On Diary by Philippe Lejeune Pdf

On Diary is the second collection in English of the groundbreaking and profoundly influential work of one of the best-known and provocative theorists of autobiography and diary. Ranging from the diary’s historical origins to its pervasive presence on the Internet, from the spiritual journey of the sixteenth century to the diary of Anne Frank, and from the materials and methods of diary writing to the question of how diaries end, these essays display Philippe Lejeune’s expertise, eloquence, passion, and humor as a commentator on the functions, practices, and significance of keeping or reading a diary. Lejeune is a leading European critic and theorist of diary and autobiography. His landmark essay, "The Autobiographical Pact," has shaped life writing studies for more than thirty years, and his many books and essays have repeatedly opened up new vistas for scholarship. As Michael Riffaterre notes, "Lejeune’s work on autobiography is the most original, powerful, effective approach to a difficult subject. . . . His style is very personal, lively. It grabs the reader as scholarship rarely does. Lejeune’s erudition and methodology are impeccable." Two substantial introductory essays by Jeremy Popkin and Julie Rak place Lejeune’s work within its critical and theoretical traditions and comment on his central importance within the fields of life writing, literary genetic studies, and cultural studies.

An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology by Amalananda Ghosh Pdf

"An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.

The Art of Engraving, with the Various Modes of Operation Under the Following Different Divisions by Theodore Henry Fielding Pdf

By the second quarter of the nineteenth century both stipple engraving and aquatint, regarded by Fielding as an art 'invented for the torment of man', were no longer widely used by publishers for large-scale reproductive engravings. Line engraving with its 'beautiful but more or less mechanical arrangement of lines' was also losing ground to the freer style attainable through lithography. The manufactured demand for the 'beautiful productions of our best engravers' through literary annuals 'flung with a prodigal hand before the public, at a price for which they should never have been sold, and which only an excessive sale could render profitable', had outpaced both the supply of engravers and the speed with which such fine plates could be executed. It was therefore to an adaptation of the tonal characteristics offered by the eighteenth century mezzotint that artists such as Fielding turned, to offer a speedier means of producing the softer tonal qualities demanded by the lastest taste. Written in the midst of this period of technical experimentation Fielding's manual is particularly important in detailing the engraver's response to new commercial pressures."The first book to have a chapter solely devoted to all aspects of photography" (Quayle). Particular reference is made to J.N. Niepce, who took the first photograph in 1826, but whose achievement was not made public until 1841, and there is also a section on Daguerre. "...contains information on what were then the most up-to-date matters, including lithography and electrography. Fielding quotes Partington extensively, almost verbatim in parts, describing his source as a "celebrated work on engraving", but he commences with a highly critical view of steel engraving and its evils, having very little to say in its favour. [Fieldings book] was used extensively a year or two later by W.L. Maberley, who published The Print Collector in 1844." from Hunnisett p34. see also Dyson, Pictures to Print p.118 for good reference to this work. See also Printmaking and Picture Printing A28 for details on the plates.

Writing Beyond Pen and Parchment by Ricarda Wagner,Christine Neufeld,Ludger Lieb Pdf

What can stories of magical engraved rings or prophetic inscriptions on walls tell us about how writing was perceived before print transformed the world? Writing beyond Pen and Parchment introduces readers to a Middle Ages where writing is not confined to manuscripts but is inscribed in the broader material world, in textiles and tombs, on weapons or human skin. Drawing on the work done at the Collaborative Research Centre “Material Text Cultures,” (SFB 933) this volume presents a comparative overview of how and where text-bearing artefacts appear in medieval German, Old Norse, British, French, Italian and Iberian literary traditions, and also traces the paths inscribed objects chart across multiple linguistic and cultural traditions. The volume’s focus on the raw materials and practices that shaped artefacts both mundane or fantastical in medieval narratives offers a fresh perspective on the medieval world that takes seriously the vibrancy of matter as a vital aspect of textual culture often overlooked.

Picture-Writing of the American Indians by Garrick Mallery Pdf

This work is essential for anyone doing research in rock art and petroglyphs. Col. Garrick Mallery's report on the picture-writing of the American Indians is one of the most significant of all the early reports of the Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. Besides a special section on petroglyphs, most of the specimens are roughly contemporary with the report's writing and were collected by ethnologists, explorers, and expeditions to reservations. The focus is on the significance of the pictures and the dissimilarities between the styles of picture-writing of the various tribes. Col. Mallery's report is the fundamental study of North American Indian picture-writing for anthropologists, sociologists, historians, or artists. Since most of the samples were collected by peers while picturing was still a vital method of communication, the ethnologists were often helped by the Indians themselves in interpreting the pictographs and uncovering the wealth of information they conveyed. The report consists of almost 1,300 pictures and 54 plates illustrating the samples which Col. Mallery describes.
