsen Pdf

Timber construction is one of the most prevalent methods of constructing buildings in North America and an increasingly significant method of construction in Europe and the rest of the world. Timber Engineering deals not only with the structural aspects of timber construction, structural components, joints and systems based on solid timber and engineered wood products, but also material behaviour and properties on a wood element level. Produced by internationally renowned experts in the field, this book represents the state of the art in research on the understanding of the material behaviour of solid wood and engineered wood products. There is no comparable compendium currently available on the topic - the subjects represented include the most recent phenomena of timber engineering and the newest development of practice-related research. Grouped into three different sections, 'Basic properties of wood-based structural elements', 'Design aspects on timber structures' and 'Joints and structural assemblies', this book focuses on key issues in the understanding of: timber as a modern engineered construction material with controlled and documented properties the background for design of structural systems based on timber and engineered wood products the background for structural design of joints in structural timber systems Furthermore, this invaluable book contains advanced teaching material for all technical schools and universities involved in timber engineering. It also provides an essential resource for timber engineering students and researchers, as well as practicing structural and civil engineers.
