Just a Dog by Arnold Arluke Pdf

Psychiatrists define cruelty to animals as a psychological problem or personality disorder. Legally, animal cruelty is described by a list of behaviors. In Just a Dog, Arnold Arluke argues that our current constructs of animal cruelty are decontextualized—imposed without regard to the experience of the groups committing the act. Yet those who engage in animal cruelty have their own understandings of their actions and of themselves as actors. In this fascinating book, Arluke probes those understandings and reveals the surprising complexities of our relationships with animals. Just a Dog draws from interviews with more than 250 people, including humane agents who enforce cruelty laws, college students who tell stories of childhood abuse of animals, hoarders who chronically neglect the welfare of many animals, shelter workers who cope with the ethics of euthanizing animals, and public relations experts who use incidents of animal cruelty for fundraising purposes. Through these case studies, Arluke shows how the meaning of "cruelty" reflects and helps to create identities and ideologies.

Placing Animals in the Neolithic by Arkadiusz Marciniak Pdf

This book presents a new perspective on the social milieu of the Early and Middle Neolithic in Central Europe as viewed through relations between humans and animals, food acquisition and consumption, as well as refuse disposal practices. Based on animal bone assemblages from a wide range of sites from a period of over 2,000 years originating in both the North European Plain lowlands and the loess uplands, the evidence explored in the book represents the Linear Band Pottery Culture (LBK), the Lengyel Culture, and the Funnel Beaker Culture (TRB) allowing us to follow the dynamic development of early farmers from their emergence in the area north of the Carpathians up to their consolidation and stabilization in this new territory.

The Animal Fable in Science Fiction and Fantasy by Bruce Shaw Pdf

Though animal stories and fables stretch back into the antiquity of ancient India, Persia, Greece and Rome, the reasons for writing them and their resonance for readers (and listeners) remain consistent to the present. This work argues that they were essential sources of amusement and instruction—and were also often profoundly unsettling. Such authors in the realm of the animal fable as Tolkien, Freud, Voltaire, Bakhtin, Cordwainer Smith, Karel Čapek, Vladimir Propp, and many more are discussed.

For some, the issue of animal rights is merely an attempt to improve conditions of animals used for clothing, food, and other products, while others believe animals should be granted the same legal rights afforded to humans. Animal Rights, Revised Edition provides an overview of the history of the animal rights movement and reactions to it, as well as the issues of animal experimentation, conditions on factory farms, laboratory animals, animals in entertainment, hunting, and the actions of those involved in the animal rights debate. New content includes such documents as the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act of 2006 and contemporary court cases such as Animal Legal Defense Fund v. Glickman. These documents provide both past and present perspectives on the issue and plot a course for future debate about animal rights. A comprehensive and up-to-date overview essay, capsule biographies, a large annotated bibliography, a chronology of significant events, organization and agency listings, and a glossary all combine to make this an ideal first-stop reference to animal rights.Coverage includes: Whether medical testing performed on animals is ethicalWhether animals should be banned from circuses and other forms of entertainmentHow threats against investors in companies that participate in animal drug testing should be handle

