Wounded Falcons by Jairo Buitrago Pdf

A story about the heart-opening effect that taking care of a wounded creature has on a wounded boy, from acclaimed picture-book creators Jairo Buitrago and Rafael Yockteng. Adrián is always in trouble, at school and at home, while Santiago gets along quite well. But they are friends. When Adrián finds a wounded bird in an abandoned lot in the midst of the city, things begin to change. Taking care of the bird, learning all about it, discovering that it is a falcon, loving it — and accepting what this love means — gives Adrián a chance to show others a glimpse of who he truly is. Santiago has always known that Adrián has a big heart, and his steadfast friendship is also the reason Adrián has a chance to heal. The Art of Falconry, by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen by Frederick II (Holy Roman Emperor),Casey Albert Wood,Florence Marjorie Fyfe Pdf

De Arte Venandi cum Avibus was written shortly before the year 1250 by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Sicily and Jerusalem, in whose court, with its remarkably cosmopolitan and highly intellectual life, may be found the real beginning of the Italian Renaissance. In spite of its title, it is far more than a dissertation on hunting. There is a lengthy introduction dealing with the anatomy of birds, an intensely interesting description of avian habits, and the excursions of migratory birds. Indeed, this ancient book has long been recognized as the first zoological treatise written in the critical spirit of modern science. The sumptuous volume now in hand is, however, the first translation into English of the complete text, originally divided into a prologue and size books. Together, the translators and editors, have at last made available this classic work and have adorned it with notes, comments, bibliographies, and glossary. They have produced a work of great value to zoologists--especially the ornithologist--and also to everyone interested in the history of science and in medieval art and letters.

Disputatio 5: Medieval Forms of Argument: Disputation and Debate by Georgiana Donavin,Carol Poster,Richard Utz Pdf

These studies illustrate the various high and late medieval transformations of formal and formalized argument, from a broadly interdisciplinary perspective. They challenge today's dominant disciplinary approaches to what was and is still a pervasive mode of thought in the West. Many current treatments of medieval disputational texts have a narrow focus either on the history of scholasticism, rhetoric, and pedagogy, or the genesis and function of such period-specific forms of academic altercation as demonstrative, dialectic, or sophistic disputation, or the later quaestiones, quodlibeta, and sophismata. Moreover, scholarship in literature often ignores the parallel structures of academic argument and narrowly focuses on the narrative and aesthetic functions of debate poem.

White Falcon by Elliott Arnold Pdf

This book tells the true story of a frontier boy, John Tanner, who became the courageous leader of the Chippewa Indians and played an important part in the struggle for control of the fur trade in Northwest. Captured by two Ojibwa Indians as a child in 1789 from present-day Kentucky and carried north into the Michigan Territory, John Tanner was allowed to live but was badly mistreated; although a capable, adaptive boy, the more he tried to be Indian the more he was rejected for being white. Then, two years later, Netnokwa, retiring chieftess of the tribe, adopted him and took him with her to live with the Chippewas. Life became socially easier and John’s natural abilities made him a leader. Rivalries ensued, both personal ones and those of the fur trading companies, but ultimately John makes his name in helping Selkirk with the Red River settlement. A gripping read.

Wounded Warriors by ROBERT C. VALLIERES,Jacquelyn M. Howard Pdf

Robert C. Vallieres struggled to find his ônew normalö when he returned home after serving in the military. An accident in Kuwait left him suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) internal injuries, leaving him in constant pain. After clinics, bottles of painkillers, and behavior modification pills, hope seemed to vanish. Then a local weekly newspaper ad caught his eye: a bird-watching trip to see raptors in the mountains of New Hampshire. An Emily Dickinson poem that states, ôHope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, and sings the tuneùwithout the words, and never stops at all,ö sprang to his mind. Wounded Warriors is VallieresÆs story of self-healing from crippling ôinvisibleö wounds through the help of birds. The problems of TBI and post-traumatic stress disorder do not have definitive solutions. His story of recovery offers a winged hope to thousands of military personnel who suffer these physical and mental battles.

The Wounded Body by Fabrizio Bondi,Massimo Stella,Andrea Torre Pdf

This edited collection explores the image of the wound as a ‘cultural symptom’ and a literary-visual trope at the core of representations of a new concept of selfhood in Early Modern Italian and English cultures, as expressed in the two complementary poles of poetry and theatre. The semantic field of the wounded body concerns both the image of the wound as a traumatic event, which leaves a mark on someone’s body and soul (and prompts one to investigate its causes and potential solutions), and the motif of the scar, which draws attention to the fact that time has passed and urges those who look at it to engage in an introspective and analytical process. By studying and describing the transmission of this metaphoric paradigm through the literary tradition, the contributors show how the image of the bodily wound—from Petrarch’s representation of the Self to the overt crisis that affects the heroes and the poetic worlds created by Ariosto and Tasso, Spenser and Shakespeare—could respond to the emergence of Modernity as a new cultural feature.
