Select Memoirs of the English and Scottish Divines by Thomas Smith Pdf

Thomas Smith has written a tour de force biography of English and Scottish Divines from the Reformation and Puritan era. The work begins with the lives of renowned English Worthies who introduced and effected the glorious Reformation from popery, and concludes with those who were unsatisfied with the Romish peculiarities of the Church of England, and were therefore denominated Non-conformists or Puritans. There are contained in this volume 132 entries of varying length which treat each of these worthies and divines with the utmost respect for their work and labors for the Lord Jesus Christ. And it should be noted that with many of them they glorified God in their death as martyrs. Here you will meet the Puritans in their context of struggle and truth for the sake of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Also included are two introductory sections: “An Historical Sketch of the Christian Church” in three parts, and a "Short Introduction to the Lives of the Puritans." This is a major historical work, both for scope and accuracy. Among the noted entries are: Ames, Baille, Baxter, Bolton, Bradford, the Burgess' (both Anthony and Cornelius), Case, Cawdrey, Coverdale, Cotton, Fox, Gillespie, Goodman, Goodwin, Henderson, Hooker, Hooper, Janeway, Latimer, Lightfoot, Ridley, Rogers, Rutherford, Sibbes, Tyndale, Vines, and a host of others. For the Christian and student of the historical and doctrinal struggle for Reformation, there is also a convenient and helpful list of books and works by each author covered appended to the end of each memoir. “This is the best biography on the Puritans that I have ever read, or for that matter, the best biography I’ve ever read, period.” Therese B. McMahon

Worldly Saints by Leland Ryken Pdf

"Ryken's Worldly Saints offers a fine introduction to seventeenth-century Puritanism in its English and American contexts. The work is rich in quotations from Puritan worthies and is ideally suited to general readers who have not delved widely into Puritan literature. It will also be a source of information and inspiration to those who seek a clearer understanding of the Puritan roots of American Christianity." -Harry Stout, Yale University "...the typical Puritans were not wild men, fierce and freaky, religious fanatics and social extremists, but sober, conscientious, and cultured citizens, persons of principle, determined and disciplined excelling in the domestic virtues, and with no obvious shortcomings save a tendency to run to words when saying anything important, whether to God or to a man. At last the record has been put straight." -J.I. Packer, Regent College "Worldly Saints provides a revealing treasury of primary and secondary evidence for understanding the Puritans, who they were, what they believed, and how they acted. This is a book of value and interest for scholars and students, clergy and laity alike." -Roland Mushat Frye, University of Pennsylvania "A very persuasive...most interesting book...stuffed with quotations from Puritan sources, almost to the point of making it a mini-anthology." -Publishers Weekly "With Worldly Saints, Christians of all persuasions have a tool that provides ready access to the vast treasures of Puritan thought." -Christianity Today "Ryken writes with a vigor and enthusiasm that makes delightful reading-never a dull moment." -Fides et Historia "Worldly Saints provides a valuable picture of Puritan life and values. It should be useful for general readers as well as for students of history and literature." -Christianity and Literature

The Puritan Literary Tradition by Johanna Harris,Alison Searle Pdf

What is meant by the Puritan literary tradition, and when did the idea of Puritan literature, as distinct from Puritan beliefs and practices, come into being? The answer is not straightforward. This volume addresses these questions by bringing together new research on a wide range of established and emerging literary subjects that help to articulate the Puritan literary tradition, including: political polemic and the performing arts; conversion and New-World narratives; individual and corporate life-writings; histories of exile and womens history; book history and the translation and circulation of Puritan literature abroad; Puritan epistolary networks; discourses of Puritan friendship; the historiography of Puritanism defined through editing and publishing; doctrinal controversy; and the history of emotions. This essay collection proposes that a Puritan literary tradition existed that was distinct from broader conceptions of early modern English and Protestant traditions and offers a nuanced account of the distinct and variegated contribution that Puritanism has made to the construction of literature as a concept in English. It ranges from the late sixteenth through to the nineteenth century, and spans British, European, and American Puritan cultures. It offers new analyses of well-known Puritan writers such as Anne Bradstreet, John Bunyan, Richard Baxter, and John Milton, as well as less familiar figures, such as Mary Rowlandson and Joseph Hussey, and writers less often associated with Puritanism, such as Andrew Marvell and Aphra Behn.
