Reconceptualizing Physical Education by Ang Chen Pdf

Physical education curricula evolved to emphasize physical training, personal hygiene, character development, fitness development, sports competency, and health. These emphases led to different ways to conceptualize the curricula for primary and secondary schools. This book raises a need to re-conceptualize the physical education curriculum and proposes a life-scan perspective for physical education curriculum conceptualization. Reconceptualizing Physical Education proposes a conceptual framework to focus on the life journey of physical activity, which is guided by the monist perspective and a lifelong approach to physical literacy. Section I of the book lays out important theoretical articulation for a two-dimensional framework with the goal of educating the learner to take a lifelong perspective to personal health and physically active lifestyles. Section II presents curriculum frameworks designed for primary schools and secondary schools. In each framework chapter, the details of content and learning tasks are discussed in terms of the two-dimensional functions. Each framework may be used directly for curriculum development. The book is intended for curriculum scholars and researchers in physical education, graduate students in health and physical education curriculum studies, and teachers in physical education and health education. It may also be of interest of researchers and graduate students in kinesiology fields and public health.

Meaningful Physical Education by Tim Fletcher,Déirdre Ní Chróinín,Douglas Gleddie,Stephanie Beni Pdf

This book outlines an approach to teaching and learning in physical education that prioritises meaningful experiences for pupils, using case studies to illustrate how practitioners have implemented this approach across international contexts. Prioritising the idea of meaningfulness positions movement as a primary way to enrich the quality of young people’s lives, shifting the focus of physical education programs to better suit the needs of contemporary young learners and resist the utilitarian health-oriented views of physical education that currently predominate in many schools and policy documents. The book draws on the philosophy of physical education to articulate the main rationale for prioritising meaningful experiences, before identifying potential and desired outcomes for participants. It highlights the distinct characteristics of meaningful physical education and its content, and outlines teaching and learning principles and strategies, supported by pedagogical cases that show what meaningful physical education can look like in school-based teaching and in higher education-based teacher education. With an emphasis on good pedagogical practice, this is essential reading for all pre-service and in-service physical education teachers or coaches working in youth sport.

Humanism and Behaviorism in Physical Education by Robert E. Gensemer,Robert J. Krajewski,Robert Baird Shuman Pdf

This book offers analyses, applications, and a combined form of behaviorism and humanism as they relate to the teaching of physical education. The composition of the two systems is explored pragmatically, with an overall objective of assisting teachers in their endeavors to make teaching and learning more efficient, effective, and rewarding. The differences between the two philosophies are apparent: humanism assigns the responsibility for learning to the student, while behaviorism assigns the responsibility for learning to the teacher. Humanism is concerned with self-directed activity such as creativity and self-discovery. Applying humanism to a physical education course entails creating an environment of psychological, intellectual, and physical (movement) freedom. The behaviorist model of teaching represents a branch of psychology which relies on a stimulus-response view of education. The central idea of behaviorism is that behavior is affected by its consequences, and the future occurrence of behaviors is influenced by the way in which the environment (usually people) responds to those behaviors. An effective combination of both systems, which at first glance seems antithetical, would use the following steps: (1) identify specific target behaviors; (2) select the educational experiences; (3) organize the educational experiences; and (4) evaluate the effect. Physical Education Teacher Education in a Global Policy Space by Mary O'Sullivan,Melissa Parker Pdf

This book seeks to focus attention on physical education teacher education (PETE) by building the knowledge base and broadening the geographical, theoretical, and innovative writing about PETE, PETE teacher educators, and those who shape and experience PETE. Teacher competence is a major factor in influencing student learning. Teacher educator competence is also a key factor in preparing high-quality teachers for schools. Therefore, there is a high value in focussing on who teacher educators are and which knowledge bases can inform careful program design as well as pedagogical and assessment strategies around the intended processes of teacher learning. Developed around a framework for studying teacher education, insights into two key elements of teacher education are used to structure the content of this book. Five of the six chapters focus on pedagogies of teacher education, while the last chapter explores the lives of an international cohort of teacher educators and their motives for engagement in research. Based on elements presented and those provided in the framework an agenda exploring pressing issues for teacher education is posed. This book was originally published as a special issue of Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education.
