Excerpt from An Introduction to the Literature of the New Testament A book that is really old and really valuable has nothing to fear from the critic, whose labours can only put its worth in a clearer light, and establish its authority on a surer basis. In a word, it is the business of the critic to trace back the steps by which any ancient hoolt has been transmitted to us, to find where it came from and who wrote it, to examine the occasion of its composition, and search out every link that connects it with the history of the ancient world and with the personal life of its author. A Critical Introduction to the New Testament (Classic Reprint) by Arthur S. Peake Pdf

Excerpt from A Critical Introduction to the New Testament Man has no deeper or wider interest than theology; none deeper, for however much he may change, he never loses his love of the many questions it covers; and none wider, for under whatever law he may live he never escapes from its spacious shade; nor does he ever find that it speaks to him in vain or uses a voice that fails to reach him. Once the present writer was talking with a friend who has equal fame as a statesman and a man of letters, and he said, "Every day I live, Politics, which are affairs of Man and Time, interest me less, while Theology, which is an affair of God and Eternity, interests me more." As with him, so with many, though the many feel that their interest is in theology and not in dogma. Dogma, they know, is but a series of resolutions framed by a council or parliament, which they do not respect any the more because the parliament was composed of ecclesiastically-minded persons; while the theology which so interests them is a discourse touching God, though the Being so named is the God man conceived as not only related to himself and his world but also as rising ever higher with the notions of the self and the world. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. May the public be only as well pleased with the present as with past editions! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Popular Introduction to the New Testament (Classic Reprint) by J. Rawson Lumby Pdf

Excerpt from A Popular Introduction to the New Testament The New Testament. What is it? We now regard it as a single book. We speak of it in the singular number, and lose sight, by so doing, Of some most important facts in its history. The New Testament is not one book, but seven-and-twenty pieces, the work of eight or nine authors, writing, it is true, on the same subject-matter, but writing at different times, nearly always for different readers, for the most part under differing circumstances, and so from different points of View. And we need to bear this constantly in mind if the character of all its teaching is to be properly understood. It is worth while, then, to know how these several pieces were brought into one collection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Introduction to the Greek of the New Testament As very few in ected words occur in all their parts in the New Testament, different words have often been introduced into the same paradigm; therefore the student will probably find it best to memorize in order only the terminations. In the Appendix is a uniform paradigm of the regular verb, which will be found convenient for reference; also a tabular view of the endings of nouns. Introduction to the Old Testament by John Edgar McFadyen Pdf

Introduction to the Old Testament by John Edgar McFadyen Excerpt THE ORDER OF THE BOOKS In the English Bible the books of the Old Testament are arranged, not in the order in which they appear in the Hebrew Bible, but in that assigned to them by the Greek translation. In this translation the various books are grouped according to their contents-first the historical books, then the poetic, and lastly the prophetic. This order has its advantages, but it obscures many important facts of which the Hebrew order preserves a reminiscence. The Hebrew Bible has also three divisions, known respectively as the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

An Introduction to the Study of the Books of the New Testament (Classic Reprint) by John H. Kerr Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Books of the New Testament This book is the outgrowth of a series of sermons preached on the Gospels nine years ago in my first pastoral charge. These sermons were rewritten and published in the Presbyterian Journal of Philadelphia. Favorable notice having been accorded these articles, I was led to continue them by writing introductory articles to the other books of the New Testament for the same paper. The kind encouragement and advice of Professor Warfield, under whose able instruction in Allegheny Seminary I was permitted to study for four years, led me to think of rewriting the whole series with the view of publishing them in book form when completed. As my ministry progressed, I was also impressed with the need of having a popular treatise on New Testament Introduction for uses of instruction among the people of my charge. These things led me on in my work until it is now completed. To the wise council and timely criticisms of Dr. Warfield I am deeply indebted, for through the years that have elapsed since the inception of this work, he has repeatedly encouraged me. Excerpt from Introduction to the Old Testament It is obvious, therefore, that the discussions can in no case be exhaustive such treatment can only be expected in commentaries to the individual books. While carefully considering all the more important alternatives, I have usually contented myself with presenting the conclusion which seemed to me most probable; and I have thought it better to discuss each case on its merits, without referring expressly and continually to the Opinions of Eng lish and foreign scholars. In order to bring the discussion within the range of those who have no special linguistic equipment, I have hardly ever cited Greek or Hebrew words.
