111 Places in Los Angeles that you must not miss by Laurel Moglen,Julia Posey Pdf

The ultimate insider's guide to Los Angeles Features interesting and unusual places not found in traditional travel guides 'In Los Angeles, everyone is a star.' - Denzel Washington For more than a century, seekers of sun and celebrity from around the world have flocked to this sprawling metropolis on the Pacific, which Dorothy Parker once described as '72 suburbs in search of a city.' But beyond the red-carpet reputation and Tinseltown trappings is a west coast wonderland teeming with unexpected cultural experiences, iconic architecture, gorgeous open spaces, quirky museums, hidden vistas, unconventional art, and obscure stories about the starlets, moguls, personalities, and players who have made Los Angeles their playground. This unusual guidebook explores 111 of the city's most interesting and unknown places and experiences: wander a serpentine path in a spiritual quest of your own making; channel your inner cowboy at a tried and true honky tonk bar; pay homage to the Dude at the bungalow where the big Lebowski lived; turn your car tires into musical instruments on the country's only 'musical' road; sleep with the ghosts of Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin; view a constellation of stars more vivid than anything Hollywood Boulevard has to offer. From the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Angelenos and vistors will fall in love with the real Los Angeles. Adventures beckon. Surprises await. Just imagine how much more scintillating your dinner-party storytelling will be... Laurel Moglen has worked for NPR stations in Los Angeles and created podcasts for organizations and companies including Travelocity covering what to do, see, and eat in cities around the US. Understanding the nuances of what gives a place its identity is her passion, and nowhere is it more fascinating, complicated, and mercurial than in Los Angeles, her home for 20 years. 111 Places in New Orleans that you must not miss by Sally Asher,Michael Murphy Pdf

Birthplace of Jazz, home to the world famous Mardi Gras, champion of voo-doo and vampires, purveyors of its own distinctive Creole and Cajun cuisines, New Orleans, once owned by France, then Spain, then France again, has a rich history that blends the unconventional with the orthodox to create a cultural collision unlike that found in ny other city. This insiders' guide to New Orleans is shaped by portraits of the less obvious, hidden treasures rarely seen by the 10 million tourists who visit 'The Big Easy' each year. From architecture that housed early jazz musicians and powerful madams; to bars that offer shot-and-a-haircut specials; to emblematic local eateries like Hansen's Sno Bliz and Killer Po'boys; to the best places to buy a chartreuse-colored beehive wig, Civil War cavalry saber, or some swamp-grass gris gris, 111 Places in New Orleans will ensure that you experience the musical, spiritual, historical, edible, and quite often sinful side of America's Most Interesting City. As noted musician and NOLA native Allen Toussaint once said, 'To get to New Orleans, you don't pass through anywhere else.' Sally Asher is a photographer and writer whose images have appeared in such publications as Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and New Orleans Magazine. She has been a photographer for Tulane University since 2008 and frequently lectures about New Orleans' history through the Louisiana State Museums. This is her third book about New Orleans. Michael Murphy has been in the book business for over 35 years. He spent 13 years with Random House, went onto run William Morrow as their Publisher, and then formed his own literary agency Max & Co. He is currently writing a trilogy of travel books about New Orleans for W.W. Norton, EAT DAT, HEAR DAT, and FEAR DAT.

The Image of the City by Kevin Lynch Pdf

The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.

Against Prediction by Bernard E. Harcourt Pdf

From random security checks at airports to the use of risk assessment in sentencing, actuarial methods are being used more than ever to determine whom law enforcement officials target and punish. And with the exception of racial profiling on our highways and streets, most people favor these methods because they believe they’re a more cost-effective way to fight crime. In Against Prediction, Bernard E. Harcourt challenges this growing reliance on actuarial methods. These prediction tools, he demonstrates, may in fact increase the overall amount of crime in society, depending on the relative responsiveness of the profiled populations to heightened security. They may also aggravate the difficulties that minorities already have obtaining work, education, and a better quality of life—thus perpetuating the pattern of criminal behavior. Ultimately, Harcourt shows how the perceived success of actuarial methods has begun to distort our very conception of just punishment and to obscure alternate visions of social order. In place of the actuarial, he proposes instead a turn to randomization in punishment and policing. The presumption, Harcourt concludes, should be against prediction.
