Thomas Wyatt (1503?-1542) was the first modern voice in English poetry. 'Chieftain' of a 'new company of courtly makers', he brought the Italian poetic Renaissance to England, but he was also revered as prophet-poet of the Reformation. His poetry holds a mirror to the secret, capricious world of Henry VIII's court, and alludes darkly to events which it might be death to describe. In the Tower, twice, Wyatt was betrayed and betrayer. This remarkably original biography is more - and less - than a Life, for Wyatt is so often elusive, in flight, like his Petrarchan lover, into the 'heart's forest'. Rather, it is an evocation of Wyatt among his friends, and his enemies, at princely courts in England, Italy, France and Spain, or alone in contemplative retreat. Following the sources - often new discoveries, from many archives - as far as they lead, Susan Brigden seeks Wyatt in his 'diverseness', and explores his seeming confessions of love and faith and politics. Supposed, at the time and since, to be the lover of Anne Boleyn, he was also the devoted 'slave' of Katherine of Aragon. Aspiring to honesty, he was driven to secrets and lies, and forced to live with the moral and mortal consequences of his shifting allegiances. As ambassador to Emperor Charles V, he enjoyed favour, but his embassy turned to nightmare when the Pope called for a crusade against the English King and sent the Inquisition against Wyatt. At Henry VIII's court, where only silence brought safety, Wyatt played the idealized lover, but also tried to speak truth to power. Wyatt's life, lived so restlessly and intensely, provides a way to examine a deep questioning at the beginning of the Renaissance and Reformation in England. Above all, this new biography is attuned to Wyatt's dissonant voice and broken lyre, the paradox within him of inwardness and the will to 'make plain' his heart, all of which make him exceptionally difficult to know - and fascinating to explore.
Part two of the epic three-part conclusion to the Ruthless People and Children of Vice series... Do you understand why I asked you last time, how well do you think you knew the Callahans? Because I knew you don’t know them. Not in the way I knew them. But don’t worry. I’ll reintroduce you to them. The real them. I will show you what they are all really, truly, capable of, because I am no longer in the shadows. I am here. In my kingdom, at last. And I do not give a damn about your opinions of me, or the one who came before me. We are doing things my way now. So bow...or be broken. Sincerely, Mrs. Callahan
Pictures-within-Pictures in Nineteenth-Century Britain by Catherine Roach Pdf
Repainting the work of another into one?s own canvas is a deliberate and often highly fraught act of reuse. This book examines the creation, display, and reception of such images. Artists working in nineteenth-century London were in a peculiar position: based in an imperial metropole, yet undervalued by their competitors in continental Europe. Many claimed that Britain had yet to produce a viable national school of art. Using pictures-within-pictures, British painters challenged these claims and asserted their role in an ongoing visual tradition. By transforming pre-existing works of art, they also asserted their own painterly abilities. Recognizing these statements provided viewers with pleasure, in the form of a witty visual puzzle solved, and with prestige, in the form of cultural knowledge demonstrated. At stake for both artist and audience in such exchanges was status: the status of the painter relative to other artists, and the status of the viewer relative to other audience members. By considering these issues, this book demonstrates a new approach to images of historic displays. Through examinations of works by J.M.W. Turner, John Everett Millais, John Scarlett Davis, Emma Brownlow King, and William Powell Frith, this book reveals how these small passages of paint conveyed both personal and national meanings.

George Hadfield: Architect of the Federal City by Julia King Pdf
During his lifetime, the work of architect George Hadfield (1763-1826) was highly regarded, both in England and the United States. Since his death, however, Hadfield's contributions to architecture have slowly faded from view, and few of his buildings survive. In order to reassess Hadfield's career and work, this book draws upon a wide selection of written and visual sources to reconstruct his life and legacy. After a general introduction, the book begins with an outline of Hadfield's early years and moves on to look in detail at the extant major buildings in Washington, D.C. that he worked on: the Capitol, Arlington House and Old City Hall. Hadfield's contributions to the Capitol and other Federal buildings are fully researched and assessed for the first time and Arlington House is set in context and shown to have been much more influential than has been appreciated hitherto. New material is presented on City Hall, which is another major and unjustly neglected contribution to the architecture of Washington. The complicated interlocking circles of his family and friends, his fellow architects, and his patrons and clients, including the transatlantic connections, are also explored, revealing much about the course of his career and American architecture in general. Subsequent chapters and the Catalogue explore the other projects that Hadfield was involved with, ranging from office buildings, jails, theatres, factories and banks to a mausoleum and monuments. The book ends with a reassessment of Hadfield's qualities and influence, arguing that these were greater than is often acknowledged. By offering explanations as to why his work was particularly admired by contemporaries, it is concluded that Hadfield's architectural style has been influential from his own times to the present and has been disseminated throughout the United States.
