A Critical Introduction to the New Testament (Classic Reprint) by Arthur S. Peake Pdf

Excerpt from A Critical Introduction to the New Testament Man has no deeper or wider interest than theology; none deeper, for however much he may change, he never loses his love of the many questions it covers; and none wider, for under whatever law he may live he never escapes from its spacious shade; nor does he ever find that it speaks to him in vain or uses a voice that fails to reach him. Once the present writer was talking with a friend who has equal fame as a statesman and a man of letters, and he said, "Every day I live, Politics, which are affairs of Man and Time, interest me less, while Theology, which is an affair of God and Eternity, interests me more." As with him, so with many, though the many feel that their interest is in theology and not in dogma. Dogma, they know, is but a series of resolutions framed by a council or parliament, which they do not respect any the more because the parliament was composed of ecclesiastically-minded persons; while the theology which so interests them is a discourse touching God, though the Being so named is the God man conceived as not only related to himself and his world but also as rising ever higher with the notions of the self and the world. A Critical Introduction to the New Testament by Carl R. Holladay Pdf

This book introduces the New Testament in two senses: it not only provides basic literary and historical information on each of the twenty-seven writings but also orients readers to the religious, theological, and ethical issues related to the message and meaning of Jesus Christ. The overall goal is to help interested readers of the New Testament become informed, responsible interpreters of these writings and thereby enrich their personal faith and understanding. By giving special emphasis to how the New Testament has helped shape the church’s identity and theological outlook throughout the centuries, as well as the role it has played within the broader cultures of both East and West, this introduction also seeks to assist readers in exercising creative, informed leadership within their own communities of faith and in bringing a deeper understanding of early Christianity to their conversations with the wider public. Along with separate chapters devoted to each New Testament writing, there are chapters explaining how this collection of texts emerged as uniquely authoritative witnesses to the church’s faith; why they were recognized as canonical whereas other early Christian writings were not; how the four canonical Gospels are related to one another, including a discussion of the Synoptic Problem; how the Jesus tradition––his teachings, stories from his ministry, and the accounts of his suffering, death and resurrection––originated and developed into Gospels written in narrative form; and how the Gospels relate to Jesus Christ as he was and is. Also included is a chapter on the writings of Paul and how they emerged as a collection of authoritative texts for the church. This chapter includes a discussion of ancient letter-writing, special considerations for interpreting the Pauline writings, and Paul’s decisive influence within the history of the church and western culture.

Excerpt from A Critical Introduction to the Old Testament But tradition is no longer really accepted even by conservative scholars they may, indeed, maintain, for example, that the Pentateuch is the work of Moses, but they recognise at the same time that it has received additions from later hands than his, additions, too, of considerably greater extent than the record of Moses' death, which even Jewish tradition admitted, though not unanimously, to have been written by another. A General Historico-Critical Introduction to the Old Testament (Classic Reprint) by Heinrich Andreas Cristoph Hävernick Pdf

Excerpt from A General Historico-Critical Introduction to the Old Testament The work of which a translation is now presented to the British Public was the mature production of a theologian distinguished by that vast and varied learning which may be regarded as peculiarly characteristic of the modern German divines, and at the same time. Imbued with that reverence for the Bible as the Word of God, and that lively apprehension of its spiritual truths, which unhappily are too often found wanting in that quarter. I have undertaken, he says in his preface, to write this work from that stand-point which, through God's grace, has been showed to me - from the inward and firm conviction that the object of investigation is God's holy word, given to mankind sunk in sin and misery, for the purpose of guiding them in the way of salvation and peace. W'hosoever has, through the mercy of the Lord, been led so as to have learned to understand at his hand the word of life, and through this has been not only enlightened, but sanctified and blessed, cannot but feel constrained to utter, according to the calling, and in the measure vouchsafed to him by the Lord, a testimony for the grace which has been displayed even unto him. As it is written, I believe therefore I speak, ' so the theologian, the servant of the Church of Jesus Christ, knows that it is impossible to construct a theological science which is not founded on the truth - more particularly on the truth as revealed in the Word and his desire and most zealous endeavour, in keeping with this, is to erect on this basis a living edifice of science, the corner-stone of which shall be that besides which no other can be laid by any man. Such an one knows also that he thus labours not in the service of man, and on a vain and profitless work, but in the service of the Head of the Church, who has placed him as a steward of the mysteries of God, that he may be found faithful in the day of the appearing of Jesus Christ. The New Testament by Edwin D. Freed Pdf

The purpose of this introductory text is to help the interested reader to learn about and engage in critical study of the New Testament. It has been written for students and other lay people with no formal training in New Testament studies. Although it is not intended to be a 'popular' treatment - the kind of book that usually oversimplifies material and presents it so rapidly that it rarely challenges thoughtful readers - it avoids the technical language used in more advanced work. Its aim is to inform, not to convert; to educate, not to indoctrinate, and it has been designed for those willing to go beyond denominational or romantic approaches. First comes a general introduction to subjects important for understanding the settings of the New Testament writings. The three parts which follow deal with Jesus and the first three Gospels; Acts and Paul and his letters; and writings from times of oppression and controversy, the context in which the Fourth Gospel is studied. There are useful figures and diagrams to illustrate points relating to sources and style, and illustrations where these are relevant to the text. The result is a valuable resource book which will enjoy the widest possible use.

The Theology of the Epistle to the Hebrews by George Milligan Pdf

Excerpt from The Theology of the Epistle to the Hebrews: With a Critical Introduction Tiie increasing interest that is being taken in the Epistle to the Hebrews, and the ever-deepening feeling of its vital relation to some of the most pressing questions of our own time, must be pleaded in justification of the addition of another to the many books that have recently appeared dealing with it. And at the same time the author ventures to express the hope that the present volume will be found to fill a place hitherto unoccupied at least by any English writer on the subject. For while there are Critical Commentaries on the Epistle in abundance, and Expositions, both scholarly and popular, dealing with its teaching as a whole, he is not aware of any other book in English presenting that teaching in systematic form. He is painfully conscious how far short his own attempt comes of what such a study in Biblical Theology ought to be; but he trusts that the different points of View suggested, and the questions raised, may at least direct the attention of others better qualified than himself to the same task. An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 by Samuel Davidson Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: Critical, Exegetical, and Theological Is as brief as possible, excluding extraneous matter in order to save space and economise the reader's time. Nothing which appeared necessary to completeness is intentionally omitted. If the author's views be not always approved, inquiry will at least be stimulated. They are not put forward lightly, but after anxious thought. Difficult questions, on which the evidence is conflicting, had to be treated, and slender probabilities required to be weighed. In these circumstances the author exercised his best judgment, reaching conclusions cautiously where acute scholars differ. Believing that his Opinions will be generally admitted sooner or later, he sends them forth to the world, requesting a candid consideration on the part of the reader. The Bible, however, is a difficult book, and mistakes in explaining it can scarcely be avoided; but impartial thinkers will judge these mistakes leniently.
