I thought it proper to give a Ihort Account of the faid Duties. No 40.---Prifage and Butlerage. THESE Dudes were originally the only Cuftom that was payable upon the Importation of Wines, and were taken and received byr virtue of the Regal Prerogative, for the proper Ufe of the Crown: But for many Years pan there having been granted by Parliament, Subfidies or Aids to the Kings oi England, and thofe Duties not repealed but (a) confirm'd; they have been pleafed to grant the fame away to iome Nobleman, who by Virtue of fuch Grant or Patent is to enjoy the full Benefit and Advantage thereof, and may cauie the fame to be levied and collefted in the fame Manner as the Kings them-felves might and were formerly wont to do. (i) Puisage is a certain Taking or Purveyance of Wines to the King's Ufe, out of every Ship bringing in Wines belonging to the Natives of England, except the Merchants of London, the Cinque Parti, Southampton and Cbefler, who are exempted by particular Charters: To be taken upon the breaking of Bujk, or unloading any Part of the Ship's Cargo, according to the whole Quantity on board, though there be not more than one Ton landed. This Duty is either Single or Double. Single Prisage is one Ton, and is due in Kind, when the Quantity imported amounts to or exceeds ten Tom, but is under twenty...
