編輯室報告文化研究一個迷人的獨特之處或許是：研究的問題總是由某些異質接觸的遭遇而激活的複雜性(complexity)。這項特色幾乎描述了本期的所有論文。「華人七○年代」，跨國跨洋、世代交錯，當然絕不單純。在日本與台灣之間的戰前沖繩八重山群島，一個民族語言、歷史文化交錯，不斷重劃疆界的「交界場域」，同樣的複雜。一個古老的伊比鳩魯物理概念，偶微偏，在當代文學藝術、科學、哲學等不同谷道的奔流，是在莫測的思想史上醞成的複雜氣象。香港、札幌、澳門三個城市少年監獄的研究，描繪了從警治到犯罪學與主流社工論述藉著構築對「偏差」的道德恐慌而建制身分檢查與納入排除的規訓機械，同時卻也洩漏了規訓機械無法馴化的被囚主體，見證了他們挑釁常規的演作；且容我稱之為「被囚主體的複雜性」。香港藝術館的《不中不英》展覽，標題即已透露的不僅是殖民遭遇之下港式廣東話不中不英的語言複雜性，也是靈活多變、兼容並蓄的香港精神。影像的藝術創作，未知的冒險，一個文化事件，同樣是由異質接觸的遭遇而激活的複雜性，這個瞬間的或碰觸的複雜性，用曾御欽的語彙是：砰！一個作用力更為深廣的遭遇，構成了我們前後數個世代必須不斷重讀以重新瞭解自身認同的複雜性，那就是發生在十九世紀中葉，中國、日本跟西方的遭遇。汪暉對於「現代」的質詢，《現代中國思想的興起》以及本期這篇〈再思考〉，子安宣邦對於福澤諭吉《文明論之概略》的再精讀，都是對這個重大遭遇的綿延回應。每個回應本身都開啟了在歷史中想像過去、在當代投射未來的向度，也都寓含了一個多重指涉的「思想」或「文明」主體，或視野。汪暉的四冊《現代中國思想的興起》(2004)涉及的歷史解釋議題甚廣，知識譜系的規模甚大，如黃錦樹形容的，不折不扣是個關於中國現代性起源的大敘事。這部體系著作雖早已存在著批評、提問與回應，但顯然值得更多的探討與論辯。既然是關於四冊《現代中國思想的興起》，〈再思考〉不同於一篇需要專業審查的研究論文，編委會也難以設想能夠涵蓋這部著作全幅議題的回應人，於是我們的任務是邀請能夠就局部議題貢獻批評的評論。黃錦樹與甘懷真兩篇各有精采的論點。我們期待第六期能讀到後續的評論以及作者的回應。對於思想上具有重要性的文章， 不拘泥於匿名審查形式，組織公開而有意義的批評與回應，本期的嘗試也為本刊開啟了一個新的組稿類型：「思想論壇」(Forum)。子安宣邦〈福澤諭吉《文明論之概略》精讀〉，由陳瑋芬翻譯與介紹，乃本期繼第四期的第二次「思想翻譯」(Translations)稿類的嘗試。我們期待這些新稿類的具體呈現，對於潛在的作者與譯者有些鼓勵的作用。朱元鴻
