A Course of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by James Hannay Pdf

Excerpt from A Course of English LiteratureThe present book is based upon a series of papers contributed some years ago to a popular periodical. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. English Literature and the Classics (Classic Reprint) by G. S. Gordon Pdf

Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools (Classic Reprint) by J. Logie Robertson Pdf

Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Robert Huntington Fletcher Pdf

Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth. Illustrations of English Literature by Charles Ebenezer Moyse Pdf

Excerpt from Illustrations of English Literature: First Year Course It has very often come into my mind what wise men there formerly were throughout England, belonging both to sacred and secular orders, llld how happy were the times then throughout England; and how the kings who had power over the people in those days obeyed God and his ministers; and how they preserved both their peace and their morals and their rule at home, and also enlarged their country and how they sped both in war and wisdom; and also how eager the ecclesiastical orders were both in teaching and learning, and in all the services they had to perform to God and how wisdom and learning were sought in this land from without, and how we should have to obtain them now front abroad if we had to acquire them. So com pletely had learning fallen away in England that there were very few on this side of Humber who could understand their church services in English, or indeed translate a letter from Latin into English and I think there were not many beyond Humber. So few of them were there that I cannot bethink me of a single one south of the Thames when I came to the throne. God be thanked that we have any supply of teachers now. When I remembered this, then I wondered very, very much at the good and wise men who formerly lived throughout England and had learned all books thoroughly, because they did not desire to translate any part of them into their own tongue. But then I soon answered myself and said, They did not think that men would ever be so careless in teaching, and learning so decayed; of set purpose they neglected to do so, and desired that there might be more wisdom in the land, the more languages we knew. The Masters of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Stephen Gwynn Pdf

Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has therefore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge possessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. The main criterion which has regulated the selection of names is public fame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Five Short Courses of Reading in English Literature by Caleb Thomas Winchester Pdf

Excerpt from Five Short Courses of Reading in English Literature: With Biographical and Critical References These courses of reading were prepared originally for college students, and were used for several years by classes under my instruction. It is thought that, as now printed, they may be of service not only to other teachers but to reading clubs, and to any readers who are beginning a systematic study of our literature. It is evident that this little manual is intended as a guide to the general reader or the beginner, and not for the advanced student of literature. The courses are, as they are named, short. Only so much reading has been assigned to each one as it has been found practica ble for a college student to do thoroughly in connection with an elementary study of literary history extending through one year. Each course is, however, followed by a list of Additional Reading for readers who have time and inclination to make a somewhat more thorough study of the period it covers; and it is believed that the five courses, taken together with the supplementary lists, will represent not very inadequately the nature and progress of English literature from the beginning of the Eliza bethan period to the present day.
