The Evolution of Military Power in the West and Asia by Pauline Eadie,Wyn Rees Pdf
This book investigates how states in both the West and Asia have responded to multi-dimensional security challenges since the end of the Cold War, focusing on military transformation. Looking at a cross-section of different countries, this volume assesses how their armed forces have responded to a changing international security context. The book investigates two main themes. First, how the process of military ‘transformation’- in terms of technological advances and new ways of conducting warfare - has impacted on the militaries of various countries. These technologies are hugely expensive and the extent to which different states can afford them, and the ability of these states to utilise these technologies, differs greatly. Second, the volume investigates the social dimensions of military transformation. It reveals the expanding breadth of tasks that contemporary armed forces have been required to address. This includes the need for military forces to work with other actors, such as non-governmental agencies and humanitarian organisations, and the ability of armed forces to fight asymmetric opponents and conduct post-conflict reconstruction tasks. The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan exemplified how important the relationship between technological and social transformation has become. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, military innovation, Asian politics, security studies and International Relations.

Chinese Lessons from Other Peoples' Wars by Andrew Scobell Pdf
The importance of China stems not only from its current international role and its influence on the Asia-Pacific region in particular, but also because China's impact on global developments will likely continue to grow. One of our enduring imperatives is to accurately survey China's experiences as a means to grasp its existing perceptions, motivations, and ambitions. More than ever, solid, evidence-based evaluation of what the PLA has learned from the use of force and conflict elsewhere in the world is needed to shed light on the prospects for its cooperation, or rivalry, with the international community. This volume provides unique, valuable insights on how the PLA has applied the lessons learned from others' military actions to its own strategic planning. Edited by Dr. Andrew Scobell, Dr. David Lai, Mr. Roy Kamphausen. State Capacity Building in Contemporary China by Hiroko Naito,Vida Macikenaite Pdf
This volume explores the governing mechanism employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the light of state capacity building. It is built on the premise that regime type notwithstanding, boosting state capacity and utilizing it in their political survival is of crucial concern for any political leader. Xi Jinping, who is no exception to this, has called for the necessity to expand state capacity while he aims to centralize the power under the party. This volume stands out as it offers a comprehensive view of Chinese party-state, especially under Xi Jinping. The research presented here is built on the analysis of authentic datasets and materials. It examines the CCP’s relations with various state organs in the Chinese political system, mainly, administrative organs, legislature (the people’s congresses), judicial branch (the people’s court system), as well as the military (the People’s Liberation Army) and state-owned enterprises. This volume attempts to bring China closer to the field of comparative politics making it a more comparable case.
