A Contest with the Night by Lee Wright Pdf

In a country lost to history, where a kingdom seeks to exact total power over its subjects, a young woman of peculiar vision is driven to take a stand against her king after the deaths of her parents, and the introduction of a powerful black magic capable of controlling the very wills of the country's people. This young woman, a countess named Hope, must raise an army from among those few in the kingdom who are able to resist the black magic, a band of treacherous mercenaries from beyond the nation's borders, and a monster who was thrice killed. But victory will be hard won, and success will not come without great cost. The king's duke, a ruthless man who will stop at nothing to maintain order in the kingdom, commands an army which he will not refrain from unleashing against any of the kingdom's subjects who defy him. Through the crack of muskets, the turning of tables, and the testing of virtue, A Contest with the Night tells a tale of hope, love, and courage against security, cruelty, and complacency. It is a story for all people, and a reminder that the freedom to live rightly is worth any cost or conflict.

The Book of Job : A Contest of Moral Imaginations by Candler School of Theology Carol A. Newsom Professor of Old Testament Emory University Pdf

Carol Newsom illuminates the relation between the aesthetic forms of Job and the claims made by its various characters. Her innovative approach makes possible a new understanding of the unity of the book that rejects its dismantling in historical criticism and the flattening of the text that characterizes many final form readings. Additionally, she rehabilitates the moral perspectives represented by certain voices of the book that modern critics have treated with disdain.

The Poetry Contest in Six Hundred Rounds (2 vols) by Thomas E. McAuley Pdf

For the monumental Poetry Competition in Six Hundred Rounds (Roppyakuban uta’awase), twelve poets each provided one hundred waka poems, fifty on seasonal topics and fifty on love, which were matched, critiqued by the participants and judged by Fujiwara no Shunzei, the premiere poet of his age. Its critical importance is heightened by the addition of a lengthy Appeal (chinjō) against Shunzei’s judgements by the conservative poet and monk, Kenshō. It is one of the key texts for understanding poetic and critical practice in late twelfth century Japan, and of the conflict between conservative and innovative poets. The Competition and Appeal are presented here for the first time in complete English translation with accompanying commentary and explanatory notes by Thomas McAuley.

But when she goes to the library to return it, she's told that the book never belonged there. Curious, she starts to read the stories: tales of strange incidents in nearby towns, of journal entries chronicling endless, twisting pumpkin vines, birthday parties gone awry, and cursed tarot decks. Scum Valley by Matthew Ellks Pdf

This book follows the local boardriding culture through a period of decadence and high times. It is the first book of a trilogy about the challenges that faced the subterranean surfing culture as it began losing its heritage to the yuppies who took advantage of negative gearing in the late 80s and started buying up Bondi. As property values and rates climbed, school enrollments fell and so started the decline of the working class folk of 'Scum Valley'. Us surfers used to call the beach 'Scum Valley' because of the old stink pipe at north that used to pump raw sewerage out into the ocean for us to surf in. We valued street credibility above all else and the community was very tight considering it's close location to such underworld locations as Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and the CBD in general. Being a city beach meant that a colourful cross-section of characters graced our town with the millions of other tourists and beach goers. The story has a David and Goliath twist to it as a rich kid waltzes into town and sets up a surf shop and begins winning friends and influencing people. A staunch local named Dan has a run in with him and so starts a feud that lasts for a decade (Span of the 3 books). Dan eventually opens his own shop and the fallout between rival surf shop clubs sends ripples through the beach. It divides opinions and sets a precedent for ongoing battles that are fought in the streets and in the water.
