Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern by Ervad Phiroze Shapurji Masani Pdf

Excerpt from Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern: Comprising a Review of Dr. Dhalla's Book of Zoroastrian Theology The courageous action of that great Parsi, the late lamented Sir Dinshah Dhanjibhai Davar in convincing his colleagues on the board of the Parsi Panchayat Trustees, that Dr. Dhalla's book on Zoroastrian Theology was not worthy of the Trustees support, inasmuch as it was written along heterodox lines that were calculated to injure the deep-rooted religious sentiments of the large majority of his co-religionists, by reason of the doubts and ridicule cast therein on their time-hallowed tenets and practices, aroused great indignation and much recrimination in the tiny camp of so-called Keformers, but gave intense satisfaction to the community at large. It will be a matter of further satisfaction to my co-religionists (barring a handful of misguided Progress(! )-valas) that Ervad Pheroze Shahpoorji Masani, that energetic, enthusiastic and learned Athornan, who has won deserved popularity by his courageous efforts after religious revival and social purity, should have undertaken the task of publishing a detailed reply to the many harmful doctrines and interpretations which Dr. Dhalla has ventilated in that book. It is no doubt true that the ideas embodied in "Zoroastrian Theology" are not in any sense new or original, but are repetitions of what a thimbleful of self-styled reformers(!) have been moving heaven and earth, in season and out of season, to promulgate in the Parsi community; and though the latter, as a whole, has treated such attempts with silent con tempt, and turned a sneering deaf-ear to the fads of the more or less materialistic Sudharavalas, it might be as well to have in print a reply to these oft repeated arguments from one who is well qualified to refute them. Ervad Masani has received high University education and has for nearly twelve years made a study of the Parsi Scriptures in their original languages, the Avesta and Pahlavi. The Hymns of Zoroaster by M. L. West Pdf

Zoroaster was one of the greatest and most radical religious reformers in the history of the world. The faith that he founded some 2600 years ago in a remote region of central Asia flourished to become the bedrock of a great empire as well as its official religion. Zoroastrianism is still practised today in parts of India and Iran and in smaller communities elsewhere, where its adherents are known as Parsis. It has the distinction of being one of the most ancient religions in the world: only Hinduism can lay claim to greater antiquity. The foundation texts of this venerable system of belief are the founder's own passionate poems, known as the Gathas ('Songs'), and a short ritual composed soon after his death, called the Liturgy in Seven Chapters. These hymns are the authentic utterances of a religious leader whose thought was way ahead of his time, and are among the most precious relics of human civilization. After so many millennia they continue to speak to us of an impressively austere theology and of an inspiring and easily understood moral code. Yet existing translations are few, divergent in their interpretations of the original Avestan language of Zoroaster, and frequently hard to access. M L West's new translation, based on the best modern scholarship, and augmented by a substantial introduction and notes, makes these powerfully resonant texts available to a wide audience in clear and accessible form. 'A thoroughly worthwhile and refreshingly readable translation of the Older Avesta, M L West's book will be widely welcomed, by students and general readers alike.' - Almut Hintze, Zartoshty Reader in Zoroastrianism, School of Oriental and African Studies, London

The Zoroastrian Flame by Sarah Stewart,Alan Williams,Almut Hintze Pdf

For many centuries, from the birth of the religion late in the second millennium BC to its influence on the Achaemenids and later adoption in the third century AD as the state religion of the Sasanian Empire, it enjoyed imperial patronage and profoundly shaped the culture of antiquity. The Magi of the New Testament most probably were Zoroastrian priests from the Iranian world, while the enigmatic figure of Zarathushtra (or Zoroaster) himself has exerted continual fascination in the West, influencing creative artists as diverse as Voltaire, Nietzsche, Mozart and Yeats. This authoritative volume brings together internationally recognised scholars to explore Zoroastrianism in all its rich complexity. Examining key themes such as history and modernity, tradition and scripture, art and architecture and minority status and religious identity, it places the modern Zoroastrians of Iran, and the Parsis of India, in their proper contexts. The book extends and complements the coverage of its companion volume, The Everlasting Flame.

Pious Citizens by Monica M. Ringer Pdf

In Pious Citizens, Ringer tells the story of a major intellectual revolution in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century India and Iran, one that radically transformed the role of religion in society. At this time, key theological debates revolved around Zoroastrianism’s capacity to generate “progress” and “civilization.” Armed with both the destructive and creative capacities of historicism, reformers reevaluated their own religious tradition, molding Zoroastrian belief and practice according to contemporary ideas of rational religion and its potential to create pious citizens. Ringer demonstrates how rational and enlightened religion, characterized by social responsibility and the interiorization of piety, was understood as essential for the development of modern individuals, citizens, new public space, national identity, and secularism. She argues persuasively that reformers believed not only that social reform must be accompanied by religious reform but that it was in fact a product of religious reform. Pious Citizens offers new insights into the theological premises behind the promotion of secularism, the privatization of religion, and the development of new national identities. Ringer’s work also explores growing connections between the Iranian and Indian Zoroastrian communities and the revival of the ancient Persian past.
