WRAP THE SCRAP WITH DMAIC: Strategic Deployment of Six Sigma in Indian Foundry SMEs by Kjit Bikram Singh Pdf

Six Sigma approach is generally employed to improve the sigma level of manufacturing or service processes by reducing their deviations and defects. Six Sigma provides the opportunity to eliminate mistakes, improve morale and save money. Doing things right in first time and keeping them consistent is the only idea behind Six Sigma. Its fundamental objective is to achieve customer satisfaction with continuous improvement in quality and productivity. Mostly we are emphasizing on various tools or techniques being used during DMAIC projects and almost ignore the procedure to execute different phases of the Six Sigma project. This book provides unique step by step methodologies to perform Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control phases of a Six Sigma project, respectively. An empirical investigation has been carried out in a make-to-order type (medium sized) foundry and Six Sigma is successfully implemented by decreasing the scrap of piston castings, appreciably. The book focuses on scrap reduction specifically in Indian foundries and tries to find out the reasons of low productivity index. It also tends to shatter the various phobias of SMEs in context of Six Sigma by validating the compatibility of proposed methodologies through a successful case study in Indian foundry environments.

Enhancing Enterprise Intelligence: Leveraging ERP, CRM, SCM, PLM, BPM, and BI by Vivek Kale Pdf

Enhancing Enterprise Intelligence: Leveraging ERP, CRM, SCM, PLM, BPM, and BI takes a fresh look at the benefits of enterprise systems (ES), focusing on the fact that ES collectively contribute to enhancing the intelligence quotient of an enterprise. The book provides an overview of the characteristic domains (i.e., business functions, processes, and activities) addressed by the various categories of ES, namely, ERP, CRM, SCM, PLM, BPM, and BI. The book begins with an overview of agile enterprises and dimensions of intelligent enterprises. The middle chapters detail CRM’s decisive concept of customer centricity, SCM's differentiating concept of customer responsiveness, and PLM's stupendous transformative potential for renewing the enterprise along with the establishment of a collaborative enterprise with BPM and enterprise BPM methodology. The latter chapters deal with the realization of an informed enterprise with BI coupled with the novel concept of decision patterns. The author highlights the fact that any end-user application’s effectiveness and performance can be enhanced by transforming it from a bare transaction to one clothed by a surrounding context formed from an aggregate of all relevant past decision patterns. The final chapter examines various aspects relating to a successful ES implementation project, and the appendix provides an overview of the SAP Business Suite to give you a practical context to the discussions presented in the book.

RSM: A Key to Optimize Machining: Multi-Response Optimization of CNC Turning with Al-7020 Alloy by Bikram Jit Singh Pdf

Parametric optimization, especially in machining of non-ferrous alloys seems to be quite rare and needs an immediate attention because of its associated downstream financial and non-financial losses. This book tries to fill the gap and presents an optimization problem of commonly used Al-7020 Alloy. Principles of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) have been implemented through Minitab software to bring necessary multi-response optimization, while turning on a CNC turner. The present study focuses on to enhance Material Removal Rate (MRR) while simultaneously reducing the Surface Roughness (Ra), during turning of Al-alloy. Such opposite natured response optimization is much difficult to achieve, particularly when uncoated carbide tip has been used as a cutting tool. Intensive literature survey helps to pin point parameters like; Cutting Speed, Feed Rate and Depth of Cut as a most critical to machining parameters, as far as effective and efficient optimization of selected responses are concerned. All these control-parameters are directly or inversely related to each other. If the depth of cut is increased MRR increases at the same time we get poor surface finish. Increase in the cutting speed has positive impact on both material removal rate and surface finish. Shortlisted parameters are conflicting, so we have to optimize these for further enhancement of the overall turning performance. At last, the optimized results are verified by using ANOVA as a statistical tool. This book provides quite rare Case-study of multi-response optimization (while non-ferrous CNC turning) to practioners, machinists and SME owners appropriately.

Six Sigma by Mikel Harry, Ph.D.,Richard Schroeder Pdf

The extraordinary breakthrough management program--heralded by GE, Motorola, and AlliedSignal--that is sweeping corporate America with its unprecedented ability to achieve superior financial results. Six Sigma is the most powerful breakthrough management tool ever devised, promising increased market share, cost reductions, and dramatic improvements in bottom-line profitability for companies of any size. The darling of Wall Street, it has become the mantra of Fortune 500 boardrooms around the world because it works. What is Six Sigma? It is first and foremost a business process that enables companies to increase profits dramatically by streamlining operations, improving quality, and eliminating defects or mistakes in everything a company does, from filling out purchase orders to manufacturing airplane engines. While traditional quality programs have focused on detecting and correcting defects, Six Sigma encompasses something broader: It provides specific methods to re-create the process itself so that defects are never produced in the first place. Most companies operate at a three- to four-sigma level, where the cost of defects is roughly 20 to 30 percent of revenues. By approaching Six Sigma--fewer than one defect per 3.4 million opportunities--the cost of quality drops to less than 1 percent of sales. This is because the highest quality also results in the lowest costs. When GE reduced its costs from 20 percent to less than 10 percent, it saved a billion dollars in just two years--money that goes directly to the bottom line. This is the reason Wall Street and corporations as diverse as Sony, Ford, Nokia, Texas Instruments, Canon, Hitachi, Lockheed Martin, American Express, Toshiba, DuPont, and Polaroid have embarked on corporate-wide Six Sigma programs. Six Sigma should be of paramount importance to every forward-thinking executive and manager determined to make their company world-class in their industry.
