Zulu Empire Decolonised by Shalo Mbatha Pdf

The first ever written Zulu history book covering 800 years of authentic history, written from the traditional Zulu perspective. This riveting and climatic saga describes in detail how King Shaka kaSenzangakhona constructed a formidable military empire out of a small, humble Zulu community. The author uses the royal lineage of the Zulu kings as the golden thread to tie the narration of the Zulu nation together. With mise-en-scene, descriptive historical events uncovered and woven together with never-before-told, intimate details of the Zulu royal household; the reader gains a holistic and evenly weighted understanding of the Zulu empire outside of the European perspective. With a foreword of endorsement in authenticity written by the reigning sovereign Zulu King, the book starts with the Zulu perspective of creation, Zulu mythology, culture and their unparalleled military feats. It describes how seasons are interpreted, the names of the planets, stars as well as the structure of the Zulu calendar. It details how King Shaka kaSenzangakhona invented genius military strategies to achieve the impossible and defeated the great British army at iSandlwana, at its peak during the colonial era. Zulu Empire Decolonised is packed with critical historical events that shaped the outcome of what we know of the Zulu nation and democratic 21st century South Africa.

The Anglo-Zulu War by Charles River Editors Pdf

*Includes pictures *Includes excerpts of contemporary accounts *Includes a bibliography for further reading "He is Shaka the unshakeable, Thunderer-while-sitting, son of MenziHe is the bird that preys on other birds, The battle-axe that excels over other battle-axes in sharpness, He is the long-strided pursuer, son of Ndaba, Who pursued the sun and the moon.He is the great hubbub like the rocks of NkandlaWhere elephants take shelterWhen the heavens frown..." - a Zulu song The modern history of Africa was, until very recently, written on behalf of the indigenous races by the white man, who had forcefully entered the continent during a particularly hubristic and dynamic phase of European history. In 1884, Prince Otto von Bismarck, the German chancellor, brought the plenipotentiaries of all major powers of Europe together, to deal with Africa's colonization in such a manner as to avoid provocation of war. This event-known as the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885-galvanized a phenomenon that came to be known as the Scramble for Africa. The conference established two fundamental rules for European seizure of Africa. The first of these was that no recognition of annexation would granted without evidence of a practical occupation, and the second, that a practical occupation would be deemed unlawful without a formal appeal for protection made on behalf of a territory by its leader, a plea that must be committed to paper in the form of a legal treaty. This began a rush, spearheaded mainly by European commercial interests in the form of Chartered Companies, to penetrate the African interior and woo its leadership with guns, trinkets and alcohol, and having thus obtained their marks or seals upon spurious treaties, begin establishing boundaries of future European African colonies. The ease with which this was achieved was due to the fact that, at that point, traditional African leadership was disunited, and the people had just staggered back from centuries of concussion inflicted by the slave trade. Thus, to usurp authority, to intimidate an already broken society, and to play one leader against the other was a diplomatic task so childishly simple, the matter was wrapped up, for the most part, in less than a decade. There were some exceptions to this, however, and the most notable was the Zulu Kingdom, a centralized monarchy of enormous military prowess that would require a full-fledged war for the British to pacify. At the height of its power in the southern part of Africa, the Zulu could rely on an army of 40,000 warriors, presenting a formidable obstacle to the designs of the British, who eventually engaged in a full-scale conflict with the Zulu due to their own geopolitical concerns. When the fighting started at the beginning of 1879, British military leader Lord Chelmsford assured, "'If I am called upon to conduct operations against them, I shall strive to be in a position to show them how hopelessly inferior they are to us in fighting power, altho' numerically stronger." Less than 10 days later, Chelmsford had lost nearly 33% of his fighting force at the Battle of Isandlwana. From that point forward, the British began to take the Zulu more seriously, and over the next half year, they subdued the Zulu nation. The military conflict helped immortalize the Zulu in the minds of Westerners, but their history was far from finished in 1879. The Zulu persevered, only to suffer under the depredations of South Africa's apartheid system, but they also outlasted that, and even today they remain the largest ethnic group in South Africa. The Anglo-Zulu War: The History and Legacy of the British Empire's Conflict with the Zulu Kingdom in South Africa examines the rise of the Zulu Kingdom, how it came into contact with the British, and the famous war. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Anglo-Zulu War like never before.

Shaka Zulu by E. A. Ritter Pdf

E. A. Ritter's "Shaka Zulu", the great biography of a Zulu king whose achievements rivalled those of his contemporary, Napoleon, in Europe, has established itself as a classic of African history. Shaka was born in 1787, the illegitimate son of a minor chieftain. Branded with this shame, he strove even harder to execute the rigorous duties required of Zulu youths. Excelling in everything he undertook, he soon proved himself a born leader. Gathering about him a nucleus of some 500 untrained tribesmen, he built up an immense army of skilled warriors, conquering and pacifying a territory larger than Europe -- all in the space of twelve years. Although Shaka was capable of cruelties, the author shows that the legends of his atrocities have been grossly exaggerated; paradoxically, Shaka considered many of the white men's punishments inhuman. At the peak of his career, Shaka was assassinated by his jealous brothers, and within fifty years his work was undone. But assassination, usurpation and his own excesses cannot dim the savage greatness of the man and the king, which emanates so strongly from the pages of this book. -- From publisher's description.

