The Authentic Swing by Steven Pressfield Pdf

The Story Behind THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE If you've read his books THE WAR OF ART and TURNING PRO, you know that for thirty years Steven Pressfield (GATES OF FIRE, THE AFGHAN CAMPAIGN etc.) wrote spec novel after spec novel before any publisher took him seriously. How did he finally break through? Ignoring just about every rule of commercial book publishing, Pressfield's "first" novel not only became a major bestseller (over 250,000 copies sold), it was adapted into a feature film directed by Robert Redford and starring Matt Damon, Will Smith, and Charlize Theron. Where did he get the idea? What magical something did THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE have that his previous manuscripts lacked? Why did Pressfield decide to write a novel when he already had a well established screenwriting career? How does writing a publishable novel really work? Taking a page from John Steinbeck's classic JOURNAL OF A NOVEL, Steven Pressfield offers answers for these and scores of other practical writing questions in THE AUTHENTIC SWING.

Anna Vogel is a world-class expert in influence techniques. In spring 1941, as war rages between Nazi Germany and the United Kingdom, two other world-class influencers realise they need her help. The first is her employer, Joseph Goebbels, Germany's Minister of Propaganda, who is desperate to stop a fellow Nazi leader, Rudolf Hess, revealing devastating secrets to the British. The second is Winston Churchill, the UK's Prime Minister, who wants to recruit Anna as a spy. But Churchill first needs Anna's help to save his wife, who has been diagnosed with a complex brain tumour. Only one surgeon has the requisite skills to operate, but he is German, based in Berlin and a fervent Nazi. Can such a man be persuaded to come to London? Should he be? Anna suddenly finds herself in a position to help or destroy the careers of two of the world's most powerful leaders. What will she do with such power? How can she protect her own secrets and ambitions? To survive, she will need to face the toughest challenge any influence expert could imagine: influencing herself. Influencers is a thriller where the most powerful weapons are not the ones that explode, injure or kill. They are the ones that answer their victims' deepest psychological needs. Creativity, Inc. (The Expanded Edition) by Ed Catmull,Amy Wallace Pdf

The co-founder and longtime president of Pixar updates and expands his 2014 New York Times bestseller on creative leadership, reflecting on the management principles that built Pixar’s singularly successful culture, and on all he learned during the past nine years that allowed Pixar to retain its creative culture while continuing to evolve. “Might be the most thoughtful management book ever.”—Fast Company For nearly thirty years, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as the Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, and WALL-E, which have gone on to set box-office records and garner eighteen Academy Awards. The joyous storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is. Here, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable. As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to make the first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream as a Ph.D. student, and then forged a partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever. The essential ingredient in that movie’s success—and in the twenty-five movies that followed—was the unique environment that Catmull and his colleagues built at Pixar, based on philosophies that protect the creative process and defy convention, such as: • Give a good idea to a mediocre team and they will screw it up. But give a mediocre idea to a great team and they will either fix it or come up with something better. • It’s not the manager’s job to prevent risks. It’s the manager’s job to make it safe for others to take them. • The cost of preventing errors is often far greater than the cost of fixing them. • A company’s communication structure should not mirror its organizational structure. Everybody should be able to talk to anybody. Creativity, Inc. has been significantly expanded to illuminate the continuing development of the unique culture at Pixar. It features a new introduction, two entirely new chapters, four new chapter postscripts, and changes and updates throughout. Pursuing excellence isn’t a one-off assignment but an ongoing, day-in, day-out, full-time job. And Creativity, Inc. explores how it is done.

Motherhood in Mexican Cinema, 1941-1991 by Isabel Arredondo Pdf

How were femininity and motherhood understood in Mexican cinema from the 1940s to the early 1990s? Film analysis, interviews with filmmakers, academic articles and film reviews from newspapers are used to answer the question and trace the changes in such depictions. Images of mothers in films by so-called third-wave filmmakers (Busi Cortes, Maria Novaro, Dana Rotberg and Marisa Sistach) are contrasted with those in Mexican classical films (1935-1950) and films from the 1970s and 1980s. There are some surprising conclusions. The most important restrictions in the depiction of mothers in classical cinema came not from the strict sexual norms of the 1940s but in reactions to women shown as having autonomous identities. Also, in contrast to classical films, third-wave films show a woman's problems within a social dimension, making motherhood political--in relation not to militancy within the left but to women's issues. Third-wave films approach the problems of Latin American society as those of individuals differentiated by gender, sexuality and ethnicity; in such films mothers are citizens directly affected by laws, economic policies and cultural beliefs.

Cinema-(to)-graphy by Ellen Bishop Pdf

Film is simply too big and too influential a mass medium to ignore. Surprisingly enough, although film is already a staple in many composition classrooms, little has been written about its uses-leaving many of us uncertain of how to proceed. Cinema-(to)-Graphy takes you inside some of those classrooms, offering new ideas on integrating film and other visual media with student writing. Ellen Bishop divides the book into four sections based on where the authors locate themselves in the field of film and writing. These essays, if anything, resist easy categorization; all of them begin to unfold both theoretical and practical questions that arise from the conversation about film and writing, cultural studies, and undergraduate students. These instructors offer special insight into both course structures and materials, and the methods through which they make use of them. Best of all, they offer new strategies to help students become critical thinkers who can responsibly speak to and read their media-saturated world, and who can identify and work with the problems posed by language. This anthology will be of great use to university and college teachers of all ranks, especially graduate student teachers interested in integrating film into their composition classrooms.
