A Compendium of the Mahayana by Asanga Pdf

The first complete English translation of Asanga's Mahayanasamgraha, the most important and comprehensive Indian Yogacara text, and all its available Indian commentaries. Winner of the Khyentse Foundation Prize for Outstanding Translation. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha, published here with its Indian and Tibetan commentaries in three volumes, presents virtually everything anybody might want to know about the Yogācāra School of mahāyāna Buddhism. It discusses in detail the nature and operation of the eight kinds of consciousness, the often-misunderstood notion of “mind only” (cittamātra), dependent origination, the cultivation of the path and its fruition in terms of the four wisdoms, and the three bodies (kāyas) of a buddha. Volume 1 presents the translation of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha along with a commentary by Vasubandhu. The introduction gives an overview of the text and its Indian and Tibetan commentaries, and explains in detail two crucial elements of the Yogācāra view: the ālaya-consciousness and the afflicted mind (kliṣṭamanas). Volume 2 presents translations of the commentary by Asvabhāva and an anonymous Indian commentary on the first chapter of the text. These translations are supplemented in the endnotes by excerpts from Tibetan commentaries and related passages in other Indian and Chinese Yogācāra works. Volume 3 includes appendices with excerpts from other Indian and Chinese Yogācāra texts and supplementary materials on major Yogācāra topics in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha.

Abhidharmasamuccaya by Asanga Pdf

There are two systems of Abhidharma, according to Tibetan tradition, lower and higher. The lower system is taught in the Abhidharmakosa, while the higher system is taught in the Abhidharmasamuccaya. Thus the two books form a complementary pair. Asanga, author of the Abhidharmasamuccaya, is founder of the Yogacara school of Mahayana Buddhism. His younger brother Vasubandhu wrote the Abhidharmakosa before Asanga converted him to Mahayana Buddhism. Yet the Kosa is written in verse, usual for Mahayana treatises, while the Samuccaya follows the traditional prose question and answer style of the older Pali Abhidharma texts. Walpola Rahula, in preparing his 1971 French translation of this Mahayana text from the Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan, has brought to bear on its many technical terms his extensive background and great expertise in the Pali canon. J. W. de Jong says in his review of this work:"Rahula deserves our gratitude for his excellent translation of this difficult text." Sara Boin-Webb is well known for her accurate English translations of Buddhist books from the French. She has now made accessible in English Rahula's French translation, the first into a modern language, of this fundamental text. "...an important book for any serious library in Buddhist Studies..." --Choice

Outlines of Mahayana Buddhism by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki Pdf

Outlines of Mahayana Buddhism by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki. The object of this book is twofold: (1) To refute the many wrong opinions which are entertained by Western critics concerning the fundamental teachings of Mahayana Buddhism ; (2) To awake interest among scholars of comparative religion in the development of the religious sentiment and faith as exemplified by the growth of one of the most powerful spiritual forces in the world. The book is therefore at once popular and scholarly. It is popular in the sense that it tries to expose the fallacy of the general attitude assumed by other religionists towards Mahayanism. It aims to be scholarly, on the other hand, when it endeavors to expound some of the most salient features of the doctrine, historically and systematically. Reproduction of 1907 Edition.

Summary of the Great Vehicle, The by Asaṅga Pdf

The Summary of the Great Vehicle is perhaps the most representative text of the Yogacara school of Mahayana Buddhism. It presents the classic argument for the basic Yogacara themes on conscious interiority, attempting to reinterpret within this context the general Mahayana teachings of emptiness and dependent co-arising. It then proceeds to explain the etiology if imaginative illusion, sketch its reversal by offering an explanation of the nature of conversion, champion the recovered insight into depended co-arising in terms of the converted other-dependent pattern of consciousness, and thus allow for a valid, if limited, role for language-formed, conventional discourse, both commonsense and theoretical.

Mahayana Buddhism by Paul Williams Pdf

Originating in India, Mahayana Buddhism spread across Asia, becoming the prevalent form of Buddhism in Tibet and East Asia. Over the last twenty-five years Western interest in Mahayana has increased considerably, reflected both in the quantity of scholarly material produced and in the attraction of Westerners towards Tibetan Buddhism and Zen. Paul Williams’ Mahayana Buddhism is widely regarded as the standard introduction to the field, used internationally for teaching and research and has been translated into several European and Asian languages. This new edition has been fully revised throughout in the light of the wealth of new studies and focuses on the religion’s diversity and richness. It includes much more material on China and Japan, with appropriate reference to Nepal, and for students who wish to carry their study further there is a much-expanded bibliography and extensive footnotes and cross-referencing. Everyone studying this important tradition will find Williams’ book the ideal companion to their studies.

Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... HYMNS OF MAHAYANA FAITH. DHARMAKAYA (TATHAGATA).1 In all beings there abideth the Dharmakaya; With all virtues dissolved in it, it liveth in eternal calmness. It knoweth nor birth nor death, coming nor going; Not one, not two; not being, not becoming; Yet present everywhere in worlds of beings: This is what is perceived by all Tathagatas. All virtues, material and immaterial, Dependent on the Dharmak&ya, are eternally pure in it. Like unto the sky is the ultimate nature of the Dharmakaya; Far away from the six dusts, it is defilement-free. Of no form and devoid of all attributes is the Dharmakaya, In which are void both actor and action: The Dharmakaya of all Buddhas, thus beyond comprehension, Quells all the struggles of sophistry and dialectics, Distances all the efforts of intellection, Thoughts all are dead in it, and suchness alone abideth. THE DHARMAKAYA OF TATHAGATA. 2 In all the worlds over the ten quarters, O ye, sentient creatures living there, Behold the most venerable of men and gods, Whose spiritual Dharma-body is immaculate and pure. As through the power of one mind, A host of thoughts is evolved: So from one Dharma-body of Tathagata, Are produced all the Buddha-bodies. In Bodhi nothing dual there existeth, Nor is any thought of self present: The Dharma-body, undefined and non-dual, In its full splendor manifesteth itself everywhere. Its ultimate reality is like unto the vastness of space; Its manifested forms are like unto magic shows; Its virtues excellent are inexhaustible, This, indeed, the spiritual state of Buddhas only. All the Buddhas of the present, past, and future, Each one of them is an issue of the Dharma-body immaculate and pure; Responding to the needs of sentient creatures, They manifest themselves...
