Letters from an Alien Schoolboy by Ros Asquith Pdf

When Flowkwee goes to planet Earth on a mission, he has to stay disguised—as a small Earthling called Nigel, with only one head and four appendages! But that's not all: His personal mission is to go to a school every day to collect Earthlings to "improve." Nigel knows he has to act dumb around the Earthlings, so in math class he pretends he only knows his times table up until two million and six times nine, and in literacy class he pretends to read like a newborn Faathing baby. A lot of Earthling life is totally weird to Nigel—the odd removable skins Earthlings wear called "clothes" and the funny paint on his mom's face called "makeup"—but in some ways Earth is even better than planet Faa. Earth is full of cool sounds made up of all different pitches and noises called "music," and Earthlings get gifts every year on their birthdays, just for being alive! But while Nigel starts to embrace his Earthling self, in the background lurks a coming invasion that his dad keeps talking about. And why are they so interested in a substance called "spinach"? Letters from an Alien Schoolboy is sure to delight even the most reluctant readers as Earthling kids giggle their way through Nigel's gaffes and escapades. This is a fantastic gift for girls and boys eight and up!

The Great Big Book of Families by Mary Hoffman Pdf

What is a family? Once, it was said to be a father, mother, boy, girl, cat and dog living in a house with a garden. But as times have changed, families have changed too, and now there are almost as many kinds of families as colours of the rainbow - from a mum and dad or single parent to two mums or two dads, from a mixed-race family to children with different mums and dads, to families with a disabled member. Mary Hoffman takes a look through children's eyes at the wide varieties of family life: from homes, food, ways of celebrating, schools and holidays to getting around, jobs and housework, from extended families, languages and hobbies to pets and family trees - and she concludes that, for most people, their own family is the best one of all! With Ros Asquith's delightful pictures, this book takes a fresh, optimistic look at families of today.

Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup Pdf

Filmatized in 2013 and the official recipient of three Oscars, Solomon Northup's powerful slave narrative 'Twelve Years a Slave' depicts Nortup's life as he is sold into slavery after having spent 32 years of his life living as a free man in New York. Working as a travelling musician, Northup goes to Washington D.C, where he is kidnapped, sent to New Orleans, and sold to a planter to suffer the relentless and brutal life of a slave. After a dozen years, Northup escapes to return to his family and pulls no punches, as he describes his fate and that of so many other black people at the time. It is a harrowing but vitally important book, even today. For further reading on this subject, try 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Solomon Northup (c.1807-c.1875) was an American abolitionist and writer, best remembered for his powerful race memoir 'Twelve Years a Slave'. At the age of 32, when he was a married farmer, father-of-three, violinist and free-born man, he was kidnapped in Washington D.C and shipped to New Orleans, sold to a planter and enslaved for a dozen years. When he gained his freedom, he wrote his famous memoir and spent some years lecturing across the US,on behalf of the abolitionist movement. 'Twelve Years a Slave' was published a year after 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe and built on the anti-slavery momentum it had developed. Northup's final years are something of a mystery, though it is thought that he struggled to cope with family life after being freed.

Representations of Youth by Christine Griffin Pdf

Representations of Youth examines the various constructions of 'youth' and 'adolescence' in recent British and North American research. Mainstream and radical approaches have presented a series of 'crises' about young people in relation to, among other things, unemployment, 'teenage pregnancy' and 'delinquency'. This book considers research in psychology, sociology, education, criminology and cultural studies in order to assess these accounts. The author offers a critical review of a wide range of findings about young people in areas as diverse as education and training, leisure, family life and sexuality. She shows that whilst youth research texts do not reflect young people's experiences in any straightforward manner, they do indicate the various complex and contradictory ways in which 'youth', 'adolescence' and specific groups of young people are represented in contemporary western societies. In so arguing, she presents new terms for thinking about the position of young people today. This is an important new text accessibly written for students of sociology, social psychology and contemporary culture in both Britain and the USA. It will also be of great interest to social science researchers in a range of other disciplines.

Feast Or Famine? Food and Children's Literature by Bridget Carrington,Jennifer Harding Pdf

In November 2013, the joint annual conference of the British branch of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY UK) and the MA course at the National Centre for Research in Childrens Literature (NCRCL) at Roehampton University took as its focus Feast or Famine? Food in Childrens Literature. Food is central to both childrens lives and their literature. The mouth-watering menu of talks given to the conference delegates is richly reflected in this book. Speakers examined the uses of food in childrens books from the nineteenth century to the present day, and in a wide variety of genres, from ancient fable to twenty-first-century fantasy. From the contributions to this collection, it is shown that food within literature not only reflects the society, culture and time in which it is prepared, but also is widely used by authors as a means to instruct their juvenile readers, and to deliver moral messages.