Images of Colonialism and Decolonisation in the Italian Media by Paolo Bertella Farnetti,Cecilia Dau Novelli Pdf

The twentieth century saw a proliferation of media discourses on colonialism and, later, decolonisation. Newspapers, periodicals, films, radio and TV broadcasts contributed to the construction of the image of the African “Other” across the colonial world. In recent years, a growing body of literature has explored the role of these media in many colonial societies. As regards the Italian context, however, although several works have been published about the links between colonial culture and national identity, none have addressed the specific role of the media and their impact on collective memory (or lack thereof). This book fills that gap, providing a review of images and themes that have surfaced and resurfaced over time. The volume is divided into two sections, each organised around an underlying theme: while the first deals with visual memory and images from the cinema, radio, television and new media, the second addresses the role of the printed press, graphic novels and comics, photography and trading cards.

Archives, Objects, Places and Landscapes by Manyanga, Munyaradzi,Chirikure, Shadreck Pdf

Dissatisfaction has matured in Africa and elsewhere around the fact that often, the dominant frameworks for interpreting the continent's past are not rooted on the continent's value system and philosophy. This creates knowledge that does not make sense especially to local communities. The big question therefore is can Africans develop theories that can contribute towards the interpretation of the African past, using their own experiences? Framed within a concept revision substrate, the collection of papers in this thought provoking volume argues for concept revision as a step towards decolonizing knowledge in the post-colony. The various papers powerfully expose that 'cleansed' knowledge is not only locally relevant: it is also locally accessible and globally understandable.

Museums in a Digital Age by Ross Parry Pdf

The influence of digital media on the cultural heritage sector has been pervasive and profound. Today museums are reliant on new technology to manage their collections. They collect digital as well as material things. New media is embedded within their exhibition spaces. And their activity online is as important as their physical presence on site. However, ‘digital heritage’ (as an area of practice and as a subject of study) does not exist in one single place. Its evidence base is complex, diverse and distributed, and its content is available through multiple channels, on varied media, in myriad locations, and different genres of writing. It is this diaspora of material and practice that this Reader is intended to address. With over forty chapters (by some fifty authors and co-authors), from around the world, spanning over twenty years of museum practice and research, this volume acts as an aggregator drawing selectively from a notoriously distributed network of content. Divided into seven parts (on information, space, access, interpretation, objects, production and futures), the book presents a series of cross-sections through the body of digital heritage literature, each revealing how a different aspect of curatorship and museum provision has been informed, shaped or challenged by computing. Museums in a Digital Age is a provocative and inspiring guide for any student or practitioner of digital heritage.

As by Fire by Jonathan D. Jansen Pdf

"What are the real roots of the student protests of 2015 and 2016? Is it actually about fees? Why did so many protests turn violent? Where is the government while the buildings burn, and do the students know how to end the protests? Former Free State University Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Jansen delves into the unprecedented disruption of universities that caught South Africa by surprise. In frank interviews with eleven of the VCs most affected, he examines the forces at work, why the protests escalate into chaos, and what is driving - and exasperating - our youth. This urgent and necessary book gives us an insider view of the crisis, tells us why the conflict will not go away and what it means for the future of our universities."--Back cover.

Africa in the World by Ben Burt Pdf

"This book challenges attitudes towards Africa by tracing Africa's contribution to world history, from ancient Egypt to the present. It explores Africa's role in the ancient Mediterranean, the medieval world of Islam and the trading networks of Asia. Africa's contribution to globalisation is traced through the legacy of the Atlantic slave trade and European colonisation. The resulting diaspora, establishing Africans in the Americas and Europe, and Europeans and Asians in Africa, questions easy assumptions about what we mean by Africa." "Using objects with African associations, mainly from the British Museum, the author explores the major themes of Africa's history in the world, to create a digestible museum history of Africa."--BOOK JACKET.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy by Fatima Pirbhai-Illich,Shauneen Pete,Fran Martin Pdf

This book convincingly argues that effective culturally responsive pedagogies require teachers to firstly undertake a critical deconstruction of Self in relation to and with the Other; and secondly, to take into account how power affects the socio-political, cultural and historical contexts in which the education relation takes place. The contributing authors are from a range of diaspora, indigenous, and white mainstream communities, and are united in their desire to challenge the hegemony of Eurocentric education and to create new educational spaces that are more socially and environmentally just. In this venture, the ideal education process is seen to be inherently critical and intercultural, where mainstream and marginalized, colonized and colonizer, indigenous and settler communities work together to decolonize selves, teacher-student relationships, pedagogies, the curriculum and the education system itself. This book will be of great interest and relevance to policy-makers and researchers in the field of education; teacher educators; and pre- and in-service teachers.
