American Working Terriers by Patrick Burns Pdf

Practical, common sense, terrier work for the beginner, laid out in a clear no-nonsense style with chapters on the history of working terriers in Europe and America, along with sections on introducing young dogs to work, tools, technique, American terrier quarry, hazards, and veterinary care for working dogs. The sections on veterinary care and tools alone will save most people more money than the cost of this book, while the tips on digging, locator collars, skunk toxic shock, and handling quarry at the end of a dig, may save you more than money. This is a book on working terriers, but if you show, breed or judge any type of working terrier you need to read chapters one, two and four, not only to understand the true history of working terriers in Great Britain and the United States, but also to understand why (and how) show judges have selected for linked structural characteristics that have resulted in breed after breed disappearing from the working field. 270 pages, with 80 photos and illustrations.

Working Terriers - Their Management, Training and Work, Etc. (History of Hunting Series -Terrier Dogs) by J. C. Bristow-Noble Pdf

This is one of the few early 20th century dog books to deal solely with the true `Working Terrier'. Now very scarce and much sought after in its original limited edition, it has been reprinted by Read Country Books in a high quality hard back format. Written by an expert in both breeding and working terriers, the book is packed with practical advice, and includes many original photographs of terriers in action against a variety of quarry. J.C. Bristow-Noble was well known in his time as a breeder of top quality sporting terriers. He spent many years experimenting with cross-breeding Fox terriers and Sealyhams with other dog breeds and occasionally with famous mongrel terriers, before finally concentrating on Jack Russell terriers, always keeping the description of Russell's famous "Trump" in his mind's eye. His ideal sporting terrier for entering to badger, fox and other quarry was a thick-set 14 pound (lb), hard/dense coated dog with a muzzle of moderate length and an even and fairly thick jaw bone. This rule of thumb eventually led to him owning a kennel of working dogs second to none and well-known throughout the country. His terriers were regularly sold for sums in excess of 50.00 - an enormous sum of money in the early 1900s. His stud dogs were also much in demand even at his minimum stud fee of 10 guineas.

The Terriers of England and Wales by Bryan Cummins Pdf

The Terriers of England and Wales is a companion volume to the author’s The Terriers of Scotland and Ireland (2003). It is more concerned with the working and companion qualities of the various English and Welsh breeds and with their origins than with show dogs and grooming. Cummins delves deeply into the history of the indigenous terriers of England and Wales (including some breeds that are no longer with us and others that are not yet recognized by national kennel clubs) to determine what they once were and what they are today. From the diminutive Yorkie to the majestic Airedale, the author explores similarities and differences of the gallant breeds that make up the English and Welsh terriers. With this information, prospective owners can make informed choices when choosing a canine companion while breeders have the knowledge needed to develop an improved breeding program. After reading The Terriers of England and Wales both owner and breeder will have a new appreciation for these finest of dogs.

Lakeland Terrier by Patricia Peters Pdf

This Comprehensive Owner's Guide to the Lakeland Terrier serves as a complete introduction to this unique British terrier breed known for its prowess at seeking both quarry and comedy. The Lakey, as the breed is affectionately known, is a free-thinking little devil, smaller than most of the other long-legged terriers and more easygoing. The Lakeland Terrier, named for the Lake District in Britain, is unspoiled compared to many of his more popular earthdog brethren, and yet he is equally as bold, daring, and fearless as the larger Airedale, Irish, and Welsh Terriers.Written by Patricia Peters, well-known dog illustrator and Lakeland Terrier breeder of the famed Kilfel Kennels, this "Special Limited Edition" offers an opening chapter on the history of the breed, from its beginnings in the Lake District to its coming to the United States in the 1920s. The chapters on characteristics and the breed standard encapsulate all of the virtues and potential drawbacks of this cocky, little terrier breed, offering sound advice about which owners are best suited to handle the cunning "con artist" and clown of the Terrier Group.Potential owners will welcome the chapter on finding a breeder and selecting a health, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with handsome adults and puppies bursting with intelligence and mischief! In all, there are over 135 photographs in this compact, useful, and entertaining volume. The author's advice on obedience training the Lakeland Terrier, a bright and industrious breed that can pose a challenge to novice owners, will help readers better mold and train their dogs into the well-behaved canine citizens. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, parasites, infectious diseases, and more. A chapter on senior dog care gives readers insight into what's required to care for these long-lived terriers once they reach their golden years. A chapter on competing with the Lakeland Terrier in dog shows and various trials sponsored by the American Kennel Club gives owners a glimpse into the many possibilities of participating with their Lakeys in the dog sport. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as specialty shows, dental care, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, and parasite control.
