Chosen Country by James Pogue Pdf

"Whoever you are, whatever side you’re on, if you care about the American west and what’s happening to it, read this book." —Caroline Fraser, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Prairie Fires An extraordinary inside look at America’s militia movement that shows a country at the crossroads of class, culture, and insurrection. In a remote corner of Oregon, James Pogue found himself at the heart of a rebellion. Granted unmatched access by Ammon Bundy to the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Pogue met ranchers and militiamen ready to die fighting the federal government. He witnessed the fallout of communities riven by politics and the danger (and allure) of uncompromising religious belief. The occupation ended in the shooting death of one rancher, the imprisonment of dozens more, and a firestorm over the role of government that engulfed national headlines. In a raw and restless narrative that roams the same wild terrain as his literary forebears Edward Abbey and Hunter S. Thompson, Pogue's Chosen Country examines the underpinnings of this rural uprising and struggles to reconcile diverging ideas of freedom, tracing a cultural fault line that spans the nation.

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton Pdf

A finalist for the 2020 Thurber Prize for American Humor! "The Secret Life of Pets meets The Walking Dead" in this big-hearted, boundlessly beautiful romp through the Apocalypse, where a foul-mouthed crow is humanity's only chance to survive Seattle's zombie problem (Karen Joy Fowler, PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author). S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®. But when Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, S.T. starts to think something's not quite right. His tried-and-true remedies—from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis—fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he suddenly discovers that the neighbors are devouring one other. Local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of Seattle's dangerous new predators. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a cowardly crow whose only knowledge of the world comes from TV. What could possibly go wrong? Includes a Reading Group Guide.

Now the planet is full of ghosts wandering a wasteland of a destroyed planet. What happened, and what does it mean about the afterlife?Look-shifting: Technology has evolved to allow us to change our entire appearance whenever we want, with convincing reality. Skin, hair, eyes, height, body shape, gender, everything. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?Superstitious Gods: Every superstition is a god. They wander the earth, affecting those people who worship them by upholding, or failing to adhere to, their requirements. Some are friendly, others mischievous, some downright malevolent. Which god or gods do you worship?Introduction: I get my writing prompt ideas from many different places. Some of the more familiar seeming ones probably come from books I've read or movies I've watched, and I've tried to put my own twist on them. Others are from my own stories. They are more generalized questions of the ones that are behind my own writings. Some of the more surreal ones are from my dreams. I have no end of strange and unsettling dreams to draw upon for odd scenarios to find oneself in. Lastly, the truly vague or random-seeming ones are likely from an idle, nonsensical thought that crossed my mind at some random point, and I wondered what people would make of it. For most of my prompts, I deliberately attempted to keep them as vague and as undetailed as possible, avoiding genders, races, and anything that might point a writer to a specific solution to the scenarios. I don't want to give people a specific story to write. I want to give them a question to ponder that will allow them to create their own stories from their own unique experiences. So look at the prompts and answer them however you want. If you write comedy, answer them humorously. If you write dark drama, then answer with worst-case scenarios. If you write romance, try and figure out how two people could fall in love under those circumstances. If you're into historical writing, try and find examples in history of when someone might have faced a similar challenge.Or if you're like me, ponder them with all the seriousness of a life-changing decision, regardless of what genre of story the answer that comes out may fall under. Wonder how a person could come to that place in their life, what life experiences would drive them to make the decisions they did, and when you have an answer, then ask yourself what would have made them choose to do the exact opposite, or what would happen if a different decision had been made. Do this even if the answers you find make you uncomfortable. Do it especially if they make your skin crawl and your stomach turn, and then let your characters rationalize to you their craziness, madness, insanity, desperation, and fear.

Playlist for the Apocalypse: Poems by Rita Dove Pdf

Finalist for the 2022 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the 2021 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Poetry A piercing, unflinching new volume offers necessary music for our tumultuous present, from “perhaps the best public poet we have” (Boston Globe). In her first volume of new poems in twelve years, Rita Dove investigates the vacillating moral compass guiding America’s, and the world’s, experiments in democracy. Whether depicting the first Jewish ghetto in sixteenth-century Venice or the contemporary efforts of Black Lives Matter, a girls’ night clubbing in the shadow of World War II or the doomed nobility of Muhammad Ali’s conscious objector stance, this extraordinary poet never fails to connect history’s grand exploits to the triumphs and tragedies of individual lives. Meticulously orchestrated and musical in its forms, Playlist for the Apocalypse collects a dazzling array of voices: an elevator operator simmers with resentment, an octogenarian dances an exuberant mambo, a spring cricket philosophizes with mordant humor on hip hop, critics, and Valentine’s Day. Calamity turns all too personal in the book’s final section, “Little Book of Woe,” which charts a journey from terror to hope as Dove learns to cope with debilitating chronic illness. At turns audaciously playful and grave, alternating poignant meditations on mortality and acerbic observations of injustice, Playlist for the Apocalypse takes us from the smallest moments of redemption to catastrophic failures of the human soul. Listen up, the poet says, speaking truth to power; what you’ll hear in return is “a lifetime of song.”

Notes from an Apocalypse by Mark O'Connell Pdf

AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • An absorbing, deeply felt book about our anxious present tense—and coming to grips with the future, by the author of the award-winning To Be a Machine. “Deeply funny and life-affirming, with a warm, generous outlook even on the most challenging of subjects.” —Esquire We’re alive in a time of worst-case scenarios: The weather has gone uncanny. A pandemic draws our global community to a halt. Everywhere you look there’s an omen, a joke whose punchline is the end of the world. How is a person supposed to live in the shadow of such a grim future? What might it be like to live through the worst? And what on earth is anybody doing about it? Dublin-based writer Mark O’Connell is consumed by these questions—and, as the father of two young children, he finds them increasingly urgent. In Notes from an Apocalypse, he crosses the globe in pursuit of answers. He tours survival bunkers in South Dakota. He ventures to New Zealand, a favored retreat of billionaires banking on civilization’s collapse. He engages with would-be Mars colonists, preppers, right-wing conspiracists. And he bears witness to places, like Chernobyl, that the future has already visited—real-life portraits of the end of the world as we know it. What emerges is an absorbing, funny, and deeply felt book about our anxious present tense—and coming to grips with what’s ahead.
