Software systems for wireless and mobile communications are a key component in pervasive computing and are crucial for the materialization of easy-to-use and intel- gent services that people can use ubiquitously. As indicated by its acronym (MOBILe Wireless MiddleWARE, Operating Systems, and Applications), these are the type of systems that form the topic of the MOBILWARE conferencing series. Wireless networking covers a variety of topics involving many challenges. The main concern of clustering approaches for mobile wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to prolong the battery life of the individual sensors and the network lifetime. For a successful clustering approach, the need of a powerful mechanism to safely elect a cluster head remains a challenging task in many research works that take into account the mobility of the network. In Mobile, Wireless and Sensor Networks: A Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency and Safety, the authors use an approach based on computing of the weight of each node in the network as the proposed technique to deal with this problem. They present a virtual laboratory platform (VLP) of baptized mercury, allowing students and researchers to make practical work (PW) on different aspects of mobile wireless sensor networks. The authors’ choice of WSNs is motivated mainly by the use of real experiments needed in most college courses on WSNs. These usual experiments, however, require an expensive investment and many nodes in the classroom. The platform presented here aims at showing the feasibility, the flexibility, and the reduced cost using the authors’ approach. The authors demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms that contribute to the familiarization of the learners in the field of WSNs. The book will be a valuable resource for students in networking studies as well as for faculty and researchers in this area.

This book discusses the fusion of mobile and WiFi network data with semantic technologies and diverse context sources for offering semantically enriched context-aware services in the telecommunications domain. It presents the OpenMobileNetwork as a platform for providing estimated and semantically enriched mobile and WiFi network topology data using the principles of Linked Data. This platform is based on the OpenMobileNetwork Ontology consisting of a set of network context ontology facets that describe mobile network cells as well as WiFi access points from a topological perspective and geographically relate their coverage areas to other context sources. The book also introduces Linked Crowdsourced Data and its corresponding Context Data Cloud Ontology, which is a crowdsourced dataset combining static location data with dynamic context information. Linked Crowdsourced Data supports the OpenMobileNetwork by providing the necessary context data richness for more sophisticated semantically enriched context-aware services. Various application scenarios and proof of concept services as well as two separate evaluations are part of the book. As the usability of the provided services closely depends on the quality of the approximated network topologies, it compares the estimated positions for mobile network cells within the OpenMobileNetwork to a small set of real-world cell positions. The results prove that context-aware services based on the OpenMobileNetwork rely on a solid and accurate network topology dataset. The book also evaluates the performance of the exemplary Semantic Tracking as well as Semantic Geocoding services, verifying the applicability and added value of semantically enriched mobile and WiFi network data.

Indoor localization is a research domain that aims to locate mobile devices or users in the indoor environments. More and more research has investigated to acquire the location information based upon existing Wi-Fi infrastructure. A technique of using current Wi-Fi data and a fingerprint database containing Wi-Fi fingerprints of desired locations for localization is known as Wi-Fi fingerprinting. Most current approaches for Wi-Fi fingerprinting depend on labor-intensive and time-consuming site surveys by professional staff or users to generate a fingerprint database of desired locations. Moreover, these approaches are not satisfactory for long-term localization of mobile devices in practice due to the costly and continuous update of the fingerprint database. In this thesis, we propose an approach to the indoor localization problem, in which we combine the Wi-Fi fingerprinting technique and the place learning technique to learn and update the Wi-Fi fingerprints of significant locations in an unsupervised manner. Significant locations are locations a user spent at least for a while (e.g., 10 minutes) and are most important and highly frequented in people’s daily lives. The conventional approaches use labeled Wi-Fi data intentionally collected by professional staff or users and learn Wi-Fi fingerprints of desired locations. Instead, the proposed approach uses unlabeled Wi-Fi data collected in a user’s daily life and learns Wi-Fi fingerprints of significant locations related to user’s daily trajectory and activities. We implement an autonomous indoor localization system WHERE based on the proposed approach. The system can automatically learn and update Wi-Fi fingerprints of significant locations, and determine the location of the mobile device when it returns to the learned locations. Moreover, we evaluate various measures of performance, in term of the location accuracy, the computational time, the power consumption, the size of a fingerprint database, and the system reliability in a practical use. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed autonomous indoor localization system WHERE is a reliable system for efficient use – being very low-cost to set up and maintain, and showing satisfactory localization performance.