Animal House on Acid by Beverly A. Potter Pdf

ANIMAL HOUSE ON ACID is a memoir by Beverly Potter, a neighbor of the “most notorious housing unit on the face of the Earth.” Barrington Hall, a large student-run co-op on the Southside of the University a few blocks off of Telegraph Avenue, was Berkeley’s last outpost of the ‘60s. Barringtonians, as they called themselves, held fast to the culture of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll long after it had ceased to be fashionable, and clung to the sanctity of individual expression—even to the point of covering up not only illegal but genuinely harmful acts with a cloak of silence, know as “Onngh Yonngh”, which stated: Those who know, don't tell' those who tell, don't know. Inside Barrington Hall, youth rebellion never grew old, because each year it was replenished with a new crop of eighteen-year-olds, sorry to have missed the ‘60s and glad to find a small chunk of it still alive just down the street from People’s Park on Dwight Way. Barrington became a victim of its own mythology: with a house culture dedicated to outrage, it eventually outraged all, even its natural allies. Established as a co-op in the 1930s, by 1980 Barrington had become a continuing disaster for the USCA [University Students Coop Association]. Known internationally for live punk rock, LSD parties called “wine dinners” featuring acid-spiked wine punch, open drug use, heroin use and over-doses, crashers and haven for under-age run-aways, activism and anarchy, raucous parties, kids going off the four-story roof, along with disputes with neighbors and investigations by the City Council. Barrington sapped the patience of everyone involved. Finally after a neighbor group took Barrington to arbitration, and three City investigations, and PACT - Parents and Children Together attempts to control the raucous behavior, Potter filed a lawsuit. Then the death threats rained down upon her. Barrington Hall was boarded up in March 1990 -- 24 years ago. Yet, it’s spirit and romance lives on. Today, in July 2014, there is a large memorial poster in the window of Rasputin Music on Telegraph Avenue honoring Barrington Hall, calling it a “petri dish of early San Francisco Bay Area Punk Rock.” [https://www.flickr.com/photos/wallyg/9583462218/] Dead Kennedys, Green Day, Primus and other popular Punk groups played regularly at Barrington. There are several chat sites developed to Barrington along with annual reunions. Les Claypool of the Punk group, Primus, wrote one of the many songs about Barrington. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNrTKhGbqi4] Barrington was known for its floor to ceiling murals through-out the building -- all four floors. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqMVyNq189o] Barringtonians routinely painted graffiti messages to and about Potter on the outside of the building, including "Beverly gives good head" which was listed in her lawsuit as a cause of action. ANIMAL HOUSE ON ACID is packed with side stories. One is about the dope book publishers suing the dope den. Sebastian Orfali and Beverly Potter, publishers of Ronin Publishing, which arose the ashes of the 1970’s break-through And/Or Press, were neighbors -- literally under the windows of Barrington. When the media learned that Ronin (and And/Or before it) published marijuana and psychedelics subjects, a KCBS commentator remarked about Orfali, “Isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black?” The 1989 photo featured in the Barrington Hall Wikipedia is 30 feet from Potter's house. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrington_Hall_(Berkeley,_California)] In 1990, Barrington Hall was to be closed for good. 18 students - "the holdovers" - refused to leave and were being evicted. March 3, 1990, a poetry reading escalated into a full blown riot -- with Berkeley Riot Squad trucks sweeping the streets and riot police swinging clubs. There was a 20 foot bonfire in front of the Haste Street entrance - and Potter's house. ANIMAL HOUSE ON ACID is Potter's memoir of a truly long, strange trip, which she tells in a scrapbook-like format, composed of local newspaper stories, City reports, incident notes, posters, photographs, stitched together with Potter's retelling of wild tales -- even by Berkeley standards.

The Oxford Handbook of Animal Organization Studies by Assistant Professor in Management and Organization Linda Tallberg,Linda Tallberg,Lindsay Hamilton Pdf

Just as climate change and environmental sustainability have become growing concerns in public discourse, so too have they become a persistent focus in business and organization studies. It is increasingly acknowledged that humans and animals do not dwell in separate spheres; rather, they are entangled in a number of commercial or organizational settings, and organization theory needs to respond more comprehensively to this more-than-human shift in outlook. Important questions continue to arise about the nature of contemporary organization and organizing practices: who are these for? Who benefits from the operation of increasingly globalized capital markets? What place is there for the nonhuman animals in all this organization? What place is there for multispecies companionship, solidarity, and mutual value creation today and in the future, if any? This volume brings together interdisciplinary work on human-animal relationships within business, management, and organization for the first time. It maps the contours of an emerging new discipline, here termed 'Animal Organization Studies', touching on the politics, theory, and empirical experience of multispecies life-worlds. Spanning a number of disciplinary approaches including critical geography, critical management studies, social studies of science, and human-animal studies, the volume highlights the contact points as well as the tensions in humanity's relationship with a range of animal species and habitats. It holds relevance for those investigating debates around humanism and its futures; environmental and sustainability matters; the experience of working with and on animals, and the future of animal consumption and production.

Filthy Fictions by Monica Chiu Pdf

Filthy Fictions addresses Asian American literature by women to explore and explode the sedimented and solidified meanings we have created about 'Asian American' and 'dirt' through dialogues that not only cross disciplinary and institutional formations and borders, but also question the very borders and territories upon which these arguments may be founded. Expertly questioning the construction of the ethnic body, the book discusses critical discourses in ethnic and feminist studies around the topic of identity (re)production and transnational representation.
